But before the movie... the tour! It starts in just under three weeks in Denver. I'm not getting paid for this but I'm going to shill because live theater needs to be promoted. It's so much cooler than TV ... even if Corporate America can't profit off of it as much (finite audience = number of seats in house) and thus makes it seem uncool by ignoring it or dismissing it as irrelevant.
Oscar winner Estelle Parsons, 81, headlines the August tour
And given that The Movie -- all caps because if it's any good it'll be Big -- is going to be the subject of much discussion whenever it begins to film and especially once it's in theaters, you'll want to be in the know early on. Even if you're not normally a theater person. If you haven't been following theatrical buzz and awardage these past couple of years, it's

Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins, who both had roles in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, have signed on to star in John Carter of Mars, the adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs book series that Andrew Stanton is directing for Disney. Carter centers on a civil war veteran who finds himself mysteriously transported to Mars, where his involvement with warring races of the dying planet force him to rediscover his humanity. Kitsch will play the title character, while Collins is playing Dejah Thoris, heir to the throne of Mars' Helium kingdom. The movie marks the first live-action feature for Stanton – whose previous directing credits include Wall-e, Finding Nemo and A Bug’s Life. Disney hopes the big-budget production will launch a franchise on the scale of Pirates of the Caribbean. Stanton wrote the screenplay with Mark Andrews. The role of Carter was considered one of the "gets" for a young actor, and

Recent Oscar nominee Michael Shannon is in negotiations to star in The Runaways, the movie about Joan Jett's seminal 1970s rock band. Kirsten Stewart will be playing Jett and Dakota Fanning will play bandmate Cherie Curry. There's no word about what role it is Shannon will be playing, but its a safe bet that it's someone with a serious mental imbalance. That guy looks insane. Revolutionary Road was his break out role, but he was pretty damn good in Bug before that. Michael Shannon scares me...

The extremely talented Michael Shannon, who earned an Oscar nomination for his performance in Sam Mendes’ Revolutionary Road, is in talks to play one of the lead male roles in The Runaways, the upcoming biopic on Joan Jett's seminal 1970s rock band. Shannon would join Kristen Stewart, who is set to star as Jett, and Dakota Fanning, who is on board to play bandmate Cherie Curry. The film will revisit the short but influential life of the first all-female band of the rock era. Although the film centers on the four female members of the band, there are a number of key male roles representing people who were personally and professionally associated with band members. The trades say Shannon is also mulling several other offers, and timing details still need to be worked out on Runaways. Shannon’s previous credits include Tigerland, Vanilla Sky, 8 Mile, Bug, World Trade Center

At the Museum of Contemporary Art/American Cinematheque benefit screening of Parasomnia (see item here), Fango got a chance to quickly chat to some of the assembled filmmakers about their upcoming projects. First up, Wes Craven took a moment to discuss the title of his latest feature, Rogue Pictures’ 25/8.
“It’s based on a phrase in the movie, saying that if you fight the devil 24/7, it’s not enough—you have to fight 25/8,” Craven tells us. “The phrase was in the film, in the dialogue. The original title of the movie was Bug, which is the name of the central character [played by Max Thieriot, pictured]. I was about halfway through writing the script when somebody said, ‘I just read that William Friedkin has a film coming out called Bug.’ So that was that for that title. It’s very punchy and intriguing, but that’s the way the cookie crumbles.”

Fango spoke to Udo Kier the other day for our 30th-anniversary issue (#284, on sale in May), and got a couple of extra tidbits about his latest genre project, My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done. The film, which we last reported on here, brings together the unique filmmaking talents of Werner Herzog and David Lynch (the latter serving as executive producer), along with an equally eclectic cast including Kier, his Shadow Of The Vampire co-star Willem Dafoe, Bug’s Michael Shannon, genre fave Brad Dourif, Sisters’ Chloe Sevigny and Twin Peaks’ Grace Zabriskie.
“The film is based on a true story from 1979,” Kier tells us, “and is about a young actor played by Michael Shannon, with Chloe Sevigny as his girlfriend. They’re both actors, and I’m Mario, their teacher. We’re doing a Greek play by Sophocles that’s very intense, and [Shannon’s character] goes home at one point

A ravaged face, an evil John Malkovich and the wiles and curves of Megan Fox aren't the only things Josh Brolin will be contending with in Jonah Hex. I must say that the big screen adaptation of DC Comics' Jonah Hex series is definitely shaping up quite nicely! Well, at least in terms of the cast involved.
THR reported today that funny dude Will Arnett ("Arrested Development", Blades of Glory) and the recently Oscar-nominated Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road, Bug) have both joined the Hex cast, which already boasts an impressive line-up with John Malkovich, Josh Brolin, and uber-hottie Megan Fox.
Arnett is set to play the Union soldier that recruits Hex (Brolin), and Shannon will be taking on the role of Doc Cross Williams, a seriously deranged circus leader that heads up a gladiator-style event.
This will mark Arnett’s first leap from comedy into horror films. Shannon definitely made his mark in the horror genre through his brutally paranoid performance in Bug.
We’ll make sure to keep you updated as more Jonah Hex news rolls in!

If you weren't already excited for Warner Bros. horror western Jonah Hex, the latest casting should be enough to send any fan of "Arrested Development" overboard. The Hollywood Reporter announced today that both Will Arnett ("Arrested Development", Monsters vs. Aliens) and Michael Shannon (Bug, Dead BIRDSs) will join Josh Brolin, John Malkovich and Megan Fox in the adaptation of the DC comic book. Jimmy Hayward is directing "Hex," whose cast also includes Josh Brolin, John Malkovich and Megan Fox. It's the story of Hex (Brolin), a scarred bounty hunter tracking a voodoo practitioner (Malkovich) who wants to raise an army of the undead to liberate the South. Arnett will play a Union soldier who enlists Hex and is blindsided by the dirty fighting style of his enemies. The role is not inherently comic. Shannon plays Doc Cross Williams, the bizarre ringleader of a brutal gladiator circus event.

It’s time once again for horror at the Oscars. Sunday’s festivities were filled with folks who have worked in the genre and per usual, I feel if it’s a win for Danny Boyle, it is a win for rage-zombie fans everywhere. Seems like a lot of folks this year are veterans of Exorcist: The Beginning, Amityville: A New Generation and Gremlins 2: The New Batch. Of course, the most important genre win would be Greg Cannom, a staple of 80’s horror effects; he worked on such films as Fright Night Part 2, The Lost Boys and The Howling.
Now some movies on this list might be “kinda horror.” These thrillers or genre-friendly frameworks are on the ghoulish cusp and are marked with an asterisk. Some flicks on the list are there because, what the fuck,

Screen Daily has revealed the cast for Werner Herzog’s next directorial effort, the horror film My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done? The movie marks Herzog’s first collaboration with fellow screen maverick David Lynch, who serves as executive producer.
Michael Shannon, the Bug star (pictured) who’s currently up for an Oscar for Revolutionary Road, Shadow Of The Vampire’s Willem Dafoe, Sisters’ Chloe Sevigny, Fango fave Udo Kier and Lynch-film regular Grace Zabriskie will star in My Son, which Eric Bassett is producing. The movie is inspired by a true case in which a San Diego man, obsessed by a Sophocles play, murdered his mother with a sword. “I always wanted to make a horror film, but not with bloody axes and chainsaws,” Herzog tells the trade, though he previously dabbled in the genre with Nosferatu The Vampyre and the mockumentary Incident At Loch Ness.

Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road, Bug), Willem Dafoe (Daybreakers, Anamorph, American Psycho) and Chloe Sevigny (Zodiac, The Killing Room) have all signed on to star in Werner Herzog's psychological horror tale My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done?, reports Production Weekly. Son is loosely based on the true story of a San Diego man who acts out a Sophocles play in his mind and kills his mother with a sword. The low-budget feature will flash back and forth from the murder scene to the disturbed man's story. A guerrilla-style digital video shoot on Coronado Island is tentatively set for March.

Thanks to /film, we learned today that filming is set to commence in March on the Werner Herzog helmed production My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done. Cameras will roll in both Peru and the Coronado Island region of California.
Some casting news came down as well. Along with the previously announced Michael Shannon (Bug, pictured), Udo Kier, Grace Zabriskie, Willem Defoe, and Chloe Sevigny have all signed on to the project, which is loosely based on the true tale of a San Diego man who believes himself in a Sophocles play and, accordingly, slaughters his mother with a sword. Scenes of the murder will be mixed into the plot line as flashbacks, and we’ll get to know the killer very well indeed. It's assumed Shannon will play the son and Zabriskie the mother.
Herzog explains his attraction to the project thusly: "I always wanted to make a horror film,

When I covered actor, supporting actress and actress, I combined all the competitors into one fictional composite character... but with this category, what's the point? The only thing you must know (if you don't already) is that this guy has serious psychological issues. Whether he's a mathematician, a pedophile, a super villain, a politician or an acclaimed actor, he's just plain nuts! Mental disturbances = your surest way into the Oscar race (if you have a penis. For actors with vaginas, the rules are a bit different)
Over at the Supporting Actor Page there's detailed silly theorizing as to how each contestant got nominated as well as a poll that pleads for your take on this race (preference wise. After all, we all know what to predict). Who do you think gave the best performance? Robert Downey Jr, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Michael Shannon, Josh Brolin or the late and greatly missed Heath Ledger?

Michael Shannon was nominated for an Oscar today for his superb supporting role in Sam Mendes' otherwise glossily imperfect period drama "Revolutionary Road," so the world's about to be paying him a lot of well-deserved attention. But if you've seen him act before, on the screen or on stage, you've already noticed him. Shannon's established himself in the past few years as the guy who can walk away with a film under the noses of established stars -- see "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead," see the aforementioned Mendes film, or better yet, see the edgier lead roles he's taken in indies like "Bug," "Shotgun Stories" or "The Missing Person," which had its premiere at Sundance this year. Directed by Noah Buschel, the film finds Shannon playing John Rosow, a private eye in the most noir tradition who's hired to follow a man who turns out
