Lewis has to deal with two voids in his life: his wife Val, killed by a hit and run driver, and Morse, whose wisdom and sharp tongue energized and rattled him. The humanity of Lewis amidst the ambitions and haughtiness of Oxford populace is endearing. Hathaway is the support without the sacrifice and the intellect without imposition. The other players can be more than background, the fine actors of England providing ample supply. Dr. Laura Hobson is the mirror for all that keeps Robbie together. Robbie's boss Innocence is no substitute for Morse's boss Strange, but she has yet to learn to stand by the odd man out. Each episode creates an appetite for more. With Morse in the background, at times in the most playful manner, the speed of the series can be anyway you like it. For new viewers there may be blanks around.
