Secret Identity: Five Actors Who Could Play The Riddler

10 December 2009 2:17 PM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

From comedian Dane Cook to the fans themselves, it seems that everybody is crossing their fingers that The Riddler will show up in the eventual sequel to "The Dark Knight."

While the villain's involvement in a third "Batman" film is far from confirmed — heck, the actual existence of "Batman 3" is speculative at this point — it's worth wondering who could play Edward Nigma should he wind up in Christopher Nolan's return to Gotham City.

Given Nolan's proclivity towards a darker, more realistic tone than his live-action "Batman" predecessors, it's important to steer clear of actors that would take a hammy, parody-riddled approach to The Riddler. This is a character that should have wit and humor, sure, but also pose a threat. With those qualities in mind, I think that these five actors would do an excellent job at confounding the citizens of Gotham in an eventual "Batman 3."

A Serious Man and the odd movie out

29 November 2009 1:30 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

A Serious Man may be getting rave reviews – but it's like nothing the Coens have made before. Joe Queenan on weird one-offs and the directors who make them

About halfway through the very funny, very disturbing, very ethnic new film A Serious Man, the modern-day Job who is the serious man in question climbs up on to the roof of his ghastly 1960s Minneapolis suburban home and tries to adjust the antenna to improve his TV reception. Beleaguered on all fronts – conjugally, professionally, medically – Larry Gopnik, a dorky physics professor who may be about to lose his job and is very likely to lose his family, is a bright, principled Jewish man whose children have begged him to fix the antenna so they can watch F Troop, an idiotic 1960s comedy. Many of Larry's travails unfold as songs from Jefferson Airplane's seminal 1967 LP Surrealistic Pillow play in the background. »

My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done

24 November 2009 1:26 AM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

What happens when two of cinema’s greatest (and oddest) filmmakers collaborate on a project? The answer is: My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done. A new feature film directed by Werner Herzog and produced by David Lynch.

Starring Willem Dafoe, Michael Shannon, Chloe Sevigny and Brad Dourif, the film is centred around the strange (what else?), true life tale of a disturbed man obsessed with a Sophocles play, who murders his mother with a sword.

Werner Herzog, since his award-winning documentary Grizzly Man, has undergone a career renaissance. Along with Rescue Dawn, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans and his documentary features, he doesn’t seem to stop! As a filmmaker, he’s often displayed a penchant for the eccentric and weird. David Lynch, on the other hand, is downright weird through-and-through. Things have been quiet for Lynch since Inland Empire – an infuriating and brilliant film measure-for-measure. »

Geek Deal: Three Blu-Ray Movie Packs for $25

21 November 2009 1:39 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Amazon has some awesome deals on some select three Blu-Ray movie packs. Each of the listed packs below is only $24.99 each, and also comes with $5 credit towards select Amazon on-demand TV-Shows. That's basically $8.33 for each Blu-ray disc. Action Collection: Jumper, Transporter, Transports 2 Action Hero Collection: The Day After Tomorrow, I, Robot, The Terminator Hard Action Collection: Hitman, Street Kings, Man on Fire War Hero Collection: Behind Enemy Lines, Patton, Rescue Dawn Funny Guy Collection: Napoleon Dynamite, Office Space, Young Frankenstein Jock Collection: Dodgeball, Hoosiers, Rocky I always find it amusing how these three packs are grouped. They usually contain one or two good movies and a film you'd never ever buy. But at the price, it's probably still worth it for the two movies you do like. The Funny Guy Collection is probably the one exception, unless you're one of those people that hated Napoleon. »

Seven More "Remakes" We'd Love Werner Herzog To Direct

19 November 2009 4:50 PM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Controversy has followed Werner Herzog's "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans" right from the start. When word got to director Abel Ferrara that his original "Bad Lieutenant" film was being remade by Herzog and star Nicolas Cage, the outspoken director wished the other outspoken director would "die in hell." Herzog's response? "I have no idea who Abel Ferrara is. But let him fight the windmills, like Don Quixote." To which Ferrara shot back, "I'd rather chase windmills than steal other people's ideas. It's lame."

Ferrara's protectiveness is understandable, but his outrage is a little excessive, particularly given that, as Herzog's insisted all along, the new film is a remake in title only. The central premise may belong to Ferrara; this particular execution, with its sweaty atmosphere and iguana hallucinations, is all Herzog. The result is like watching a jazz musician riff on someone else's composition. You appreciate both »

During his remarkable 40-year career, Werner Herzog has made some of world cinema's boldest films -- including Aguirre, the Wrath of God, Stroszek, Fitzcaraldo, and a remake of Nosferatu. In recent years, he's approached mainstream success in the United States, with the eccentric documentary Grizzly Man and the Vietnam war film Rescue Dawn, which starred Christian Bale. His latest, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, features Nicolas Cage and Eva Mendes in the tale of a cop who tries to solve a brutal murder and keep his grip on reality while battling drug addiction, gambling debts, and familial woes. »

Screenwriter Hired for Feature Reworking of Documentary Young@Heart

16 November 2009 7:48 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Can't say I really get the mini-trend of remaking documentary films as dramatic features. Ok, Werner Herzog (Little Dieter Needs to Fly --> Rescue Dawn) gets a pass, mainly because he's Herzog. But translating Grey Gardens into a fictionalized piece robbed the story of something essential and, I think, added nothing. Last year saw the release of Young@Heart, a great little documentary about a group of senior citizens that performs their own versions of rock songs. Working Title Pictures picked up the rights to remake the film as a dramatic feature before the doc was even released. Now the company has a writer in mind for the project: Will Reiser, a former producer on Da Ali G Show. THR reports on the deal, and notes that just because Reiser is a former Ali G guy doesn't mean that this version of Young@Heart's story will be all comedy. Reiser »

Celebrate Veteran’s Day with a War Movie Overload

11 November 2009 2:33 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Instead of doing a cheesy list for Veteran's Day, we here at Fsr decided just to give a run down of all the war-type movies that we've covered over the years (the good, the bad, and the boots on the ground). Some of these you'll be able to pick up at the rental store on your way back home from work, but hopefully your employer was nice enough to give you the day off so you could sit back with a beer, some BBQ and a swelling fervor in remembrance of the monumental jobs done by the bravest members of our society. And since we're overloading here, we went ahead and included just about any flicks that involve soldiers and wartime. We even included some featuring those limey Brits! Look how far we've come since 1776. As an added challenge, why not watch all of them? The General (1927) Battleship Potemkin (1925) The Miracle of Morgan's Creek (1944) To Hell and Back (1955) Operation Petticoat »

Werner Herzog's School Teaches Lock-Picking and Bullet-Dodging

22 September 2009 7:30 PM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

Director Werner Herzog (Rescue Dawn, Grizzly Man) has announced the opening of his Rogue Film School, which is a series of several seminars scheduled to take place in various Us and international cities. If you think this is just another film school, think again. "The Rogue Film School is not for the faint-hearted," said Herzog. "It is for those who have traveled on foot, who have worked as bouncers in sex clubs or as wardens in a lunatic asylum, for those who are willing to learn about lock-picking or forging shooting permits in countries not favoring their projects." In addition to learning how to pick locks, the limited number of students will also learn about "the neutralization of bureaucracy, guerrilla tactics, and the exhilaration of being shot at unsuccessfully." That's right, you will learn how to dodge bullets. The first seminar will take place in a Los Angeles hotel on »

Greg’s 2009 Tiff Report: Day 5

17 September 2009 12:09 PM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

I was about a foot away from certain death yesterday. This is what is called a hook. Right now, one of two things is crossing your mind. 1) Oh my God! How did Greg almost die? Or 2) What idiot fucked up Greg's death? Read on to find out. It's my busiest day in Toronto as far as movies go, so I grab some coffee and head downtown. There's this very cool cafe right across where I'm staying in Toronto that makes a very decent cup of coffee. They also crank Ccr over the speakers which it makes that much more cool. I was standing in line and this dude comes up and puts his hand on my chest and says "I like your shirt." It is an awesome shirt, but I think the touching thing was kind of odd. I said thanks and ordered my coffee and that was that. Who does that? »

Tiff 2009 Must See List: Werner Herzog Double Header

4 September 2009 6:40 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

#5: Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans #6: My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done Werner Herzog films aren't exactly hard to come by - he regularly releases several in a given year - but his two features at this year's Tiff are notable for both being non-documentary works, which have been relatively scarce in Herzog's recent years. (His last was 2004's excellent Rescue Dawn. Before that, it was 2001's much-derided Invincible.)  Even stranger is that one of them is a quasi-remake of Abel Ferrara's Bad Lieutenant, a film that Herzog claims never to have seen (and whose director he claims never to have heard of). Its star is Nicolas Cage, whose recent stretch of stinkers is almost unparalleled considering some of the great work he's done in the past. The trailer, below, is frankly insane, and Variety's review [1] suggests it's in step with the film: "The film is offbeat, »

‘Cooking With Werner’ Herzog, Spot On Satire

12 August 2009 1:05 PM, PDT | Tubefilter.tv | See recent Tubefilter News news »

Celebrity impressions are always good for a chuckle. Rarely though are they good for much more. This one, Cooking with Werner, however, is an exception to the rule. Maybe its because the subject, German filmmaker Werner Herzog, is a such a greenfield of comedic grain ripe for harvest. You may not recognize him, but you've heard this guy— his signature droll narratives dominating his docu-films like Grizzly Man and Encounters at the End of the World. He's also helmed studio pics like Invincible and Rescue Dawn. And while the actor (Will Maier) playing Herzog is probably about thirty years his junior, his voice is spot-on. Really its a mid-1970's Herzog. It beauty is its clever parity, satirizing not only the eccentric filmmaker-poet but this whole celebrity cooking show trend that has a body count over 200 by now. The writing is well-researched, complete with references to a real life bet »

A Perfect Getaway from…Hollywood

5 August 2009 4:56 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Writer/director David Twohy is no stranger to the Hollywood system. Having toiled in it for just about 20 years now, he has become accustomed to the differences and contrasting accessibilities of large films vs. small. And since his much-hyped sci-fi epic The Chronicles Of Riddick was poorly received at the box office upon its 2004 release, he set out to follow up with something on a much smaller scale. While his new thriller, Rogue Pictures’ A Perfect Getaway, does have lush, sweeping landscapes and a cast of recognizable names, it’s very much about character as well, and its one-island setting is a great departure from the otherworldly expansiveness of Riddick.

“The original plan was to do a small movie, for me,” says Twohy, who also helmed the sci-fi sleepers The Arrival and Pitch Black. “This was sort of a reaction to big-budget, big-scale filmmaking. I wanted to do something smaller, »

Werner Herzog: Driven to the Ends of the World

4 August 2009 6:00 AM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Anyone who knows me personally (and is willing to listen to me ramble on about film) knows that I have an ongoing love affair with Werner Herzog. The man is just pure genius in my eyes and given his more than 50 films of various lengths and subjects, I have yet to see one that I haven’t enjoyed. (I haven’t seen them all yet, but getting darn close, I am!)

Herzog’s newest film is Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans which is [sort of ] a remake of the original 1992 Abel Ferrara version starring Harvey Keitel. Herzog’s version stars Nicolas Cage as The Lieutenant, with Val Kilmer, Eva Mendes, Brad Dourif, Jennifer Coolidge, Fairuza Balk and Xzibit rounding out the cast. Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans is set to open in theaters in late 2009/early 2010.

Technically, the only other remake Herzog has done was of his own film, »

Steve Zahn Fathers A Wimpy Kid

3 August 2009 10:53 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Steve Zahn is an enigma. The dude can act and if you.ve seen Rescue Dawn, you know that. Yet, he continues to take roles that expect nothing from him. If you.ve seen Strange Wilderness, then you know that as well. The flick would.ve satisfied me if all we had seen of it was the trailer (Come on. How hilarious was the laughing shark?). Watching the entire movie really ruined the experience. And it looks as though Steve plans to continue his foray into unchallenging work, as Variety reports that he has signed on to star as the father of the wimpy kid in Diary of a Wimpy Kid, an adaptation of the insanely popular youth fiction series. The movie follows a middle school aged social outcast through a single school year. As you can imagine, it doesn.t go entirely well. You can.t blame the guy »
