A celebration of Summer Glau

23 November 2011 3:17 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

The star of Serenity, Firefly and numerous other genre films and shows, Summer Glau seldom gets the attention she deserves. Here’s Caroline’s celebration of her work...

We all know that Joss Whedon has a knack for discovering actresses with that incommunicable ability to convey great strength and resilience, from Sarah Michelle Gellar’s genre-altering Buffy Summers, to the various roles he provides for Eliza Dushku or Amy Acker.

With Summer Glau, though, he found something truly special, and that’s a sentiment shared by anyone who’s ever seen her on-screen. Making her move into internet television with The Human Preservation Project, it’s mighty revealing to look at her slow, yet meteoric in retrospect, rise to becoming the geek-favourite and enigmatic performer we know and love today.

Sure, she can act most of her co-stars off the screen when required, but she does so with a grace »

House Exclusive: The Unit's Audrey Marie Anderson to Play Wife to David Anders' Potw

10 November 2011 8:41 AM, PST | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

David Anders won’t be alone when he checks into House this winter.

Audrey Marie Anderson — best known as the loyal spouse of Scott Foley’s solider on CBS’ The Unit — will play the wife of Anders’ Patient of the Week in a pivotal, early ’12 episode.

The anticipated hour — written by Garrett Lerner, Russel Friend and David Foster and directed by exec producer Greg Yaitanes (the same creative team behind Season 4’s Emmy winning “House’s Head” episode) — centers on House’s unorthodox process being put on (metaphorical) trial by special guest star Jeffrey Wright.

Awake Takes a Break; Check Out a Clip From the (Hopefully) Midseason Series

27 October 2011 4:00 AM, PDT | ScifiMafia | See recent ScifiMafia news »

When the big three networks started releasing clips of their fall 2011 shows, one of the most intriguing was the one for Awake, starring Jason Isaacs (The Harry Potter movies, Brotherhood). We were disappointed that we had to wait until mid-season for the show to premiere, but we were hoping it would be worth the wait.

Now, NYMag reports that Awake is taking a little break:

Vulture has learned that Awake is going to temporarily shut down production this week after filming six episodes (including its pilot). The hiatus is scheduled to last about four weeks; after that, filming is scheduled to resume, with the series still being targeted for an early 2012 debut. So is this a good thing or bad thing for Awake? We got in touch with Awake showrunner (and 24 vet) Howard Gordon for answers.

Gordon told us that he and Killen asked producer 20th Century Fox TV and »

Tonight on Criminal Minds: 7.03 "Dorado Falls"

5 October 2011 5:40 AM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

The Bau team head to Charlottesville, Virginia tonight to investigate a mass murder at an Internet-security company. They find that the clues lead them to a suspect who is not a typical serial killer. In the sneak peek for "Dorado Falls" that can be seen below, Emily (Paget Brewster) has to complete recertification training with a familiar face as her trainer. Warning light spoilers ahead.

So what is it about this unsub that makes him different from a typical serial killer? It would appear that Navy Veteran Luke Dolan (guest star Max MartiniRevenge, The Unit) may be suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder which not only results in him killing his own parents but believing that he is on some kind of bigger mission. This sounds somewhat reminiscent of the season 2 episode "Distress" which featured a Veteran who also suffered from Ptsd from his time in Somalia, and who »

The Benshi From Hell: Val Kilmer’s Musings on "Spartan"

13 September 2011 5:29 AM, PDT | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

Spartan (David Mamet, 2004) was quite near the beginning of the artistic sequence that Mamet scholars would eventually call his "early crypto-fascist period"—certainly a good dozen years before his bizarre, Kaufmanesque wrestling matches with Tariq Ramadan, complete with veiled ringside girls, on Al-Jazeera. About the film itself, critics were brutal. One of them called it "unimaginably crude – the Pickup on South Street (1) of the so-called War on Terror." Another said, "watching this film makes me want to commit innocent but suspicious acts deserving of a good waterboarding in Guantanamo." Despite the down-beat & cryptic patriotism of the film, it was not a success. Warner Brothers, sifting through the testing data, eventually fingered its too mild anti-Arabian racism. Mamet was forced to move the idea to television where he re-conceived the material for the series The Unit, primarily, the cynics said, as a way to get singing gigs for his wife, Scottish folkstress Rebecca Pidgeon. »

The Good Wife casting carousal is spinning quickly these days.

With Parker Posey, Harvey Fierstein and Michael Arden all signed on for season three roles, we can now confirm that yet another House star is following Lisa Edelstein to the CBS smash. But just for one episode.

Peter Jacobson will guest star on the September 25 premiere, portraying someone tangled up in the trial of a Muslim student accused of murdering a Jewish classmate.

Meanwhile, it looks like Diane will be moving past Kurt McVeigh. The Vulture blog reports that Bill Heck (The Unit, Without a Trace) will recur as a young legal aid who takes a liking to this liberal senior partner. »

'The Shield' showrunner sells crime pilot to CBS

Shawn Ryan has lined up a new crime drama project with a fringe science twist.

The showrunner behind FX’s The Shield and Fox’s Chicago Code is teaming with Criminal Minds writer-producer Simon Mirren for a new CBS pilot. The pitch: A geneticist uses his newfound discovery that he has the “psychopath gene” to help the FBI catch killers.

'Strike Back' is an Explosive New Series that Brings the Glory of '24' & 'The Unit' with 'Bourne' Film Style

12 August 2011 11:26 AM, PDT | BuzzFocus.com | See recent BuzzFocus.com news »

This summer’s hot blockbuster action movie has finally arrived. However, instead of catching this film in theaters you can catch it on Cinemax. And, by the way, it’s an original TV series and not a movie. Cinemax’s new series Strike Back is an explosive action drama that harkens back to the days of 24 and The Unit. Instead of Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) saving the world in 24 hours or a group of soldiers under the leadership of Snake Doc (Dennis Haysbert) attacking the mission of the week, this series focuses on a secret British Military Intelligence Unit called Section 20. This show is about hunting down terrorists, keeping the world safe, and giving viewers an hour each week of adrenaline. There’s also a touch of conspiracy shrouding Section 20. The series uses familiar archetypes. Camelot’s Philip Winchester stars as Stonebridge, the clean-cut soldier who likes to stick to the rules. »

Robert Kazinksy & Willem Dafoe Circle del Toro’s ‘Pacific Rim’

29 July 2011 9:16 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

At Legendary Pictures’ Comic-Con Panel this past weekend, Guillermo del Toro offered a simple reason for why people should be excited about his new project, Pacific Rim – as he eloquently put it, because the film is about “giant f**king monsters against giant f**king robots.”

Pacific Rim also boasts a rising star in the form of Charlie Hunnam, fan-favorite Idris Elba, popular comedic type Charlie Day, and Oscar-nominee Rinko Kikuchi as members of its cast.

Variety has learned that Robert Kazinksy (EastEnders, Red Tails) is also now officially onboard for del Toro’s giant alien invasion thriller. Oscar-nominee Willem Dafoe is also said to be circling the project, which recently added character actor Max Martini (The Unit, ...

Robert Patrick Replaces Bryan Cranston As Texan Law Enforcement In 'Gangster Squad'

Trying to replace Bryan Cranston is kind of a no-win situation but Robert Patrick? Sure, we can dig that. The actor--best known as the killing machine T-1000 in "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" or perhaps most recently for his stint on "The Unit"--steps into the role of Max Kennard, a Texas transplant to the Lapd with his own brand of justice. In case you've somehow been asleep or away from movie news for the past little while, the film is based on a series of articles in the L.A. Casting Bits: Jason Bateman in ‘We’re the Millers’, Max Martini in ‘Pacific Rim’, Rebel Wilson in ‘Struck by Lightning’

26 July 2011 1:30 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

[1] Jason Bateman has won the lead role in We're the Millers, a stoner comedy to be directed by Rawson Thurber. The two worked together previously on 2004's Dodgeball, which featured Bateman as spacey color commentator Pepper Brooks. Bateman and Thurber are just the latest names to board the film, which has been in development for nearly a decade -- John Morris, Sean Anders, Steve Buscemi and Bateman's Arrested Development co-star Will Arnett have all been attached to the project at various points. Bateman seems to be on a hot streak with comedies right now, though, so here's hoping the project actually gets made this time around. The script follows a drug dealer who decides he wants out of the business. But before he quits, of course, he has to take one last job which involves traveling to Mexico and creating a fake family in order to smuggle 1,400 pounds of marijuana back into the U. »

Max Martini Will Battle Monsters for Guillermo Del Toro

26 July 2011 8:52 AM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Variety says you can add “The Unit’s” Max Martini to the growing cast of Guillermo del Toro’s “Pacific Rim”, a film that isn’t scheduled to hit until 2013, but apparently that hasn’t stopped Legendary Pictures and del Toro from already making huge promises about what they have in store. Hey, I’m hoping it all works out, because I’ve been dying to get my eyeballs on another mecha fighting movie ever since the genius that is “Robot Jox”. Yes, you heard me. “Robot Jox”. Now just add monsters. That appears to be the premise being “Pacific Rim”. In the film, Martini will play another monster fighter for del Toro. I suspect that will involve Martini running around with a Bfg shooting things. He should be good at that, since he’s spent what, five years doing just that on “The Unit”.
