'The Hangover'

8 June 2009 12:05 PM, PDT | From CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news

In America, there is the soft R rating for films like Michael Clayton, Shakespeare in Love and The Station Agent; all critically approved films that, but for a few profanities or some brief nudity, would be safe for the PG-13 viewing masses. And then there is The Hangover, a film that gleefully gives the finger to the MPAA and anyone with a sense of propriety.

My conservative parents would weep knowing that their daughter saw such a film, and they’d be even sadder to know that she really, really liked it.

Old School director Todd Philips undoubtedly ups the ante with this raunchy comedy. For anyone who was disgusted by shots of a running, naked Will Ferrell in the director’s previous film, The Hangover shows far more of bearded comedian Zach Galifianakis than should be legally allowed. And the alcohol-fueled, frat-boy humor of Old School looks like Hannah Montana: The Movie

Sorcerer’s Apprentice Still Adding Cast Members

18 May 2009 9:34 PM, PDT | From ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news

Sorcerer’s Apprentice has been in production for the past two months and they are still hiring actresses. When Screen Rant mentioned the film before, it didn’t have the incredibly beautiful Monica Belluci (The Matrix Reloaded) attached to it. She has since joined cast members Nicolas Cage, Alfred Molina and director Jon Turteltaub (Cool Runnings) in Disney’s big screen adaptation.

Sorcerer’s Apprentice is loosely (read not at all) based on the original poem by Johann Wolfgang Goethe; Disney drew its inspiration from the poem for the famous scene in the animated classic Fantasia. Based in modern-day Manhattan, Cage is sorcerer Balthazar Blake who is fighting the forces of darkness with the help of his young protégé (Jay Baruchel). Molina plays evil sorcerer Horvath who teams up with Drake Stone (Toby Kebbell) to “gain ultimate powers”.

Bellucci takes on the role of sorceress Veronica, who is Blake’s long-lost girlfriend.

Friday Report: 'Angels & Demons' Unravels, 'Star Trek' Survives

16 May 2009 3:39 PM, PDT | From Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news

On Friday, Angels & Demons debuted to an estimated $16.6 million on approximately 7,000 screens at 3,527 sites. As the sequel to The Da Vinci Code and the sole new nationwide release, it easily charted first for the day, selling about as many tickets as the first days of National Treasure: Book of Secrets and Red Dragon. However, it paled next to Da Vinci's $28.6 million opening day back in May 2006, and that National Treasure sequel played at Christmastime when initial grosses point to higher overall totals than they do in May. If Angels & Demons' weekend plays out like past similar movies, it will wind up with around $45 million, a far cry from Da Vinci Code's $77.1 million. Star Trek notched an ...

Captain Pike Beams Into Vulcan's 'Star Trek'

6 May 2009 11:46 AM, PDT | From CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news

Canadian actor Bruce Greenwood, who plays Captain Christopher Pike in J.J. Abrams Star Trek, is to be a guest at a special screening of the film arranged for the residents of the Alberta town of Vulcan. The advance screening of the film was arranged for 300 residents of Vulcan after the town's tourist board failed in its bid to persuade Paramount let them host the film's world premiere. That has since taken place in Sydney, Australia.

Captain Pike is seen in trailers for Star Trek urging Chris Pine's Kirk to enlist in Starfleet. The character appeared twice in the original series of Star Trek on which the new film is based. Jeffrey Hunter played Pike in the originally unaired first pilot for the series, 'The Cage'. When footage from that pilot was incorporated into the two-part episode 'The Menagerie', a badly disfigured Pike was played by Sean Kenney.

'Knowing' Tops North American Box Office

22 March 2009 7:19 PM, PDT | From Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news

Opened in theaters across the U.S. on Friday, March 20, "Knowing" has led the North American box office over the weekend and outsold its strongest competitors, "I Love You, Man" and "Duplicity" in the process. The Alex Proyas-directed thriller which was screened on approximately 4,300 screens at 3,332 sites has collected a solid bow with $24.6 million.

Starring Nicolas Cage as an astrophysicist who comes across an encrypted message containing prophecy of global cataclysm, the movie has become the actor's fifth-biggest movie opening of his career following "Ghost Rider", "National Treasure" and "National Treasure: Book of Secrets". It also marked Cage's ninth #1 film at the box office since 1997.

Commenting on Cage's role in the film's success, Summit Entertainment's head of domestic distribution Richard Fay shared on where the movie's appeal comes from. "The audience has pretty much bought Nicolas Cage as a big movie star, and they like him in

All the 'Love' for 'Knowing' at the box office

22 March 2009 1:32 PM, PDT | From Hitfix.com | See recent Hitfix news

A "Know"-it all beat a "bromance" this weekend as Nic Cage's "Knowing" topped the weekend box office with $24.8 million.  A significant success for Summit Entertainment, the thriller proved the fledgling mini-major can open a picture without "Twilght" in the title.  In a convenient bit of timing, Summit also released "Twilight" on DVD Saturday to reportedly brisk sales.  It was also be a good weekend for Cage, who has had his ups and downs at the box office the last few years.  The franchise sequel "National Treasure: Book of Secrets" aside, Cage hasn't had an opening this big since the...

Auto of the week: Ferrari 360 Spider

10 March 2009 3:38 AM, PDT | From Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news

You’ve just uncovered oodles of historical treasures, each from different periods and all thought lost. What do you do? Well, if you’re amateur cryptologist Benjamin Gates (played by Nicolas Cage), his cheeky chum Riley Poole (Justin Bertha) or National Archives employee Dr. Abigail Chase (Diane Kruger) from 2004 adventure yarn National Treasure you hand it over to the Us Government and keep only one per cent of the loot. Still, one per cent seems to be pretty significant as with it Ben and Abigail buy a mansion once owned by former Us Senator and signer of the Declaration of Independence, Charles Carroll and Riley snags this week’s tasty auto of the week – a Ferrari 360 Spider.

Being ever the sarcastic sidekick, Riley moans about the one per cent deal: “I have to settle with one per cent. One stinkin’ per cent. Half of one per cent, actually.” But with

Got A Friday Morning Hangover?

5 March 2009 11:06 PM, PST | From EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news

Brighten up those post-Thursday-night-on-the-town blues with a laugh at the trailer for Todd Phillips' new comedy The Hangover.  With Heather Graham and Jeffrey Tambor the most recognisable names in the line-up - and with neither appearing in this trailer - you could be forgiven for writing the stag party comedy off before it has even opened - but just hark back to Todd Phillips' classic Old School and you will rethink. The movie's actual stars include Yes Man's Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms (from the Us Office), Zach Galifianakis of various random TV shows such as Wonder Showzen and Reno 911 and  Justin Bartha (National Treasure: Book Of Secrets). The film covers old-ground in terms of plot, sounding a lot like Very Bad Things: Man is about to get married. Man takes hotch potch group of male friends to Las Vegas for one last blow out party. Man

Video Clip: Knowing -- Watch Nicolas Cage try and escape from a moving train

12 February 2009 | From Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news

I’m not going defend Nicolas Cage. Some of his movies are crap. Some of them are a lot of fun. When he shows up and acts, he’s incredible. And when it’s a paycheck…it’s not a fun ride. So saying all that, I’m looking forward to his new movie “Knowing” and it’s not because of him. The only reason the film is on my radar is director Alex Proyas. As the man behind “Dark City” and “I, Robot”, he always gets my attention. And since “Knwoing” is a sci-fi flick and I’m a sci-fi whore…well, you get why I’m going to see it. Anyway, Summit has just released a new clip from “Knowing” and it’s called Derailed. Can you guess it has something to do with a train....Here’s the clip and further down is the official synopsis: Clip

Teresa Palmer Joins Cage and Baruchel in 'Sorcerer's Apprentice'

10 January 2009 8:03 AM, PST | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

It's funny that the main reason that I recognize the name Teresa Palmer (Bedtime Stories), is as the girl who seemed to lose out on her fair share of high profile roles in 2008. But, it would appear that persistence really does pay off, because The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Palmer just signed on to star alongside Nicholas Cage and Jay Baruchel in Jerry Bruckheimer's take on The Sorcerer's Apprentice.

It has been almost a year since Bruckheimer first announced that he would be working on a live action version of Goethe's classic poem (but to be fair, most of us are probably more familiar with the Fantasia version). Jon Turteltaub (National Treasure: Book of Secrets) will direct the story of an apprentice (Baruchel) left in charge of his master's (Cage) magical workshop in modern day New York City. When the plucky apprentice decides to get a magical broomstick

Summit Entertainment has the chance for a big 2009 with some bonafide features in its sack and following up the late year bank account bulge thanks to Twilight, which will see its sequel, New Moon released in November. Other than that you have the intriguing Paul McGuigan feature Push, a return to the big screen for Alex Proyas with Knowing (although this one worries me), Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker (brand new trailer for that one here), the delayed Brothers Bloom from Rian Johnson and the animated Astro Boy, which I know a lot of people are interested in. All the cast, director and synopsis information is listed over the course of the next few pages as well as all the release dates for 9 new features.
