‘Whiplash’ Producer Bold Films Developing Superhero Movie ‘Samaritan’

Bold Films, which produced “Nightcrawler” and “Whiplash,” is developing the superhero project “Samaritan,” written by Bragi F. Schut.

Bold has come on board to produce and finance “Samaritan” with Bold chairman Michael Litvak and senior VP Jonathan Oakes as the producers. CEO Gary Michael Walters will executive produce.

“Samaritan” takes place 20 years after an epic battle between a super villain and a superhero left the villain dead and the hero missing. The story is centered on a young boy befriending an old man who he believes is the superhero in hiding.

Bold is in pre-production on “Stronger,” starring Jake Gyllenhaal and based on the hunt for the 2013 Boston Marathon bombers. The company came on board last month to produce and finance the project, based on the book by bombing survivor Jeff Bauman, who lost both legs in the attack.

Games of Thrones has made Peter Dinklage a household name in the movie/TV geek community. Yet, in reality, the Golden Globe-winning actor – responsible for bringing sharp-witted Tyrion Lannister to life on the HBO fantasy series – has been making a name for himself for more than a decade now, between leading turns in indie fare like The Station Agent and scene-stealing appearances in films like Elf and both versions of Death at a Funeral (not to mention, his previous memorable supporting roles on TV shows like Threshold and Nip/Tuck).

Paramount has acquired a comedy vehicle with Dinklage attached to star, as will be produced by Disruption Entertainment’s Cale Boyter and Mary Parent (Role Models). The ...

Denette Wilford: 'Political Animals' Is A Frothy Beast
I've previously stated that I'm more of a network TV kind of girl than a cable fan. I know it's not the "popular" or "sophisticated" thing to admit, but sometimes I prefer to be lightly entertained without getting too inside my head. Yes, I'm basically slamming network television as light and fluffy, while at the same time revealing I'm a bit of a wimp when it comes to all things gritty, but that's just how I'm programmed.

But if there was one cabler I'd kill to have access to, it would be USA Network (thankfully Bravo here in Canada picks up a lot of its shows). I find USA boasts the best of both worlds, a channel that can entertain without taking itself too seriously (see "White Collar," "Suits," "Covert Affairs," "Fairly Legal"). So I was a tad wary when I learned Sigourney Weaver was headlining a political drama centring

'Political Animals': Sigourney Weaver and Carla Gugino shake up Washington politics

The makers of a new miniseries, including one of the year's most impressive television casts, have America's political parties to thank for it coming together so fast.

Executive producer Greg Berlanti ("Brothers & Sisters") admits this being an election year was a huge factor in his rapid development -- and USA Network's quick purchase -- of "Political Animals," which begins a weekly run Sunday, July 15. The drama boasts a rare home-screen appearance by Sigourney Weaver as a maritally troubled former first lady and failed presidential candidate who becomes secretary of state.

If that sounds somewhat familiar, let it be noted the character is fictional, indicated by her demand for a divorce from her ex-president husband (Ciaran Hinds) early in the premiere episode. However, his charisma and connections keep him useful to her in matters of international diplomacy ... again, fiction in this case.

The secretary also has a problem in a

‘Man of Steel’ Co-Writer David S. Goyer Conjures ‘Da Vinci’s Demons’

David S. Goyer, the prolific screenwriter behind some of the most successful comic book-based movies made in the past fifteen years (including Batman Begins, the Blade movies, and the upcoming Superman film, Man of Steel), is hoping his big-screen success finally translates to the small screen. After nurturing such short-lived television series as Flash Forward, Threshold, Blade (based on the three-film franchise he wrote, the third and final one he also directed), and FreakyLinks, Goyer is returning to the cathode realm with his latest creation, a new series entitled Da Vinci's Demons. The show will be the first to be produced under a new multi-year agreement Starz Entertainment signed with BBC Worldwide Productions over the summer [...]

Starz Orders to Series Dark Knight Scribe David S. Goyer's Fantastical Spin on Da Vinci
Starz has ordered to series Da Vinci’s Demons, an adventure/historical fantasy piece written by David S. Goyer, the co-writer of Batman Begins/The Dark Knight and writer of the upcoming Man of Steel.

Previewing his plan for Leonardo, Goyer said in a statement, “Da Vinci was the original Renaissance man — a near-mythic figure that has worldwide appeal. After working with characters like Batman and Superman, it made a strange kind of sense for me to dive into the facts and legends swirling around his origins.

“This will be a show about secret histories, genius, madness, and all things profane,

Jason O’Mara Interviews Brannon Braga for Impromptu Interview #2

Jason O’Mara just updated his “Impromptu Interviews” on his website; the second in the installment of this short interview series with fellow celebs and films execs, and the victim…er, subject, is Brannon Braga. Here’s the video, you should watch it–it’s funny, even at only 45 seconds or so.

Click here to view the embedded video.

For those of you who have been living under a rock lately, Brannon Braga is one of the executive producers and writers behind Terra Nova. Prior to his work on this show, he was most well-known for his contributions to three out of the four most recent Star Trek shows (he was one of the creators of Enterprise), two of the movies, and the unfortunately short-lived TV show, Threshold.

Jason ambushed the hapless Braga on his way to an elevator, it appears. He asked the producer the standard “Impromptu Interview Questions

100 Bullets to Be Developed by David Goyer and Showtime

Comics and screenplay writer David Goyer is said to be working with Showtime in developing the Eisner and Harvey Award-winning 100 Bullets comic series into a tv series. According to Deadline:

While lauded as one of the best comic books/graphic novels of the past decade 100 Bullets … is a dark, noir-style story about the attempt by one man, the mysterious Agent Graves, to destroy a secret group of families that control most of the world’s wealth and power, and it also poses a classic moral question, “If you could get away with murdering the person who ruined your life, would you do it?” The book’s starting-off point is Graves giving ordinary people who have been wronged a pistol and a briefcase with 100 untraceable bullets, offering them to exact

New Casting Directors

Lisa Soltau was living in Seattle when her friend Bonnie Gillespie sent her a book she had written called "Casting Qs," a compilation of interviews with casting directors. "I read it and I absolutely loved all the aspects of the job," says Soltau. "I loved the entertainment industry and movies and television. The process of casting sounded wonderful."She called one of the two casting offices in Seattle and ended up working as an intern there for about six months. But the CD told her she should move to New York or Los Angeles if she really wanted to pursue a career in casting. "I picked L.A. because I had lived there once for about three years and I thought it would be easier to acclimate there," Soltau says. "Plus I wanted to work on 'Six Feet Under,' which was airing at the time.
