Sit back and enjoy an outstanding documentary about the passion of mastering flight.
larput26 December 2005
It is a masterpiece! You can almost smell the Jet A at the edge of the runway. The lighting is some of the best you will see in a documentary ... period.

The boom and gyro aerial shots are absolutely breathtaking. When it was over I took out my log book and logged a half hour PIC.

It is a great movie to watch on low IFR days for all people who love aviation and those dedicated souls and loved ones that support us and understand our passion. This film speaks to us. Hopefully it will encourage others to take a trip to their local strip. When they get there, please, be ready to answer the questions this film stimulates.

inspiring, moving, insightful, and more
davenk817 February 2006
I just finished watching my copy of the above DVD for the third time, and it still brings me to tears numerous times during the show. It's just awesome, folks! The Score is inspiring, moving. And the photography is superb, incredible.

Brian Terwilliger's commentary was part of a 30 minute show on the Outdoor Channel last weekend, and I was shocked to see an apparently very young man talking - Mr. Terwilliger! I had imagined that Sidney Pollack (or some other high dollar Hollywood type) had put this very insightful, skillfully crafted movie together - Not So!! Amazing. Wonderful.

Also, thanks for taking a clear shot at "mayor" Daly and his brutal attack on Meigs Field. I had hoped to land there someday (I fly a '75 Piper Arrow), now it will not be. Daly's attack reminds me of the stuff we used to scoop out of the chicken house.

I'll be sharing this DVD around, and would like a dozen more copies for the same - people need to see and experience One Six Right.

Thanks again, N33867

A glorious tribute to General Aviation
hkfortner8 May 2007
Warning: Spoilers
One Six Right is a beautiful film that captures clearly the love of aviation. The types of aircraft, the pilots interviews, the beautiful musical score work together to show the viewer why people want to fly. The flying sequences are fantastic, the camera follows the aircraft with glorious clouds in the background and moves above the air craft to show golden Terra for ma below. I loved the guitar music, classical guitar with harmonic tones that were ethereal, and fit well the sense of flying. There are elements of this documentary that follow the standard form of interviews, history, demonstration, and cautioning the viewer to protect municipal air field from eradication in favor of urban sprawl. I am grateful to the filmmaker Terwilliger'interviewees for explaining the value of the Pilot Log Book. My brother and I are going over the log book our father left us with greater meaning for the two of us.

A High Definition Aviation Masterpiece
N765RV20 September 2005
I'm currently working on my private pilot's license and when I learned of "One Six Right" I was immediately captivated by its' message and the stories it told. Even though I live on the East Coast and have never visited our western states, I immediately knew that someway, somehow, I would see this film when it premiered. Several months later as I boarded my flight to California, I realized just how irrational I had become. Here I was, a normally logical pragmatic adult, traveling across the entire country, taking a week out of my life not to mention the expense, and for what? A movie? Yes, I must be insane. Well, hopefully not insane, just in love with flying. And, we all know the irrational things we can do in the name of love.

Looking forward to the film with such anticipation, I feared I had set myself up to be disappointed, but that was not to be the case. Everything was absolutely perfect from the amazing photography and music to the personal stories told throughout. Within minutes, tears were forming, then steadily streaming down my cheeks. I didn't care. All I could think, was that one day I'd set the wheels of my little Cessna down on Van Nuys' runway 16R and what a glorious day it would be.

If you have the opportunity to see "One Six Right" on the big screen, don't think twice, just go !

An amazing experience!
N4037G11 September 2005
This film is an amazing experience for pilots and non pilots alike.

Having learned to fly at Van Nuys, the film has a particularly special meaning to me. However, you don't need to be a pilot to enjoy the film. The cinematography, visual effects and music are incredible.

One Six Right commemorates the 75th anniversary of the Van Nuys Airport. The film includes a restored collection of historical still and movie images from the Airport and over the San Fernando Valley. These images are integrated into this high definition film in a way that I can only describe as magic.

The film also focuses on the modern day struggle of the General Aviation Airport to survive within an urban environment and amidst a challenging economy. Highlighting this point, One Six Right contains an emotional sequence of Mayor Richard Daley's intentional destruction of Chicago's Meigs Field that will bring tears to the eyes of anyone whose life was ever touched by aviation.

The entire experience captures the modern and historical aspects of aviation, as well as the significant role aviation has played in the growth of Southern California's economy.

This is a beautifully done film that I'm sure I will see again and again.

Moving, even if you aren't a pilot...
lmmercer20 September 2005
What did I expect when an airplane fanatic friend talked me into driving from my home just south of San Francisco all the way to Los Angeles just to see a documentary about airplanes? I don't fly and am not very interested in airplanes. I had surely lost my mind and wasn't expecting to enjoy myself.

From the first measure of the opening theme to the last credit on the list of credits, I was enraptured. I was moved to laugh and cry. I sat immobile, engrossed in the stories, the feelings, the mood of the piece. "One Six Right" made me want to fly. I didn't want it to end and would have remained immobile had the projectionist started the film over again right there. I walked into the theater, but I floated out.

Would I drive down to Los Angeles again to see "One Six Right" again? I would. I would encourage others to do so as well.

Beautifully Done
platinumsidewinder10 November 2005
This is not a movie about airplanes. This is not a movie about pilots. This is a movie about passion. Yes airplanes are the main subject along with Van Nuys airport, but its about the awe that flying can give a person.

This is beautifully done. Beautiful cinematography, amazing sights and sounds and a score that will transport you to a different place as you watch. Just the music itself is enough to make you cry. Not sad tears, but tears of joy, of how truly wonderful what your watching is. There were times during the movie when I was welling up with how graceful and alluring that the passion of flying is.

When a movie gives you emotion, especially genuine delightfulness, from watching it, then you know this is something great.

If there is one movie in this world that is magical.......this is it.

It's Great !!!
imjamie-17 December 2005
To start this review I will simply say that this film is truly awesome and inspiring. It's not so much about the airport, the pilots or the planes, but more about the passion and freedom of flying. The thing that gets in a lot of people when they're young and never lets go. The itch to want to be in the sky, but always knowing where home is when it's time to come back down. The story is also about the "little" airports that are in a lot of neighborhoods across America, but which are fading fast. People don't care for them because of the noise and all, but they serve a purpose and for a lot of people, maybe seeing this film will make them understand that purpose a little more. The musical score is terrific, especially the main theme. Guitarist Freddy Clarke provides some excellent music and his playing is terrific. If you get a chance to see this film I think that you'll truly enjoy it, more so if you have a passion for aviation past and present.

Interested in aviation? You will love this movie!
brian-j-17 March 2006
The movie claims to be a documentary of the Van Nuys airport, but it is a lot more than that. An addition to an exceptional review of the history of the Van Nuys airport, the movie describes what happens at all "small" airports and really communicates the love of flying pilots feel. If you have ever wondered why people fly, or wondered what happens at the "little" airport near your house, this movie will show you exactly what goes on and why pilots love to fly. As a private pilot, in this movie I found a way to express my love of flying. And after watching the movie my wife, who thinks of aircraft as nothing more than a mode of transportation, finally understood what aviation is all about. If you have any interest in aviation, you will not be disappointed by this movie.

Best documentary about the romance of flying in years, that shows the passion and tells the history of the men and women involved in general aviation.
wbogaardt14 December 2005
This documentary was is a love story. The love story between people, their flying machines and the local airport, affectionately called Van Nuys. The aerial photography is some of the best seen by this reviewer in a while. The film has three stories. The first is the plight of airports and their destruction by politicians and people with little knowledge about the commerce and benefits that airports bring to a community. The other is the history of Van Nuys airport itself, and the people who put Van Nuys on the record books and into the annuls of Hollywood history. Finally, the story of how the love of aviation is so ingrained into the old and young pilots.

The orchestration is very well done and brings heart to the film. It keys well with each of the scenes. The transitions were well thought out and flow together, not just your standard fades and transitions you see in a regular documentary.

The DVD has extras aerial shots, and a few easter eggs which are being released over time. Since the film was done in digital everything is very clear, and it helps to have a high end system or have seen it in a digital theater. The only thing missing was a play all for the special feature clips.

This documentary wasn't made for only people who love aviation. It's truly a film that captures an innate human trait of a passion and a love of a dream.

Not great
jland11 February 2011
There is a documentary out there about the romance and thrill of flying, but this one isn't it.

I give it three points for the cinematography. The steady-cam from the camera's airplane was outstanding as it captured the other planes in flight.

But really, it's just an infomercial for Van Nuys Airport. Think about it. You're paying money and taking your time to watch a long infomercial. Van Nuys = suburb of Los Angeles. Do you really care?

I'm much more interested in the romance and thrill of flying, and much less interested in Van Nuys Airport.

Documentary style - excellent air-to-air cinematography
andy-robinson-16 December 2005
This is a documentary style film - however, the story flows and the air-to-air cinematography is excellent.

The bonus chapters on the DVD have some of the best air-to-air footage. The Pitts special work out is amazing. All of the aerial work is a testament to the pilotage and formation flying of the pilots as well as good direction.

I think that the orchestrated music is used slightly too much - I prefer the guitar pluckings of Freddy Clarke.

In summary this is an excellent summary of Van Nuys and also a good insight in to General Aviation in the US.

I think that to do full justice - one needs to watch this movie on a large screen with a good surround sound system. My TV/stereo did not do it full courtesy.

I concur with other comments - if you get to see this in a cinema, do it! Enjoy - hopefully there will be other such great movies from this team.

The passion of flying
nostep21 March 2006
I concur with other viewers who rightly point out how well the passion of flying comes through in this documentary. The music score was fantastic and helped to accentuate the passion. I find it interesting how people who live near airports get angry about the "noise" around airports and I don't see much happening with those who add sub woofers to their cars and drive through neighbourhoods with the windows down (like it matters that the window is down or not). It is a sad day when a GA airport is trashed. Meigs field is another casualty and I hadn't seen the pictures of that butcher job before. This documentary was terrifically filmed and will appeal to young and old, pilot or non-pilot and I am honoured to add it to my library. I hope the makers will continue to bring such examples of filming quality to DVD. For me, anything aviation is usually a sure hit, but this presentation exceeded my wildest expectations.

The One-Six-Right DVD is Magnificent !
ken-d-114 March 2006
Have received my copy of the International Release DVD - There's only one word to describe it - Magnificent !

It's a long way from Australia to California, and I personally have never flown at or into Van Nuys. Nevertheless, the history as related brings back fond memories of my own active flying days. For this 63 year old, they were many many moons ago now.

I especially appreciate that DC3 landing without anything more than a three inch bounce. When Melbourne's International Airport had been open but a few weeks, I landed in such a way (probably about three feet, and several of them) as to earn a commendation from tower for not bursting a tire. An ATC would be hauled over the coals for such a comment today.

I appreciate I'm just one of I assume to be many overseas recipients, but would you please pass on my thanks and congratulations to all concerned.

Cheers - Ken Dowell Melbourne, Australia

Just not enough space to fully praise this great film.
avlite13 March 2006
What a trip down memory lane. Having grown up in the shadow of VNY, this was like a reunion with people and airplanes that helped to shape my life and career. So full of triumphs as well as tragedy's. Aviation gave us dreams to hold onto and paths to follow to a lifestyle so rich in adventure and excitement. So many dreamers with the passion to attempt the seemingly impossible only to succeed as well as fail. But the failures only seem to give purpose to another to continue to try. A day without going to the airport was not much of a day. Still isn't. But I'm the luckiest guy on earth. I've been able to do it nearly every day of my life since the age of 14. Thanks Brian for the memories. Thanks for putting the magic of flight up for all the world to see. If ONE airport is saved from the developers because someone saw this film and began to understand their importance to our world, then it was worth every cent and then some. Great job.

Show us a whole aerobatic routine from the air..please...WITH the drums !!! That was GREAT !!! ( former High School Band Drummer here)

A love story
fornarniaandforaslan4 March 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Only a few words can describe this film. Breathtaking! Moving! Emotional! Excellent cinematography! I am a student pilot working on my Private Pilot's license at Van Nuys Airport (VNY). This film is a gem. From its beautiful soundtrack to each aerial shot to the stories--o the stories! It was amazing that an airplane movie could get me all choked up.

I saw this movie right after my first check ride and before my first solo and I must agree with one of the pilots interviewed, "This is a love story..." Wow. This movie was like that "aha moment" when you realize she's all you've ever dreamed of. I'm in love...with flying!

One Six Right a masterpiece
smichaud-11 February 2006
I've been anxiously waiting for that movie and when I received the complete package. I was surprise with the quality of the entire thing. Poster is superb, CD music is great and the movie...what a movie. Being myself involve into my regional airport, I found the story very similar to our's except that Van Nuy expand and we didn't. With all the history and informations in that movie, we found that General Aviation is in danger for it's airport.

I've already looked at the movie twice. This would be a perfect movie to be shown in all movie theater around the nation, even here in Montreal, Canada.

Perfect MAsterpiece, Quality images and music that's a pleasure to hear and fly.

Keep them flying, Sylvain Montreal, Quebec, Canada

The Definitive Aviation Experience
kcomalley15 February 2006
I've been a pilot for over 20 years. It's impossible to count the number of times that I've been asked by non-pilots to describe my feelings about aviation. You see, words alone can never capture the experience. I no longer need worry about answering that question. ONE SIX RIGHT is the definitive aviation experience regardless of whether you've flown for 20 years or 2 days. This brilliant intelligent film explains why we fly and why we want to fly as long as we live. Only a pilot could understand the aviation experience. However, very few pilots could memorialize our love of flying in a film for the ages. I'm very pleased to know that whenever anybody asks me why I fly I can always hand them the DVD and tell them "watch this - you'll understand!" The photography and soundtrack are stunning. Thank you - I never thought that anybody could capture the joy, the fears, the challenge and yes, the love of flying that we all cherish.

A True Masterpiece
dgraves-101 February 2006
When I received my DVD in the mail today I couldn't wait to watch it. Moments later I found myself glued to the television with tears slowly coming from my eyes. Someone has finally been able to show the passion and feelings that come with flying. This movie doesn't smother the audience with statistics, plane models and useless aviation material to fill the time slot... It lets the audience feel what's involved with being a pilot and what happens at an airport. After you watch this movie you will actually feel like you've been to Van Nuys airport even if you never have. It's a great movie for the entire family. Hopefully people who have not yet enjoyed the feeling of flight will want to do so after watching this movie. The camera work, editing, and especially the soundtrack and background music is incredible. As with any hobby or sport it's hard to understand the enjoyment or passion of that sport without being involved. This movie does that for the viewer. It lets the viewer "feel" some of the passion with never leaving the ground, and will make those viewers want to go flying. If you only see one movie this year make it ONE SIX RIGHT. There is one major star in this movie....and that's FLYING. I could never express how this movie has touched me. Now if you'll excuse me....I'm going flying!!

The joy of aviation has never been captured on film like this before.
jgraham-1827 July 2006
One Six Right unleashed my sense of wonder to the joys of general aviation. I was so inspired by the film that I have since obtained my private pilot license, purchased a 1940 Piper Cub and spent several days at AirVenture in a true sense of awe that all of aviation has to offer. From the film's introduction until the moving finale, I was captivated by the brilliant photography, truly moving musical score and raw emotion that aviation has brought to so many lives. The historical perspective the film provides on general aviation is unparalleled in cinema while the in-flight photography exudes a genuineness that is often lacking in modern film. I don't know how you could watch this movie and not want to immediately experience the awesomeness of flight. One Six Right has truly changed my life for the better! It is one of the greatest love stories ever told.

Our Flying Heritage...Pass It On!
embmary27 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I've been involved in aviation in one way or another (UAL stewardess, flight instructor (GUM, OAK, OKC), charter pilot, FAA inspector) for over 40 years. I've had the pleasure of being able to airport bum at VNY in the early 70's and remember walking around Super Snoopy in awe and respect. I've been "flying a desk" for too long now and this movie struck such an emotional chord with me...it reminded me why I got started in aviation in the first place and why I took the $5 bill in my pocket (all the money I had at the time) and spent it on my intro flight lesson at the Stockton Airport. And what a Ride I've experienced since then! Thanks, Brian, for your astute insight into a very special world that I've been honored to be a part of all these years.

Fantastic Movie
flyninstructor27 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Being an active pilot and flight instructor,It so reminded me of how and why I do what I do today.I was 5 when I decided I wanted to fly. While this is my second career, still my first love.

It also showed the daily struggles that an airport must go through to stay alive and fight against those uninformed trying to close them down. The aerial footage is very well done, and while this was just about one airport it can be applied to most general aviation airports across the country. The musical score was fantastic and fit very well!

Whether you are a pilot or not, have all your friends and family see the movie.

Brilliant, Passionate, Spectacular Movie
doug-hill26 October 2006
I am the father of a 15 year old aviator, who like one of those interviewed in the movie, looked heavenward in wonder at the age of two and has only wanted to fly, fly, and fly some more since an early age. I loved his passion and excitement for something I loved seeing him do, but, until I saw this movie, never fully understood that true love he exudes for flying. This brilliantly constructed, beautifully scored movie took my heart to the same place where his heart is. I was as emotionally touched and at times completely overwhelmed by the simple message of unabated passion that is 16Right. This is much more than a movie about aviation or aviators. No, this is a movie of a love affair that never ends, in fact, this love affair's intensity grows more fervent as each day passes.

Brian Terwilliger Gets It Right
piperLJ14 August 2007
After 25 years of marriage and complaining why my husband had to go to the hanger and see his "Cub" all the time, one man made me understand my husband. That man is Brian J. Terwilliger. After driving our motor home to the Annual West Coast Piper Cub Fly in (yep family vacation involving the Cub) I saw bits of the movie and my 19 year son ordered it on our return. I have to say I was so touched by the essence of how Brian captured flying. It is amazing that a young man, age 32, on his first film could teach me a lesson on the "love of aviation" to the lay person. This is not a story about an airport as I thought, it is a love story about humans and science. When my five year old son has seen the movie six times this week, I finally sat down with the family and have now seen One Six Right and the companion disc, oh and the soundtrack is now in my car. Thank you Brian for showing those that "tolerate" flying by a spouse, that it is a love affair that they don't have to be jealous of. I might even take flying lessons after 25 years of marriage because of you. Our Piper L4J Cub has been in the family since 1976 and is now a welcome member because of this film.

Thanks Brian and everyone involved in this movie.

Cindy Sorely, Layton, Utah
