Box office dips in 2011: A year-end analysis

30 December 2011 10:02 AM, PST | EW - Inside Movies | See recent EW.com - Inside Movies news »

Box office junkies, unite! It’s time to break down the year that was at the movies using the thing that we love most — the numbers!

Blockbuster franchise films reigned supreme at the North American box office in 2011. Of the ten highest grossing movies, the top seven — led by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 with $381 million — are sequels, Rise of the Planet of the Apes (No. 9, $176.7 million) is a prequel, and Thor (No. 8, $181 million) and Captain America: The First Avenger (No. 10, $176.7 million), while not sequels, are part of the larger Avengers franchise which Marvel will roll out next year. »

Stallone! Statham! Willis! Schwarzenegger! Van Damme! Norris! Yes, it's The Expendables 2 trailer!

16 December 2011 6:52 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

It's really shaping up to be a pretty great week for movie trailers, what with the arrival of the first look at Men in Black III and G.I. Joe: Retribution a few days back and new trailers for The Dark Knight Rises and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey expected to hit tomorrow. But, as we wait with baited breath for a glimpse at Christopher Nolan's final Batman movie, Sylvester Stallone and company have slipped under the radar with the release of the first teaser for next year's action ensemble The Expendables 2.

A sequel to 2010's The Expendables (obviously), EX2 sees Stallone vacate the director's chair in favour of Simon West (Con Air, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, The Mechanic), with the aging action star returning to the cast as Barney Ross alongside Jason Statham (Lee Christmas), Jet Li (Yin Yang), Dolph Lundgren (Gunnar Jensen), Randy Couture (Toll Road »

Impressive First Official Poster for 'The Expendables 2' Finally Lands

16 December 2011 2:02 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Ever since that fake pile-up-of-actors poster debuted a few months ago, I've been anxious to see what the actual poster for The Expendables 2 would look like. Ain't It Cool News has debuted, officially, the first official poster for Simon West's Expendables 2. There's only one actor on it, Sylvester Stallone of course, but I love the look and concept. It's a hole blown in the wall in front of him as a giant number 2, with some orange flame tinges. For all that we've seen in the meantime, this is honestly an impressive official debut, bravo Lionsgate, some great work here to follow-up that otherwise measly first trailer. Check it out below! Here's the new Expendables 2 poster. To grab the high res version, head to AICN. I'm sure we'll see more. Millennium Films / Nu Image now has Simon West (Con Air, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, The Mechanic) set to »

First Trailer and Official Synopsis for The Expendables 2, Plus New Promo Poster

14 December 2011 4:27 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Lionsgate has released the first trailer for The Expendables 2, directed by Simon West (The Mechanic).  It's a teaser that doesn't get into plot, or even showcase any major action.  At this early stage, with over 9 months to go until the August 17 release, the film is selling itself entirely on the reputation of the cast: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Chuck Norris, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Liam Hemsworth, Jean Claude Van Damme, Bruce Willis, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. If you are interested in the plot, the studio also unveiled the first official synopsis for The Expendables 2 along with a new promo poster.  See it all after the jump. Click to Apple for HD. I have to admit, I got excited when "Norris" flashed across the screen, followed by a cut to Norris whipping off his glasses.  And I didn't even see the first one!  Internet, what can »

Denzel Washington to Replace Russell Crowe in The Equalizer?

14 December 2011 12:41 PM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Last year we reported that a movie based on the '80s TV series The Equalizer was picking up steam and had gained Russell Crowe as a potential star. He was attached to play Robert McCall, a former spy who offers his services to everyday people, free of charge, in order to help them find justice. With a premise somewhat similar to The A-Team, it was starting to look like the movie might have been put on hold due to the disappointing box office numbers for The A-Team movie. As it turns out, the project is still in development but Russell Crowe is no longer involved. Instead, he has been replaced by his American Gangster co-star Denzel Washington. The update comes courtesy of Coming Soon, who got a hold of a press release from Sony Pictures announcing the extension of their deal with Escape Artists. The Equalizer is listed as »

Denzel Washington Is "The Equalizer"

14 December 2011 9:21 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Denzel Washington is attached to star in the film version of the classic 1980's TV series "The Equalizer" in development at Sony Pictures Entertainment and Escape Artists says Variety.

Edward Woodward starred in the classic CBS television series about Robert McCall, a former operative of a covert intelligence organisation who seeks redemption for his dark past via offering his services to those being persecuted and in need of help.

Combining his skills both investigative and deadly, McCall brings justice to various hoodlums, killers, dealers, rapists and other scum on the streets of New York City. He also performed assignments for the head of his former organisation and dealt with his estranged son.

The show was noted for its memorable theme tune, McCall's signature Jaguar XJ6 car, and its realistic handling of the spy world with sometimes brutal violence and a lack of fancy gadgets.

Denzel Washington To Lead Adaptation Of The Equalizer

14 December 2011 7:00 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

I have to admit, my knowledge of ’80s TV series isn’t that great, but when you put Denzel Washington into the mix for an adaptation of one of them, you instantly start to get interested.

Variety are reporting that Sony Pictures Entertainment are partnering with Escape Artists to develop an adaptation of The Equalizer, a show which ran back in 1985-89, with Washington attached to star.

The film is to be scripted by Richard Wenk, whose credits include the actioners 16 Blocks, led by Bruce Willis, and the recent The Mechanic remake, led by Jason Statham and Ben Foster, along with the upcoming The Expendables 2, so clearly he’s got a penchant for writing action films.

The Equalizer,

Denzel Washington Wanted For Film Remake Of 80′s Series The Equalizer?

14 December 2011 1:07 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Is Denzel Washington about to replace his American Gangster co-star Russell Crowe in The Equalizer, Sony’s attempts to bring the 1980s avenging CBS series to the big screen?

Sony have pushed the proposed remake to their production shingle Escape Artists, who made The Taking of Pelham 123 remake, and just like that movie they once again have Washington “in mind” to star. The part does call for a middle-aged but sympathetic vigilante and this is definitely the sort of movie that Washington likes to be attracted to and come to think of it if he can gauge the interest of Tony Scott, this would be yet another entry in their older leading man action movies (Man on Fire, Deja Vu, Pelham 123, Unstoppable, etc).

The Equalizer was an American t.v. series that ran for four years in the late 80’s and each episode followed former secret agent Robert McCall »

Denzel Washington Now Attached as 'The Equalizer' in Sony's Movie

13 December 2011 4:40 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Some great casting news out of nowhere. In the latest Sony Pictures announcement (via ComingSoon) that they are extending its first look deal with production company Escape Artists, it was mentioned that one of the projects they are currently working on is The Equalizer, an adaptation of the 80's TV series. We've heard of the project before, as it had Paul Haggis writing at one point. But the report now mentions that Denzel Washington is attached to star with Richard Wenk (16 Blocks, The Mechanic, Expendables 2) on the script, and Variety has backed it up with confirmed casting that he's attached. Denzel is The Equalizer! The Equalizer was a CBS show from the 80's that followed Robert McCall, an agent with a mysterious past who once worked for a top-secret agency where he did some pretty horrible things. The gritty and violent series follows his exploits as he decides to »

Escapism, invasion, sequels and resentment: the cinema trends of 2011

13 December 2011 7:47 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

What do this year’s most successful Hollywood films say about our changing tastes, and how do they compare to previous years? Ryan finds out…

At first glance, a look at this year’s ten highest grossing movies reveals nothing more than the usual diet of sequels and effects-filled blockbusters. The final Harry Potter movie made more than $1.3bn. Transformers: Dark Of The Moon and Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides made more than $1bn, in spite of middling reviews. The rest of the year’s hits were largely dominated by computer-animated movies for the family crowd: Kung Fu Panda 2, The Smurfs, Cars 2 and Rio all made the top ten.

Look a little more closely, though, and you’ll see that this year’s hit films reveal numerous common themes, and tell us a great deal about movie-going appetites and contemporary fears…
