I'm a fan of the original novel and came to the film with some trepidation but I thought it was a brilliant piece of work. More "inspired by" than a straight adaptation but there's nothing wrong with that. I thought it was witty, funny, emotional and yet with a small note of melancholy threading through. The cast were all excellent and I was especially impressed with Ben Miles. What a delicate, sad little performance, making us care for this pompous vicar. KeeleyHawes was radiant. Some friends thought she was a little old for the role but I think it made the almost- on-the-shelf theme work especially well. It's a shame it wasn't shot in Dorset but Hardy's Wessex has long vanished from their, subsumed in large fields, double-yellow lines, pylons, traffic. It's a vanished world, as Hardy already knew.

I hope it comes out on DVD.
