Storyline

Based on a true story. In 1957 a rag-tag, shoeless, poor group of kids from Monterrey, Mexico shocked the world by winning 13 games in a row and the Little League World Series in the only perfect game ever pitched in the Championship. These kids, led by their priest and a down-and-out former major leaguer embark on a journey through the southern US and up into Williamsport, PA for the Championship game. They encountered many adversities including nearly being deported and the bigotry that wouldn't allow them into certain restaurants or travel on certain buses. They never lost their faith and eventually captured the hearts of both nations. This is a heart-warming inspirational story in the tradition of "Rudy", "Hoosiers", "Coach Carter" or "Friday Night Lights". Written by John Bradly

Trivia

In the DVD commentary, William Dear mentions (at 06:45) "some of this footage is from a Mexico unit that had shot prior to our shooting and that's a whole other story about the struggle this movie had." At 11:53 in the commentary Dear adds "There was a unit that shot, prior to our shooting, in Mexico. I tried to use as much footage as I could from their shoot, but we had a lot of casting changes once that little shoot had folded." At 26:55 Dear mentions they had lost the boy originally cast as the catcher, Norberto, and were so close to shooting they could only use a boy who could already play baseball, when they found Ryan Ochoa who had the right look, acting ability, and could hit, pitch, and catch baseball despite being more than a year younger than the other principal boys. Fantastic underdog feel good movie
8 May 2010 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

If you liked movies like The Blind Side, Hoosiers or League of Their Own then you will like this movie. Quick description, this movie is a based on the true story of a little league baseball team from Monterey Mexico that came to the USA to play in the little league tournament. The movie is set in 1957 when prejudice was healthy in America. I am pleased to say that they did not overdo the part of the struggle. These boys were underdogs in every sense of the definition; they were poor, smaller and foreign. This is a powerful beautiful movie of the power of children's love for the game and their desire to overcome obstacles. I do not want to give too much of the story away, but I will touch on a few points. The movies color, lighting and sets are very well done for a very low budget film, which is not easy to recreate 1957 Mexico and America. I really liked the actors and their roles, Cheech Marin put a nice zip in being a priest and Clifton Collins is a great little known actor as the coach. There were a lot of great actors in smaller parts David Koechner, Frances Fisher, Emilie DeRavin, John Cothran, Tracy Walter and it was really nice to see Louis Gossett Jr again. I was a little disappointed that the child actors were not Mexican decent, mainly because the accents were way off. Other than that there were only minimal complaints of over acting, clichés and tempo, that did NOT rob from the spirit of the movie. Fantastic movie, that is more than a movie, for anyone who has ever been an underdog.
