Sarah Daniels teaches in Lancaster where the majority of students are of color, mostly black. She soon develops a deep prejudice, hatred, and even fear of blacks, and even avoids sitting next to black men while traveling on the subway. When she finds out about a vacancy in Belmont College in Vermont, a community she believes is predominantly white, she re-locates there.

Once there, she does not disclose her prejudice about blacks and settles down to teach her students.

But her past will come to revisit after a black student, Simon Brick, becomes the target of a hate crime. The administration of Belmont College respond by staging a forum, and paying some 'lip service'. But after more incidents take place against Simon, and with heavy media presence, the administration, who has already labeled her as a 'minority liaison', ask her to prepare a ten point list to resolve racism.
