Chadwick Boseman Will Wear '42' in Jackie Robinson Biopic

12 December 2011 7:19 AM, PST | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

Sounds like the Jackie Robinson biopic that we told you about last week is getting ready to step up to the plate. The team behind "42" has apparently found its star with Chadwick Boseman, a young actor whose resumé mostly includes one-offs in TV shows like "Fringe" and "Justified."

However, Boseman's no stranger to playing sports legends onscreen. He appeared as running back Floyd "The Franchise" Little in "The Express," a movie about footballer Ernie Jones. Jones was another big breaker of the color barrier in that he was the first African-American to take home the Heisman.

This role is definitely a bit of a coup of Boseman; it had attracted the interest of Columbus Short from "Stomp the Yard" and "Death at a Funeral," as well as Michael B. Jordan, a fan favorite from "Friday Night Lights" and "Parenthood." Jordan was also in the incredible HBO series "The Wire" as Wallace, »

Chadwick Boseman & Harrison Ford Cast in Jackie Robinson Movie

9 December 2011 8:17 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Legendary Pictures has confirmed and officially announced today (via Deadline) casting for their upcoming Jackie Robinson biopic, set to be directed by writer/filmmaker Brian Helgeland. Up-and-coming actor Chadwick Boseman (seen above), seen in The Express and NBC's "Persons Unknown", will play the iconic baseball star Jackie Robinson, and Harrison Ford will play Branch Rickey, the Mlb exec who "broke the color barrier" by signing Robinson in 1945. This sounds like it will be a spectacular film that will pay tribute to the legacy and impact of Robinson, especially with Legendary behind it and an actor they're confident in. Harrison Ford on the other hand, still acting in prominent roles when he can, will star as Branch Rickey, the "innovative Major League Baseball executive" who is best known for breaking their color barrier by signing Jackie Robinson to a minor league contract in 1945. Two years later, at the start of the »

Harrison Ford has officially signed on to the role of Branch Rickey, the the Hall of Fame baseball executive who integrated the sport by promoting Jackie Robinson to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947, Legendary Pictures announced today.

Meanwhile a relatively unknown, up-and-coming young actor has landed the role of the iconic ballplayer.

Yesterday, Ford’s name was floated as a possible contender for the part. Robert Redford had been long interested in the role — and reportedly attached as recently as last April. The film is known as 42 (referencing Robinson’s uniform number). The film, written and directed by Brian Helgeland (Payback, »

Chadwick Boseman Cast As Jackie Robinson In ‘42’; Harrison Ford Signs On

9 December 2011 5:28 PM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Variety reports that Brian Helgeland and Warner Bros. have taken an unusual turn for their Jackie Robinson-centered 42, casting Chadwick Boseman as the iconic baseball star. (No, me neither.) The actor has spent the majority of his career in random episodes of random TV shows, with the occasional film role, such as The Express, being thrown his way. I don’t think you need me to tell you that this is a huge deal for him.

Not only because he’s playing one of baseball’s most iconic figures, either; Variety also confirms Harrison Ford‘s role as Branch Rickey, the man who signed Robinson into the Mlb in 1947 and forever changed the game. When he was rumored just yesterday, many (including myself) didn’t see it happening — if only because the once-iconic actor had relegated himself to easy genre fare or features drowned in sentimentality.

The latter characteristic could easily apply to here, »

Relative Newcomer Chadwick Boseman to Play Jackie Robinson in ’42;’ Harrison Ford Confirmed

9 December 2011 4:00 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Briefly: We've just heard that Harrison Ford is the latest actor [1] that the producers of Jackie Robinson film 42 have eyed to play Branch Rickey, the La Dodgers exec who helped break the color barrier in baseball by signing Jackie Robinson. While we don't know if Ford will end up playing the role (somehow I expect not) we do know who'll play Jackie Robinson. Chadwick Boseman, whose credits are primarily in small TV roles going back to 2003, will play Robinson, according to Variety [2]. Update: Looks like I was wrong in the opening paragraph, as Jeff Sneider at Variety just said via Twitter [3], "Breaking: Harrison Ford set to play Branch Rickey in Legendary Pictures' Jackie Robinson biopic 42! Link coming..." The full press release from Legendary Pictures is below. Brian Helgeland wrote and will direct; this is the evolution of a Jackie Robinson film that has been kicking around Hollywood for some time. »

Newcomer Chadwick Boseman in Talks to Play Jackie Robinson in Biopic 42

9 December 2011 3:45 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Legendary Pictures is moving quickly on their Jackie Robinson drama 42. Written and to be directed by Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential), the film chronicles how Brooklyn Dodgers general manager Branch Rickey and Robinson worked together to eradicate segregation in baseball in 1947. Just yesterday we reported that Harrison Ford was being eyed for the Rickey role, and now Variety reports that the studio has settled on relative newcomer Chadwick Boseman (The Express) to take on the role of famed ballplayer Robinson. There’s no update on Ford’s involvement, but I’d really like to see him sign on. It’s been so long since he’s done any heady dramatic work, and I think the role of Branch Rickey would be a nice challenge for him. With the role of Robinson set, hopefully we’ll hear more casting news soon. »

Who's That Girl? It's Nicole Beharie

22 October 2011 12:15 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Kurt here. Considering the overall deficit of good roles for great black actresses (an issue to which this site is no stranger), moviegoers really can't be too hard on Nicole Beharie for offering them such rare and infrequent peeks at her remarkable talent. Still, watching those peeks (and they're watchable indeed), it's easy to send "grrrs" in this petite, 26-year-old beauty's direction, as she's thus far only appeared in five movies, two of them not even on the big screen. Why must she deprive us so? Her phone has to at least be ringing a little bit, and it can't just be about her selectivity, as the titles she's appeared in, on the whole, aren't exactly of the street-cred variety. So, what, then, has she been doing?

Quite a lot, as it turns out. My first exposure to Beharie was in early 2009, in a little film called American Violet, which »

Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Adds Rob Brown to the Cast

14 October 2011 5:12 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Though filming has been underway for quite some time now, the casting additions to Christopher Nolan‘s The Dark Knight Rises seem to keep piling up in droves. Most recently was last month’s announcement that Adam Rodriguez, perhaps best known for his work on CSI: Miami, would be joining the crew. It doesn’t look like Nolan and company are quite finished, though, as Rob Brown, the star of 2008′s moderately acclaimed but financially disappointing The Express, has also come on board the cast. [Variety]

As you’ve probably heard countless times already, Nolan‘s group of performers for this installment — Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Anne Hathaway, Marion Cotillard, and Juno Temple — is absolutely stacked. I have a sneaking suspicion, however, that the group of characters may be getting out of hand — how much ground, after all, is it possible to sufficiently cover in a single film? »
