‘Empire,’ ‘Sunday Night Football’ Top List of Highest-Rated TV Shows for 2015-16

6 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

With the 2015-16 television season ended, NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” and Fox’s “Empire” were once again broadcast’s top-rated series in the 18-49 demo. But unlike last season, when the freshman run of “Empire” was the most watched non-sports show, this season no new series cracked the top 10. Instead the highest rated new series, NBC’s “Blindspot” finished tied for 13th in the demo rankings after spending much of the season behind the most comfortable lead-in NBC could provide it, “The Voice.”

Though “Empire” was once again broadcast’s best entertainment show with a 6.4 rating in Nielsen most-current numbers (live-plus-seven for all but the last two weeks of the season ending May 25), it did see a 9.9% decline from last season. That wasn’t nearly as steep a drop as many of its competitors suffered.

ABC was particularly hard hit, with its top drama and top comedy from last season suffering identical declines, »

NBC Bets on Maya Rudolph, Martin Short to Revive a TV Mainstay

26 May 2016 9:02 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

With the buzz around Beyonce’s “Lemonade” still fresh, many people have been asking Maya Rudolph to do her popular impression of the singer just one more time. Will she? “It’s got to be right,” the comic actress says in her best Beyonce voice. “It’s got to be just a little sour, and just a little bit sweet.”

Rudolph may find her moment next week, when she and actor Martin Short – known for everything from “Sctv” to giving voice to “The Cat In The Hat” on PBS – tackle an interesting mission. On May 31 at 10 p.m. on NBC, the pair will launch “Maya & Marty” a six-episode exploration of what for  a younger generation of viewers will be a new frontier: a variety show, complete with special guests, singing and comic sketches. Not everyone could hold their own under such circumstances, but Short and Rudolph can do more than just get laughs. »

Ratings: ‘The Voice’ Tops ‘Dancing With the Stars’ in Battle of Reality Show Finales

25 May 2016 9:25 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

In a battle of reality show finales, NBC’s “The Voice” got the best of ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” in key demos on Tuesday, with both shows down noticeably from last year and again paying the price of head-to-head combat.

Impacting the ratings for last night’s reality show finales was another strong delivery for the NBA Western Conference finals on TNT, with the Oklahoma City Thunder’s victory over the Golden State Warriors netting a 6.8 overnight household rating. This was the best NBA rating this postseason, edging out Game 1 of this series (6.7), which ended up averaging a 3.7 rating in adults 18-49 and 8.7 million total viewers.

Looking at Tuesday’s broadcast action, NBC’s “The Voice” averaged a 2.1 rating/7 share in adults 18-49 (likely to rise to a 2.2 in the finals) and 10.3 million viewers overall from 9 to 11 p.m., down more than 20% from last spring’s season-ender but »
