Storyline

Champions is a comedy about three dysfunctional young men who, seeking to instill some harmony into their lives, leave town to spend a weekend in the countryside with an eccentric relative. Ostensibly they are there to lend a hand with a mysterious "project" that the uncle has been carefully planning. However as the men spend more time with each other and in the strange surroundings of the countryside, tensions build between them and the bucolic weekend starts to get strange. First impressions of what they are actually there to do and what the local personalities are up to begin to change and tensions rises between the guys. A girl enters the picture as does a wayward cop, making for emotional trepidation for all involved. After a climactic showdown each goes his separate way to be faced with yet more rustic confusion and skewed self-discovery. The men leave the countryside chastened -- but wiser than when they arrived. Written by Anonymous

three men's special-ed edition of "Walden"
11 July 2006 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

I saw this movie at a screening in Tribeca, and a good deal of cast and crew were there, including Director/writer and actor David Wike, Kevin Corrigan, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.

The movie is split into two parts, first the chaotic and disappointing lives of the men in New York (one being left for another man, another getting fired from a job, and Russel having no real future), and then shifts to the chaotic but rewarding lives of the men in PA working for Russel(Wike)'s mysterious veteran Uncle Doug (Berkeley).

I would definitely recommend this movie for anyone who roots for the underdog even when the outcome is inevitably hopeless.

Corrigan is great at roles like this, dead-pan delivery of comic lines and great facial reactions: we know exactly what he's thinking. Also, Ebon Moss-Bachrach definitely steals the show as Stan, a 25-year old failed mathematician, vegetarian, and wimp.

Clea DuVall also has a good small role as a farmer's daughter who see's beyond Corrigan's lack of enthusiasm for life.

"Champions" is a great movie that could definitely develop a cult following if not released in major theaters.
