Terror Tidbits (Fango #290): The Infernal Triangle

19 December 2009 10:00 PM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

At the end of a long pier just off the beach at Surfer’s Paradise in the Australian state of Queensland, the three-story front end of an ocean liner sits on a huge pile of rocks. It’s not wrecked—although many of the people who walk its decks will be. Instead, it’s the ingenious solution to the problem of making a film that’s mainly set on such a vessel—one that you can’t really hire, or buy off eBay. It also helps when you need your movie to showcase real waves, and not the computer-generated variety.

The film is Triangle, and the writer/director is Englishman Chris Smith, the feverish brain behind Creep and the more recent, savagely hilarious Severance (which every workplace on the planet should sit down and watch for their own bonding benefits). The all-Australian cast includes Melissa George, who previously lensed 30 Days Of Night in New Zealand, »

Triangle (2009) Movie Review

11 December 2009 8:45 PM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Christopher Smith’s “Triangle” is a clever, tightly plotted supernatural thriller that, towards the end, actually feels more like a slimmer, more condensed version of a Paul Thomas Anderson drama than the third feature-length film from the guy who gave us “Creep” and “Severance”. The film is not nearly as gory as those other two, but it certainly packs more emotional punch and requires more of an investment in the old noggin to get through. Although yes, if you missed anything the first time around, you will benefit from a second or even third viewing, but to be honest with you, I’m not sure if you’ll want to take that plunge because, well, “Triangle” isn’t exactly the kind of film that lends itself to repeat viewing from an entertainment standpoint. One trip was certainly more than enough for me, and I suspect it’ll be the same »

Are Webisodes the Future of TV? ‘Girl Number 9′ Thinks So

23 November 2009 8:13 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

I’ve got a new addiction and it comes in the form of made-for-Web shows. The last one Screen Rant brought to you was Broken Toy by Forewarned Films and before that we introduced you to Joss Whedon’s  Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.  Now we want to introduce you to a great 6-episode crime-thriller from writer James Moran.

A lot of you may not have heard of James Moran but you may have seen his work on shows like Doctor Who, Torchwood, Crusoe and the great under-rated horror/comedy/thriller, Severance. Moran has now moved from writing scripts to directing short films and started with the enjoyably creepy Girl Number 9. Each episode is about 5 minutes, but the script and acting feel like a 45-minute network show. It leaves you wanting to watch the next, wanting to see how it ends and asking the question “Can You Save Her? »

Catch UK’s ‘Girl Number 9′ Before You Have to Pay For It

19 November 2009 11:33 AM, PST | Tubefilter.tv | See recent Tubefilter News news »

Within seconds of beginning my search for where I could watch this six-part UK-based web thriller, it had been compared to not one (Saw) but two (Seven) American movies and not one (24) but two (Lost) American television series. At almost the same time, Girl Number 9 was letting me know it was made specifically for the internet, and unlike anything I had seen before. Written by James Moran (Doctor Who, Torchwood,Severance) and starring Gareth David-Lloyd (Torchwood), Joe Absolom (Doc Martin, Personal Affairs), and Tracy-Ann Oberman (Doctor Who, Eastenders), the series has a lot of BBC talent to back it up—along with a huge advertising campaign. The Guardian in particular did a very interesting piece that was open-ended: it began its review at episode 1 and then added information as each subsequent episode was released. The author also encouraged its readers to join in the discussion in the comments section, »

Apocalyptic Devil's Playground Starts Production

10 November 2009 5:03 AM, PST | HugAZombie | See recent HugAZombie news »

When it comes to the recent output of zombie movies, it appears the the running "infected" zombie is greatly outpacing George Romero's classic, lumbering zombie. British production studio Black And White Films have two upcoming genre films with Dead Cert, a movie about the classic struggle between gangsters and vampires, and Expose, a remake of the 1976 film of the same name about a psycho personal assistant to a novelist, and now are jumping into the zombie genre with Devil's Playground.

Devil's Playground will be a infected zombie film about a killer (Craig Fairbrass from Dead Cert) who must find a cure to the illness causing the zombie apocalypse since he is slowly turning into a zombie as well. Myanna Burning (The Descent) plays the woman who may have the secret for the cure, while Danny Dyer (Severance) plays her ex-cop boyfriend. Janet Montgomery (Wrong Turn 3: Left for Dead »

New stills from British gothic horror Black Death

6 November 2009 6:21 AM, PST | 24framespersecond.net | See recent 24FramesPerSecond news »

This one pretty much does what it says on the tin. We’ve tracked down some new stills for Christopher Smith’s upcoming gothic horror - starring Sean Bean - Black Death. Those in the know will recognise Smith’s name as the brains behind several of our fave horrors of recent years, among them being the recently released ‘Triangle’ and the hilariously dark, horror comedy ‘Severance.’ Still in post production, Black Death is due out next year. Annoyingly we can’t direct link to the pics as they’re embedded in a Flash slideshow. But here’s how to see them. From the link select “completed films,” “fiction,” then “Black Death.” »
