Universal Pictures' The Purge stayed on well after a strong Friday opening to top the domestic box office charts with $36.3 million. The James DeMonaco horror thriller / sci-fi film starring Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey holding a mere $3 million production budget, averaged a big $14,345. This marks as a solid sophomore film in DeMonaco's career, who also wrote the film, and the second director-actor collaboration between Hawke and the helmer after Little New York (a.k.a. Staten Island). DeMonaco is an experienced scribe with work including The Negotiator, Jack and Skinwalkers. In second, also from Universal, Fast & Furious 6 starring Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson, stayed on well in its third weekend at play, grossing an estimated $19.76 million, down by 44% compared to the previous weekend. The film now passes the $200 million domestic total. »
