Jamie's School Dinners
jboothmillard21 July 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I occasionally watched The Naked Chef to see him cook for his mates, but this for me is a much better show for Jamie Oliver. He was basically sick of the non-healthy food being served in public schools and kids eating it, so he decided to do something about it. He basically visited a few schools around the country, and banned junk food for meals, and all the kids could eat was healthy stuff like fruit, vegetables and properly made food. The one food that Jamie hated more than any other was the Turkey Twizzler, I think it looks disgusting too. One highlight for me was him showing what a chicken is made up of, supposedly. This programme made such an impact with the Prime Minister, that now all schools in the country have to go with this change. Jamie Oliver has won numerous awards for his hard work, good for him. Narrated by Timothy Spall. He was number 28 on The 100 Worst Britons, but that's obvious to change, pucker! Very good!

Jamie Oliver is Okay
frankiehudson11 September 2006
I never used to like Jamie Oliver - too young and too trendy, lots of trendy little catchphrases like 'Pukker'.

His Naked Chef series was okay, but - when watching any television cookery programme - I never take the slightest interest in actually cooking his recipes or anything at home. Does anyone? Does anyone actually write down what these TV chefs do and try it themselves? Don't the chefs themselves just make it up as they go along? I never understand the obsession with food, either. There are simply too many TV cookery programmes on these days. And none will ever reach the standard - in cooking and flamboyance/charisma - of the great Keith Floyd.

However, Jamie Oliver has done a great job in promoting healthy eating in schools. Brilliant.

In the Kidbrooke Comprehensive edition, Oliver has to produce meals for about 500 pupils for 37p each. That's about £185 for a day's lunch at school. That's about £36,000 a year for the school canteen budget (assuming about 13 weeks of the school being closed down for holidays). That's PATHETIC. It should be DOUBLED immediately. Pay the headmistress less, perhaps. Or the over-paid teachers.

I don't blame the regular canteen staff. They seem happy and genuinely work hard producing their junk food. They just need to learn to cook properly, not just settle for being re-heaters.

Oliver produces some nice, herby tomato ciabatta bread, or something and it all looks very appetising. Then he goes off to his 15 restaurant, somewhere in trendy Shoreditch, I imagine.

Absolutely inspiring

Warning: Spoilers
I strongly recommend that you watch this. Jamie Oliver tries to change the way school dinners are prepared to provide a better future for our children. Its so refreshing to see someone who is so passionate about good, wholesome, food trying to change the way that children are fed. Its not only about re-educating the government, who provide the budget for the school dinners, but also the parents, and the children themselves, as ultimately, they all have an input as to what our children eat. The results are remarkable, no longer are children tired, hyperactive, no more bouts of ADD AND an increase in school grades. You have to hand it to him, all its down to is eating wholesome, healthy food. But educating the people involved seems to be the hard work. This programme is so inspirational. I wasn't sure what to expect, but after watching, it has made me think a lot more about what I put into my own mouth... I have not even been able to look at a chicken nugget since!

This show was amazing!

Warning: Spoilers
I wish he would come and do something like this in America. Today's kids eat so much crap and parents and school food does not help at all. What Jaime did in those schools should be rewarded. He gets to the heart of the matter and tries to get these kids, schools and parents to eat better. By going out into the schools and children's homes and showing that it isn't hard to make food that is good for kids to eat and if you have them try it instead of giving into them then they will learn good food habits as well. This show is so amazing and I think everyone should watch it. Jamie Oliver once again has proved that he can do anything and he shows how much he cares about a cause.
