Why Emily Blunt Chose to Play Another Assistant in 'Salmon Fishing in the Yemen'

Why Emily Blunt Chose to Play Another Assistant in 'Salmon Fishing in the Yemen'
If Emily Blunt's track record is anything to go by, the British star excels at playing assistants to eccentric bosses. She stole scenes from Anne Hathaway as assistant to Meryl Streep in “The Devil Wears Prada,” charmed as a reluctant publicist to a zany John Malkovich in “The Great Buck Howard” and took crap from Miss Piggy in “The Muppets.” In her latest film, “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen,” Blunt plays Harriet, assistant to a sheik who wants to bring salmon fishing to the desert. In the romantic comedy, directed by Lasse Hallstrom (“Chocolat”) and penned by Simon Beaufoy ("Slumdog Millionaire"), Harriet is paired with Britain’s leading fisheries expert, Fred (Ewan McGregor), to make the sheik’s dream a reality. Complications ensue when Fred, a married man, falls for Harriet. Blunt sat down with Indiewire during a short stop in Manhattan to talk about working with her co-star,

Review: 'Arbitrage' an odd mix of Richard Gere, 'Law & Order' and indie sheen
Park City - Over the past few years, there have been an increasing number of pictures that were questionable inclusions to Sundance's premieres slate.  A few them were actually good films ("The Company Men," "Smart People," "Cedar Rapids," ), but many were star-filled pseudo indies seemingly intended to satisfy sponsor attendees and the affluent contributors looking for a little bit of Hollywood during their Park City festival vacation ("The Great Buck Howard," "Brooklyn's Finest," "Motherhood," "The Butterfly Effect," "My Idiot Brother" and "The Son of No One" come to mind).  A good deal of these films would have been more appropriate at...

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked (review)

No. Just... no. I didn’t totally hate the first two Alvin and the Chipmunk movies, but even the modicum of charm and humor they managed to scare up is entirely missing here. It starts out as not so much a movie as a commercial for Carnival Cruise Lines -- which perhaps shouldn’t be a surprising turn for a strictly cash-in threequel -- as Dave Seville (Jason Lee: Cop Out) takes his three chipmunk children/musical talent clients on vacation along with their little Chipette girlfriends... except the rat triplets haven’t even hooked up yet, so should we consider Dave a pimp? And, anyway, can you bring rats on a cruise ship? Hey, actually, that could be a funny movie, if all six chipmunks got a cultural wakeup call from the shipboard rats who could tell them what life was really like down on the scavenger level. Hey,

/Film Readers: Help Colin Hanks Make The Tower Records Documentary
Some of you might know Colin Hanks as the son of actor Tom Hanks, but most of you probably know the young actor from his roles in such films as Orange County, Peter Jackson's King Kong, The Great Buck Howard, Oliver Stone's W., Band of Brothers and tv shows like Roswell and The Good Guys. I personally loved Colin's fantastic stint as Father John Gill on Mad Men and am very much looking forward to seeing him on the next season of Dexter. Recently, Colin has been working hard on an interesting documentary film, All Things Must Pass: The Rise and Fall of Tower Records. Colin hopes to raise $50,000 by July 15th to help finish production of the film. Hanks has set up a Kickstarter page [1] to do it. For your help, Colin is offering a variety of incentive gifts: starting at a mere $5 for a “Thank You” mention in the film's credits,

Colin Hanks Joins 'My Mother's Curse' With Seth Rogen & Barbra Streisand

Colin Hanks Joins 'My Mother's Curse' With Seth Rogen & Barbra Streisand
It can't be easy being the son of Tom Hanks, just ask this guy. But for Colin Hanks, he's done a pretty solid job so far of moving up the ranks of Hollywood. Sure, he teamed with Papa Hanks for "The Great Buck Howard," but no one saw that movie anyway, and he's been quietly amassing screen credits (and when he's not in meetings, he's been hitting Twitter pretty hard) featuring most prominently in "Orange County" and "King Kong." But 2011 seems to be the year we'll he'll finally start getting a much higher profile. He recently scored a prominent,…

Exclusive Teaser Trailer Debut - Cameron Romero's Radical

Following in his father George's footsteps, director Cameron Romero is a filmmaker with something to say; and in the new trailer for his latest film, Radical, that he sent exclusively our way, his message is loud and frighteningly clear.

Radical centers on the story of three members of the American press being held captive by a calculating terrorist who taunts the Us government with his arrogance and technological savvy.

The isolation piece stars Tom Sizemore (Saving Private Ryan, Heat), Ford Austin (Dahmer vs. Gacy, The Auctioneers), Josh Carmichael, Shahe Assilian and Bj Hendricks (The Great Buck Howard, Staunton Hill) and marks a reunion for many cast members who have worked with Romero in the past.

"This is the real horror that people go through every day around the world, and the media always seem to cover it from a higher place or a conceptual level," Romero told us. "I think

‘Adjustment Bureau’ and ‘Rango’ Win Box Office

By Scott Mendelson

HollywoodNews.com: Paramount released its first non-Dreamworks cartoon in nearly five years this weekend. And indeed, the number one film by a long shot was Gore Verbinski’s Rango (teaser). The critically-acclaimed and nearly-existential Johnny Depp vehicle grossed $38 million over the three-day weekend. That’s the biggest opening for a Paramount animated feature not from Dreamworks, although it’s slightly behind in attendance compared to the $32 million opening of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie back in November of 2004. Paramount’s animated fare has been exclusively Dreamworks since the August 2006 release of Barnyard: The Original Party Animals. Since they acquired Dreamworks in early 2006, they’ve basically been just releasing the Katzenberg cartoons. But prior to that, they actually had a good thing going with Nickelodeon, although they have released a few Nickelodeon live-action co-ventures over the last few years (Charlotte’s Web, Hotel For Dogs, etc). This will hopefully

Great Buck Howard Director McGinly Telling Story Of Legendary Bank Robber

Sean McGinly's feature directing debut The Great Buck Howard was about a man a bit past his prime in his chosen profession (magic) but still doggedly pursuing his trade. For his next act, McGinly will be telling a similar story, just with a bit of grand larceny thrown in. According to Variety he'll be adapting and directing The Old Man and the Gun, based on the New Yorker article about a bank robber who kept his career going until he was nearly 80. An archived version of the article is available here, and it starts with a captivating description of Forrest Tucker's last bank robbery, for which he dressed in all white and after which he thanked the tellers for handing over more than $5,000. Tucker said of his life story, "I've been in prison all my life, except for the times I've broken out," and walks around with shrapnel

Bradley Cooper Turns Down Shyamalan, Offered Reynolds-less ‘Tmi’

Though the actor still be a hot commodity and someone to watch, he’s watching himself more closely these days, thanks to the underwhelming numbers behind The A-Team. What should’ve been a lauching pad for Bradley Cooper is now a cautionary tale, and it seems M. Night Shyamalan’s secret super-powers project will suffer a loss.

Cooper has dropped out of the Last Airbender director’s next film due to apparent shooting conflicts with The Hangover 2. On the flip side of this, Cooper has been offered the lead against Anna Faris in Tmi, a rom-com about two friends who, after a “crazy night,” realize they may be more than friends. Original, yes it is. [Pajiba]

Ryan Reynolds was set to star in the film, which most likely is no longer the case if Cooper’s getting offered the film. Reynolds made that movie already. It was called Just Friends
