Michael K. Williams on Why ‘The Night Of’ Doesn’t Need to Return, and His ‘Emotional Void’ After ‘Black Market’ — Turn It On Podcast
Last Week’S Podcast: Vice’s Shane Smith on Trying to Avoid the ‘Crack Cocaine’ of Donald Trump — IndieWire’s Turn It On Podcast

There aren’t many actors as busy as Michael Kenneth Williams. Probably still best known as Omar on HBO’s classic “The Wire,” these days he’s all over the place: Playing Leonard Pine, opposite James Purefoy, in SundanceTV’s “Hap and Leonard”; as Ken Jones in the ABC limited series “When We Rise,” about the gay rights movement; or as Freddy Knight in HBO’s “The Night Of,” playing a Rikers inmate who befriends Naz (Riz Ahmed).

All of those roles are Emmy-eligible. But possibly the most personal work Williams has done recently wasn’t an acting gig at all. On Viceland’s “Black Market,” the actor served as a real-world journalist – entering the dangerous world of illicit trade, such as gambling underworld in New York,

Is Sherlock director set to take on James Bond 25?

Author: Scott Davis

New rumours this morning on the return of Bond – James Bond…

Out of all the franchises and sequels in and around the multiplexes during this year – whether it’s superheroes, car racers or apes taking over the planet – there’s one big series that is missing: 007. Yes, England’s greatest spy has been away from cinemas for almost two years now and while that’s not unusual, everything in regards to the future of James Bond is up in the air.

First, star Daniel Craig has been decided cryptic about whether or not he will be returning for Bond 25 (his fifth outing as the title character) and has yet to say one way or another. Then, a bigger reason for the uncertainty about the series is to do with the rights, which have expired with MGM and Eon Productions and the company, headed by Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson,

James Bond 25 Targets Luke Cage Director Paul McGuigan

James Bond 25 Targets Luke Cage Director Paul McGuigan
As fans wait to see who'll control the James Bond franchise next, with a bidding war recently starting between five different studios, Eon Productions is trying to lock down their next director, as they also wait for Daniel Craig to commit to the movie as well. With Skyfall and Spectre director Sam Mendes long since bowing out, the producers are meeting with filmmakers, including Irish director Paul McGuigan, who is considered to be a top candidate for the job. Nothing is set in stone at this point, but writers Neil Purvis and Robert Wade are currently working on the script.

IndieWire broke the news of Paul McGuigan being in contention for the directorial gig, but it isn't known at this time what other contenders are also being considered. Eon Productions was reportedly so impressed with his work in the upcoming Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool with Annette Bening and Jamie Bell,

Brooklyn Nine-Nine Ep Teases Gina's Fate, the Return of Amy's Ex and 'Annoying' Guest Star Nathan Fillion

Just how worried should fans of Brooklyn Nine-Nine be about whether Gina Linetti survived that bus accident? We posed that very question to co-creator Dan Goor ahead of Tuesday’s spring premiere (8/7c, Fox).

“On a scale from 1-10, where 10 is the highest, I would say [fans] should be at like a 7,” Goor tells TVLine. “We saw a city bus hit a human being… it’s a legitimate concern.” (Ruh-roh!)

Designated Survivor Season 1 Review

One episode was provided prior to broadcast.

Even with American Horror Story and The Exorcist on the docket, there are few things in this fall TV season more eerie than the timing of Designated Survivor, ABC’s bracing political thriller. Appearing in the midst of one of the most politically disheartening, culturally destructive, and socially depressing White House races in modern American history, the David Guggenheim-created series immediately puts its finger on the quickening pulse of the times with a grim what-if scenario: what if a terrorist attack wiped out so many high-level governmental figures that the office of the President wound up bequeathed to a mid-level secretary wholly unprepared for the job?

In few other years could such a premise echo the real world so explosively. And luckily for ABC, the series’ execution (at least its powderkeg of a pilot, the only episode provided for review) remains rooted

First 2 'Luke Cage' Episodes Get 'Victor Frankenstein' Director
It's been a big week for Luke Cage, with series star Mike Colter confirming that the series will debut on September 30. Over the weekend, filmmaker Paul McGuigan (Victor Frankenstein) teased on his Twitter page that he directed the first two episodes of this highly-anticipated series. While he's best known as a filmmaker, Paul McGuigan has also made his mark on the small screen as well.

The filmmaker has directed a number of pilot episodes throughout his career, including FX's miniseries Thief, Lifetime's Devious Maids, ABC's Lucky 7 and ABC's new series The Family, which debuted earlier this month. He has also directed four episodes of Sherlock, plus episodes of Smash and Scandal. On the big screen, he most recently directed Victor Frankenstein, along with other films such as Push,

Victor Frankenstein movie review: monster mush

A riff on the Hollywood conventions of a story we know very well already, with little new to say. James McAvoy’s mad scientist is fun to watch, though. I’m “biast” (pro): like James McAvoy a lot

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

You know this story,” mad-science sidekick Igor informs us more than once in voiceover. We do indeed… and Victor Frankenstein doesn’t have a lot new to offer us, so it’s sort of odd that the movie would go out of its way to remind us of that. We see everything here through the eyes of the hunchback Igor… who is, it transpires, neither a hunchback nor named Igor; and of course there was no hunchback nor an Igor nor even a lab assistant in Mary Shelley’s novel. This is more a riff on

Victor Frankenstein Trailer With Intro By James McAvoy And Daniel Radcliffe

James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe introduce you to their new film in a special version of the trailer for Victor Frankenstein, and this one is just as crazy as a Frankenstein film written by Max Landis is likely to be.

Told from the perspective of Igor (Radcliffe), this is a very different take on the tale of the mad scientist and his creation.

A little like taking Sherlock Holmes and running an updated, slick, action vehicle out of the general premise, Landis spins a wild-looking tale, with a Frankenstein that isn’t quite as likely to get pitchforked, but may have larger problems.

The film also marks the return to feature films of director Paul McGuigan, which is somewhat odd in itself, because it’s been quite the hiatus since Push and Lucky Number Slevin, but if the trailer can be believed, it looks like he’s at the top of his game.

Victor Frankenstein Trailer

  • TheMovieBit
Coming from director Paul McGuigan (Push, Sherlock) and screenwriter Max Landis (Chronicle, the upcoming American Ultra), Victor Frankenstein puts a spin on Mary Shelley’s classic horror tale, focusing on the friendship between the titular monster creating scientist (James McAvoy) and his faithful assistant Igor (Daniel Radcliffe), and the toll Victor’s obsession with creating life takes on it. There’s a decidedly modern edge to this new adaption, and I find it quite refreshing that the movie seems to be more about Victor and Igor than the monster. This is a story we have seen time and again, so offering a new spin on familiar elements is incredibly welcome. As is the central pairing, who seem to be having an absolute blast here. Especially with McAvoy relishing every moment as the ultimate mad scientist. Released: 25th November (U.S.)/5th December (Irl/U.K.)
