Loosely based on the comic book series, the story opens as Carnage breaks out of an insane asylum and wreaks mayhem. Spider-man immediately sets out to stop him. You start off with Spidey but in certain parts you get to choose between him and Venom, which takes you through an alternate routes. The gameplay is your standard beat-em-up, the regular punching and jump-kicking, with the addition of the all important webbing. Brilliantly animated cut-scenes echo the artwork in the comic-books. Did You Know?

This game isn't an original product based on the general Spider-Man comic-book universe as most super-hero games usually are, instead it is based on a specific mini-series of the Marvel universe called Maximum Carnage. Much like the game, the series begins with Spider-Man's enemy Carnage escaping jail, who after gathering some equally psychotic 'pals', goes out on a killing spree all over New York. This time not even Spider-Man alone can stop him, so an uneasy alliance of superheroes spearheaded by Spider-Man and his nemesis Venom is formed to try and stop the madness. Spanning over 14 issues and encompassing all Spider-Man titles at the time, Maximum Carnage was a massive development by Marvel with lots of guest appearances and remains to this day one of Spidey's most ambitious and certainly most violent (a fact sadly toned-down for the game) sagas ever. Okay, but follows the comic book story it was based on too closely.

This game is based on I think a ten part series of comics known as Maximum Carnage. The play style is sort of like the type found in the X-men, avengers, and various arcade games which are like the old Double Dragon game. You go around the city busting heads, punching and kicking and using your web to fight those in the city affected by Carnage's influence in the city. You fight as either Spidey or Venom. You can also collect power-ups that summon forth other heroes found in this series and this is the drawback of the game. Well one of the drawbacks as Spidey doesn't really get to swing around the city all that much here either. I wish they would have made this one multi-player and made a few more of the heroes playable such as Captain America and Firestar. Also, the fights with the other super villains can be a real pain as they all attack at once a lot of the times. They also don't make some of them all that memorable. I would rather have a super fight featuring one maybe two of them at a time. Instead it is the same type of fight you have with random thug, only more annoying as is the fights with Carnage. The story is exactly like the comic, which is somewhat cool, but it also limits what the game can do. They only have the super villains and heroes present in that series and the story is too short for it as well. Still, I love a good fight in the streets and it does do that.
