Cat In The Brain is a psychological masterpiece in the tradition of such cinematic classics as Psycho, Strait-jacket, Eraserhead and Fellini’s 8 1/2. Acclaimed Italian horror maestro Lucio Fulci, director of Zombie and The Beyond, stars in this blood-soaked epic as a director being driven insane by his own movies. New Rebates and Facilities Look to Boost Chilean Filming

16 May 2016 11:59 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Big changes are afoot in Chile.

Cash rebates of up to 20%-40% may launch before the year’s end. Ongoing talks with economic authorities are now “in an interesting phase,” says the Chile Film Commission’s Viccenza Martini Vera.

“There is absolute certainty in the film sector and in other institutions that Chile will soon take its place on the world stage among competitive locations.”

Such a move would be great for Chile on several levels, says Fabula producer Juan de Dios Larrain, whose brother Pablo’s latest drama “Neruda,” co-financed by Participant Media, competes at Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight. “Not only will it be good for Chile on economic terms, but what is invested in the country and on rebates will be largely compensated by the prestige and attention it will bring the country and the diversity of its locations.”

Meanwhile, Pinewood Studios inked a memo of understanding in November »

Friday The 13th: The Final Chapter – Midnights This Weekend at The Moolah

“Jason’s body has disappeared from the morgue!”

Friday The 13th: The Final Chapter screens Midnights this weekend (May 13th and 14th) at The Moolah Theater and Lounge (3821 Lindell Blvd, St. Louis, Mo 63108) as part of  Destroy the Brain’s monthly Late Night Grindhousefilm series.

Friday The 13th: The Final Chapter (1984), the fourth film in the venerable franchise, is considered by hard-core fans of the series to be the best, although it was hardly the “final Chapter” (there were at least 10 more). Directed by Joseph Zito (The Prowler) directed, which is indeed far above average by slasher standards and features a good cast of recognizable 80’s brat pack wannabes, including Crispin Glover (Back To The Future), Corey Feldman (The Goonies), Lawrence Monoson (Last American Virgin) and Judie Aronson (Weird Science). It also ranks as one of the goriest in the series, thanks to the return of makeup effects legend Tom Savini, »

30 Things We Learned from the Planet Terror Commentary

5 May 2016 7:31 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

“A lot of this was done at the very last minute.”

2007’s Grindhouse experiment between Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino was viewed as something of a misfire upon its initial release, but in the years since it’s enjoyed something of a reappraisal. Most viewers seem to have a strong opinion as to which of the two films is best, but regardless of where you land on that point there’s no denying that Rodriguez’s Planet Terror is far more attuned to the “grindhouse” aesthetic.

Where Death Proof feels like a slickly produced Tarantino film, Planet Terror is a gloriously intentional mess of jarring cuts, cheap tropes, B-movie dialogue, and crowd-pleasing beats. It’s not great cinema, but it’s a hell of a lot of fun and one of Rodriguez’s most consistently entertaining movies.

Keep reading to see what I heard on the Planet Terror commentary!

Posterized: Movies named after holidays

29 April 2016 9:30 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

With Mother's Day in theaters today starring romcom queens of yester-yore (Kate Hudson, Julia Roberts and Jennifer Aniston) the question comes to mind: What other U.S. holidays are available for Garry Marshall to make all star ensemble mosaics about?  A lot of holidays are already taken as you'll see in today's Posterized. (Disclaimer: We've opted to include only movies with theatrical releases and no holiday-themed titles -- there'd be hundreds with straight to dvd titles or movies with a holiday within the title)

How many of these movies, which take their names from holidays, have you seen?

Let's take them in order of their place on the calendar.

New Year's Day (1989), New Year's Day (2000), Groundhog Day (1993)

Ash Wednesday (1973), Valentine's Day (2010), April Fool's Day (1986)

Mother's Day (2016), Independence Day (1983), Independence Day (1996)

Labor Day (2013), Halloween (1978), Halloween (2007)

Christmas Eve (1947), Christmas Eve (2015), New Year's Eve (2011)

Detour Review [Tribeca 2016]

16 April 2016 8:00 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Writer/director Christopher Smith’s Detour has all the hallmarks of a noir thriller: law student and basically nice guy Harper (Tye Sheridan) falls into the bad company of Johnny (Emory Cohen) and his stripper girlfriend Cherry (Bel Powley) during a drunken binge at a bar. Harper’s mother is in a coma after a car accident and he believes that his stepfather Vincent (Stephen Moyer) is responsible. Seeing a chance for some quick cash, Johnny offers a deal: for $20,000 he’ll drive with Harper to Vegas and knock off Vincent. Harper agrees, but wakes up the next morning with Johnny banging on his door and has a quick change of heart. Johnny won’t take no for an answer, so off Harper goes on a road trip to either kill his stepfather, or find a way out of his predicament. But nothing, as the cliché goes, is what it seems. »

Rolling Thunder is April’s Late Nite Grindhouse

30 March 2016 11:40 AM, PDT | Destroy the Brain | See recent Destroy the Brain news »

Rolling Thunder is one of my favorite films. I’m not just saying that because it is next month’s Late Nite Grindhouse screening, it includes almost everything I loved in 70’s cinema. It is a vigilante story, a character study, a road movie and a great, justifying finale. It doesn’t hurt that it feels, at times, an echo of co-writer, Paul Schrader’s previous work, Taxi Driver (which is definitely in my top 5 of my favorite films).

The film has had a release history that was troubled. Rolling Thunder was to be released by 20th Century Fox but after it showed as a sneak 2nd feature in a double bill with the third Dirty Harry film, The Enforcer, the crowd reacted violently towards some of the studio heads in the audience. This infamous screening took place in San Jose where the majority of the crowd was latino and »

Rolling Thunder Midnights April 8th and 9th at The Moolah

30 March 2016 8:36 AM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

“You learn to love the rope. That’s how you beat ’em. That’s how you beat people who torture you. You learn to love ’em. Then they don’t know you’re beatin’ ’em.”

Rolling Thunder (1977) screens Midnights next weekend (April 8th and 9th) at The Moolah Theater and Lounge (3821 Lindell Blvd, St. Louis, Mo 63108) as part of  Destroy the Brain’s monthly Late Night Grindhouse film series.

Paul Schrader followed his Taxi Driver screenplay with the one for Rolling Thunder, a gritty revenge thriller directed by John Flynn in 1977. Similarities abound as both are about Vietnam vets who are ticking time bombs pushed to the brink by the violence they’ve come home to. But Rolling Thunder’s plot eventually veers from character study into a Death Wish-style vigilante thriller. Like Taxi Driver, it leads slowly toward a cathartic bloodbath finale. Rolling Thunder is highly regarded by fans and critics alike, »

Going against Randy Meeks’ rules for surviving a horror film, the killer in Cherry Falls (2000) seems to only target virgins. Ahead of its March 29th Blu-ray release from Scream Factory, Cherry Falls is teased in high-definition clips and a trailer.

Review: All Hell Breaks Loose

17 March 2016 12:47 PM, PDT | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

When creating exploitation movies, there’s a bit of a challenge in making them out of artistic integrity versus utilizing the genre to make generic material. When Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez joined forces to create their Grindhouse project, both talents embarked on a still divisive film experience that wasn’t as commercially successful as hoped for. Tarantino’s Death Proof dabbled in the slasher genre where the weapon of choice is a car, ultimately concluding in one of the most jaw dropping car chases in film history. Rodriguez’s Planet Terror splashed the screen with buckets of blood with a logic defying world filled with celebrity cameos trying to survive the zombie apocalypse. While I adore both pieces, some people seem to favor one over the other even though they really have nothing to do with each other (despite a subtle reference to Jungle Julia in Planet Terror). It »
