There are plenty of films from the 1970s that would be considered a splatter flick, where they would push the envelope of violence and gore and even sex and nudity. Many of which would eventually become cult classic. One of those was Piranha, released in 1978, which really was considered a really dumb but fun movie that took a little inspiration from Jaws (1975). The sequel came out in 1981 called Piranha Part Two: The Spawning, which broke James Cameron into mainstream media. The film series would end there. Then in 2010 horror director Alexandre Aja released his remake of the cult classic. Not only did he embrace the tradition of splatter flicks but he took to it too a whole new level with this film. This film is filled with huge amounts of gore that makes Saving Private Ryan (1998) look like a kid's movie. Also the film is filled with huge amounts of nudity and sex. But does all this make a good film? Well the short answer is no. The film is meant to be dumb fun but the film can't find a tone that it likes and the amount of gore doesn't work with the conflicting changes in tone and supposedly funny tone. Also with poor acting the film doesn't deliver on all cylinders.
The film opens up after an earthquake causes a trench to open up when a horde of prehistoric Piranhas. Meanwhile at the same time the horny teens are celebrating spring break while the fish are hungry and they are heading straight for them.
Let's face a story about killer fish how much can we expect? The story is simple and the movie only runs 88 min long. But what is surprising with the short amount of time a couple of characters are very well developed. This is something I am surprised again. But really like those films of the 1970s there really isn't much story here. Someone is killed, someone investigates, someone else dies, more people die, repeat. That is essentially what the film is. Not something you have to invest a lot of thought or emotion into. Films like that are good, you can't always have films like The Godfather (1972) or One Flew over Cuckoo's Nest (1975). You do need to have films that are just there to entertain you for an hour or two and just let your brain float away. So in the beginning that's exactly what I thought I had gotten myself into. I watched some cheap deaths that were a little entertaining. Then you see some amazing looking girls taking their tops off and get completely naked and even making out. So you got to think the film was just going to be dumb fun but sadly I was wrong.
From past works from Alexandre Aja like The Hills Have Eyes (2006) you can tell that he has done some serious horror films before. But with this film it was clearly dumb fun at the beginning and even with the film going along the lines of just stupid and bad special effects but I can't say it wasn't entertaining. But with the film starting to press on it gotten just a little bit more dumb then Aja comes and does a complete 360. You have the massacre scene that comes up where he changes the mood completely and just goes to shock you for the sake of shocking you. People start pulling people out of people of the water like a war film with huge amounts of wombs and gratuitous amounts of blood and gore. John Carpenter once said (paraphrasing a bit) that if you show something the audience doesn't want to see then they will turn on you. I believe this is exactly what happened, I can handle gore in the right setting. It all worked in films like Saving Private Ryan (1998), Rambo (2008), and other films like The Wolfman (2010) and even Aja's other film The Hills Have Eyes (2006) but with this film it didn't work. The beginning had the right amount to allow the audience to still enjoy themselves. Then he drops us into a huge war zone and the dramatic shift just doesn't work for me. Not only that it gets even dumber and dumber that even I can't just sit there and accept it.
The special effects in the film are very poor. You just look at it and just want to scream fake! I realize I shouldn't take this film so seriously but I thought computers could do better work than the ones I saw in the film.
The acting, I think we all knew was going to be bad once we saw porn stars starring in it. Jerry O'Connell was so annoying as Derrick Jones. Kelly Brook and Riley Steele look fantastic and is awesome see them motor-boating maybe someday they will get some acting lessons. Jessica Szohr is OK as Kelly. Steven R. McQueen is okay as Jake Forester. Adam Scott is good but underdeveloped as Novak. Don't get fooled with Richard Dreyfuss getting highest billing, it is a cameo but a fun one that does reference his very famous role as Matt Hooper in Jaws (1975). Ving Rhames is decent as Deputy Fallon. Elisabeth Shue gives a good performance as Julie Forester, I did honestly like her. Christopher Lloyd is underused with his terrific part as the scientist named Mr. Carl Goodman which feels like a little bit of a nod to his most well- known part, Doc Brown from Back to the Future (1984).
So ultimately what started off as a dumb fun movie turned into a shift mood swing with enough gore to make you queasy. The acting is all over the place and the special effects are just god awful. The entire movie is nothing but boobs and blood. The film becomes nothing but trash by the end.
