Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott is a pioneer in her field, a confirmed key player in the music industry. You can label her a producer, a writer, a vocalist, an original female MC, an avant-garde artist. Whether its rap, hip hop or soulful R&B, Elliott continues to dominate the charts, stun the critics and remains the true leader of the pack among her contemporaries.
The DVD release "Hits of Miss E... The Videos, Volume 1" is quite a nice package. However, it comes as a surprise that there aren't more than four music videos. Featuring the full length clips for "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)", "Hit Em Wit Da Hee", "She's A B**ch" and "Get Ur Freak On", this compilation leaves you wanting more. Thankfully, there are two 'Behind The Scenes' featurettes. One is on the making of "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)" and the other deals with "She's A B**ch".
As if her tracks weren't catchy enough, the music videos themselves are also stunning. Always ahead of her time, Elliott is known for innovative and original clips. Tightly directed by the likes of Hype Williams, Paul Hunter and Dave Meyers, the videos here are solid examples of Missy's capabilities. But from the day "Get Ur Freak On" graced MTV, she sky rocketed into a bizarre visual world where nothing has been off limits. If you find this DVD even mildly interesting, be sure to check out "One Minute Man", "Work It", "Pass That Dutch" and "Lose Control".
With a back catalog of chart topping singles, its puzzling as to why there aren't more clips included here. Though the production is labeled "Volume 1" it has been nearly 5 years, and to date, no word on the next volume's release date. Elliott deserves a more complete archive- with a career spanning almost 10 years, there is plenty of material for a fully loaded DVD.
This review is, of course, biased due to the fact that I love Missy. I mean any comment on a musical artist's DVD release is subjective, depending on if you like them or not. You probably wouldn't be watching it in the first place no matter what a critic has said, if you're not a fan. If you've never listened to one of her albums or watched one of her groundbreaking videos, you really don't know what you're missing.
