Storyline

Based on a true story. In 1957 a rag-tag, shoeless, poor group of kids from Monterrey, Mexico shocked the world by winning 13 games in a row and the Little League World Series in the only perfect game ever pitched in the Championship. These kids, led by their priest and a down-and-out former major leaguer embark on a journey through the southern US and up into Williamsport, PA for the Championship game. They encountered many adversities including nearly being deported and the bigotry that wouldn't allow them into certain restaurants or travel on certain buses. They never lost their faith and eventually captured the hearts of both nations. This is a heart-warming inspirational story in the tradition of "Rudy", "Hoosiers", "Coach Carter" or "Friday Night Lights". Written by John Bradly

Trivia

While the Biloxi pitcher warms up before the tenth game, Cool Papa Bell, who is marking the base lines, tries to tell him that he is telegraphing his pitches by the manner in which he is handling the ball behind his back as he leans forward before each pitch. He says (at around 1h 4 mins) "You got a tail" which the captions show as "You got a tell". The pitcher responds "Tell who what?" To which Cool Papa Bell says "A tail (captions again show 'tell'), you're giving your pitches away", whereupon the Biloxi coach tells the black man to "mind your own business". Looking in W. William Winokur's book "The Perfect Game" to resolve the tail/tell issue reveals that the character of Cool Papa Bell and the incident of the Biloxi pitcher telegraphing his pitches are not in the book. "Tell" is slang in poker for a player's actions unconsciously telegraphing his intent, but it is not commonly used in baseball and neither is "tail" in that sense. Viewers will have to decide for themselves whether the Biloxi pitcher misheard "tell" for "tail" or whether he heard correctly but doesn't play poker. See more »

Inspiration for young baseball players!
15 July 2012 | by (LangleyCanada) – See all my reviews

I loved the movie and actually was around when this all took place. Who cares if they embellished some things and left out others the story was told to show young people if they work hard at something that is important to them, they can reach their goals, become successful and feel proud of their achievements.

This movie also showed the discrimination that took place in certain areas during this time period and how the players overcame the challenges this put upon them.

This was a life lesson that all our young people could learn from. Both my grandchildren play baseball and they loved this movie. Their parents and grandparents watched it with them and got as much enjoyment out of the movie as they did.
