Could this finally be the weekend the box office creeps out of the gutter? Yup, it looks like the time has come. Sherlock Holmes and the first two Alvin and the Chipmunks movies were all big moneymakers and their predecessors are poised to follow in their footsteps, albeit with slight dips. The first Sherlock Holmes opened with a whopping $62.3 million, but Game of Shadows is on track to post a number more comparable to National Treasure: Book of Secrets, about $44 million. Similarly, Alvin and the Chipmunks and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel started their runs with $44.3 million and $48.9 million respectively, but Chipwrecked might have trouble »

Fast National Ratings for Friday, Dec. 3, 2011
As usual, CBS emerged victorious from Friday's ratings race. With new episodes of "A Gifted Man," "CSI: NY" and "Blue Bloods," CBS handily beat the other networks. Interestingly, though, The CW got a major boost from its fall finale of "Supernatural," and the show actually beat NBC in the 9:00 hour. Unfortunately, "Nikita" didn't fare as well, tying its all-time series low.
CBS averaged 9.6 million viewers and a 6.1 rating/10 share in households. ABC was second with 4.7 million, 3.1/5, followed closely by Fox with 4.3 million and a 2.8/5. NBC came in fourth overall with 2.8 million, 1.9/3, and The CW trailed with 1.8 million, 1.1/2.
In the adults 18-49 demo, CBS again won with a 1.4, followed by Fox with 1.3, ABC with 1.2, NBC with a measly 0.7 and The CW just barely coming in fifth with a 0.6.
Friday hour by hour:
CBS: "A Gifted Man" (9.7 million viewers, 6.3/10 households)

Fast National ratings for Friday, Nov. 25, 2011
It was a night of reruns, holiday specials and movies - so who came out on top? CBS did, as usual, but by a much slimmer margin than the Eye normally wins. A "Blue Bloods" rerun was the overall ratings winner for the night.
CBS averaged 5.3 million viewers and a 3.3 rating/6 share in households. ABC was second with 4.5 million, 2.7/5, NBC was third with 3.979 million, 2.5/4 and Fox was barely fourth with 3.977 million and a 2.4/4. The CW trailed with 1.5 million, 0.9/2.
In the adults 18-49 demo, it was almost exactly reversed. Fox won with a 1.2, followed by ABC with a 1.1, and then CBS and NBC at 1.0. The CW was fifth with a 0.4.
Friday hour by hour:
ABC: "Shrek the Third" (4.08 million, 2.4/4)
NBC: "National Treasure: Book of Secrets" (4.05 million, 2.6/5)

Grimm 1.04 "Lonelyhearts" Review
Apologies for not getting a review out for last week's episode. My laptop tried to go into winter hibernation for a week and a half, but I think I got it under control.
One of my main problems with the pilot of Grimm was its worrying dual selves, wherein the show could go big and a little campy or it could go dark and somewhat gritty, with both sides of the coin containing a certain amount of credibility. It's a backhanded sort-of problem ("you do too many things well! stop it!") that generally gets worked out through time, network notes, and fan feedback, but until it does get worked out, episodes tend to be more hit-and-miss than the talent involved would make you think.
What's most interesting about "Lonelyhearts" is how much of a resemblance it bears to the pilot and how much better than the pilot it actually is. »

“Horizons,” a scifi tale taking place in a post-apocalyptic world, is having no trouble getting actors interested. Tom Cruise is already attached and Jessica Chastain of “The Help” has been cast, but there is still one other major part to be filled.
They need someone for the other female lead, and according to Deadline, it’s down to Hayley Atwell, Diane Kruger and Kate Beckinsale. Apparently the three headlining actresses will be reading this weekend, after which one will have to be chosen.
Fans of the Splash Page should know Hayley Atwell from “Captain America: The First Avenger.” Diane Kruger, meanwhile, has starred in “National Treasure: Book of Secrets” and “Inglourious Basterds.” Kate Beckinsale stars in the “Underworld” movies and has also been in “Pearl Harbor” and “The Aviator.” So in other words, all three actresses have impressive film credits.
The role to be filled is of a woman who »

While Dredd's mission is to act as judge, jury and executioner in a dystopian future where there is no appeal and every sentence is death, the producers of the new film about the comic book lawman may have already acquitted its director.
An earlier report by the La Times stated the movie's director, Pete Travis, had been removed from postproduction following disagreements with film executives. With the film - starring Karl Urban - now in the editing phase, Dredd writer-producer Alex Garland (28 Days Later) was said to be taking over the splicing duties, and in turn seeking a co-director credit.
Despite the story coming from three supposedly connected sources, original speculations look to be inaccurate according to both Travis and Garland in a joint statement.
"During all stages of the filmmaking, Dredd has been a collaboration between a number of dedicated creative parties", they said. "From the outset we »

FremantleMedia North America is producing two new series that have definitely pinged on the SciFi Mafia radar. First, they’re rebooting the 1992 sci-fi movie Universal Soldier as a TV series. Even better, it’s being written by Damian Kindler (Stargate, Sanctuary).
Second, they’ve hired the creator and executive producer of National Treasure and National Treasure: Book of Secrets to create a TV drama series about two brothers who solve crimes and investigate some of the world’s greatest mysteries. The working title is Blood & Treasure.
Given that Rob Wright (Law & Order) wrote the series bible and the first episode, we’re looking forward to seeing how the puzzles and the solving play out, and are hoping that the longevity karma from his previous gig will carry over.
We’ll keep you posted on both.

It’s safe to say that most of us who are enthused by the big screen have some kind of affection for Indiana Jones. After all, what’s not to like? He’s adventurous, dry, good with the ladies, intelligent, unbelievably cool, and somewhat of a goofball.
George Lucas originally envisioned Indiana Jones as more of a James Bond variant, sipping martinis and smoking cigarettes, but Lawrence Kasdan’s wonderful script for Raiders of the Lost Ark painted him a little differently – the kind of man who only knows how to make it up as he goes, a trait which ultimately served to make him all the more human. Harrison Ford personified it majestically.
The Indy films are one of cinema’s best loved endeavours (we’ll try and forget about the latest one), and it’s assumed, as with most things, that everybody has a favourite. Unlike with The Lord of the Rings films, »
