In the fall of 2005, the St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase was showing handfuls of films on the "Chicks Rule" night. The films included "Recycled Air", a mediocre film about a hospital patient struggling to find a cigarette; "Mary Wants To Kill", another dull film, about a girl trying to resist her rage; "Steakout at 10th Street" about a sly detective hunting down a lone mobster; "Choice", a film I myself appeared in, about a groom choosing between two brides; "Tears Falling Into Snow", yet another dull film, nothing much more than an Asian girl walking on some train-tracks; and there was even a short documentary about belly-dancing. There was one movie that unfortunately is still looming in my mind, mainly because there was not a film I hated more.
Jonathan Waters' "Mistaken Love Stories, Part II" is an utter waste of time. I have to confess that I have never seen Part I, but should I? I wouldn't think so. This is the absurd tale of a girl named Lindsay, who is secretly living life as a lesbian as is still trying to contact another girl with whom she had an affair with but whom is trying to forget her. This other girl also has a husband who knows about the girls affair and is angry about it. Lindsay also has a father with whom she has a sour argument with, after he, too, finds out about her orientation.
Films about lesbians only work if they are believable and three-dimensional. Rather than acting like a short version of David Lynch's "Muholland Drive", though, this film is more like a dwarf of "Better Than Chocolate". Jonathan Waters feels that in order to spice up his script he has to shove in lots and lots of swearing and profanity. If he wants to be a great director & writer someday, he should avoid this. And maybe he should avoid analyzing the complicated world of homosexuality as well.
