At last: a gay male comic who's actually funny!
5 June 2005 | by (Tampa, Florida) – See all my reviews

There are funny gay guys out there: Paul Rudnick, Harvey Fierstein, John Waters, et al, but Mario Cantone is the first gay stand-up comic I've seen who made me laugh out loud. Most of this adult-oriented (way too much profanity for kids to hear) live performance is brilliant, dying only when he launches into an over-extended satire on Liza Minnelli which is surprisingly lame -- he doesn't sound like her at all to me. He's better at talking about his very Italian-American family, including harridan older sister Camille (who sounds like Patty or Selma Bouvier on "The Simpsons") and their catty mother and her bizarre sense of interior decoration. Cantone is full of seemingly endless energy, bouncing his toned little bod from impersonation to impersonation without breaking a sweat. His "long-lost" Jim Morrison Christmas special is spookily accurate and he captures the essence of Judy Garland with a take on her old TV show, complete with a wickedly funny song Cantone wrote in the style of Johnny Mercer. His Julia Child and Faye Dunaway-as-Joan Crawford are just amazing, and the way he later utilizes them in a take off of Eve Ensler is hilarious! I want to see more of this guy; born in 1959, he's definitely a late-bloomer.
