Though there have been numerous ties at the nominations level, this was the only year to date when there was a tie in the final voting, between Kim Basinger (LA Confidential) and Gloria Stewart (Titanic) for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture. The 1998 broadcast also featured a special clip tribute to background performers. Life Achievement Award recipient Elizabeth Taylor was a last-minute no-show due to a back injury; Gregory Peck accepted for her.
