Pilot Spotlight: Inside 'Hysteria'

11 September 2014 12:38 AM, PDT | Hollywonk | See recent Hollywonk news »

A group of teens in a small Texas town suffer from unexplained seizures, which begin to spread to the wider population.  A neurologist (played by Mena Suvari) returns home to investigate the medical mystery, only to suspect that the affliction is being spread through social media.

If it sounds far-fetched, even Mashable warns that the pilot “will make you incredibly paranoid.”

In this behind-the-scenes video, show creator Shaun Cassidy (Invasion) and Suvari explain what inspired them to make Hysteria, a drama that “combines the contagion thriller with the Internet paranoia thriller,” according to the New York Times.

Will it make you step away from Facebook?  See for yourself by watching the pilot. »

Hysteria, Ep. 1.01: “Pilot” predicts an un-engaging series

Hysteria, Season 1, Episode 1: “Pilot”

Written by Shaun Cassidy

Directed by Otto Bathurst

Released August 28, 2014 by Amazon

A veteran of television writing, and known mostly for having created the ABC science fiction drama Invasion, Shaun Cassidy’s next foray to the small screen comes courtesy of Amazon. Titled Hysteria, the series follows a medical investigator in Austin as she attempts to understand the cause behind a series of seizures and spasmic movements affecting a group of largely unrelated individuals. With Mena Suvari in the lead role, Amazon and the creators have released the pilot online in an attempt to get a series greenlight. Unfortunately, poor characterisation and a simplistic mystery at its core dooms this pilot by seemingly promising a dull show.

One of the key problems with this pilot, and potentially with the series as a whole, is that the central »

The HeyUGuys Instant Watching Guide – September 1st 2014

1 September 2014 3:30 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Believe it or not, films and television programmes added to Netflix and Amazon do have a tendency to expire and no longer be there after a while; this isn’t as publicised as when the titles in question are added though. So by the time you read this there are around 50 titles disappearing from Netflix.

If you have ever wanted to watch the 2002 version of The Count of Monte Cristo then you have probably missed your chance by now. What this does mean however is that probably next week Netflix will have added a whole raft of new stuff, I say new but it will probably be a mixture of catalogue and stuff from the last year. I know that the underrated Enders Game and the superior Hunger Games: Catching Fire is due there in September, I just don’t know when.

Time to Help Choose the Next Series: 5 New Pilots Premiere August 28th

11 August 2014 10:18 AM, PDT | Hollywonk | See recent Hollywonk news »

Big news today: We’re excited to announce Amazon Studios’ third pilot season, beginning August 28th and featuring three half hour comedies The Cosmopolitans, Really and Red Oaks, and two hour-long dramatic thrillers Hand of God and Hysteria.  For one month, it will be up to you to watch, rate and comment – ultimately helping us decide which of them get the greenlight.

“There is something for everyone in this season,” says Roy Price, Director of Amazon Studios.  The glamorous life of modern day expats in Paris. The hijinks of a summer job at a country club in 1980s New Jersey. The visions of a vigilante judge who appears to be channeling God.  The complexities of marriage and friendship among a circle of friends in suburban Chicago.  And the mysteries behind a psycho-physiological illness spreading through a small town in Texas.

You can help choose which of these stories should get “picked up” to become shows. »

Ten Best: Episodes of ‘Supernatural’

The road so far …

It wasn’t exactly easy for genre television in 2005. Well, it’s really never been easy for genre television ever in the history of television, but in 2005, a deluge of genre shows premiered and almost all of them had fallen prey to the swift axe of the television gods by the next year. Start by thinking about television now. It’s a fruitful time for horror and science fiction and fantasy. There are a multitude of genre shows, running the gamut from The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, to True Blood and The Vampire Diaries. They’re all massive hits.

Now, think of all of the shows that premiered around that time in 2005. There was Surface, and that was cancelled after ten episodes by NBC. Invasion, a well-regarded show written by Shaun Cassidy (who created one of my favorite shows, American Gothic) and that was cancelled »

‘Blue Jasmine,’ ‘Hunger Games’ Among Costume Design Winners

Elaborate designs and covetable fashion were the focuses of the 2014 Costume Designers Guild Awards on February 22 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, where winners included “Behind the Candelabra’s” Ellen Mirojnick, “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’s” Trish Summerville, “House of Cards’” Tom Broecker, and “Blue Jasmine’s” Suzy Benzinger.

This is all a little ironic, Cdg president Salvador Perez joked his opening remarks.

“As costume designers, we take on the formidable task of dressing thousands of actors for a crowd scene or giving an actor 30 changes for one 30-minute episode of television,” the “Mindy Project” costume designer said. “Even though we can pull it off on a daily basis, let’s be honest. When it comes to dressing ourselves, the shoemakers’ children have no shoes. My tuxedo hem? Safety pins and Topstick.”

Grimm’s geekiest guest stars

From Amy Acker to James Frain, we celebrate Grimm’s habit of filling its supporting cast with geek favourites…

Read our look-back at the careers of Grimm co-creators David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf, here.

When Grimm’s makers were looking for their Nick Burkhardt, the job was to cast someone with all the requirements of a leading man, but none of the distracting ‘wasn’t he in that other thing?’ baggage. In David Giuntoli, whose TV appearances had until then largely been confined to one-off roles in comedies and dramas including Grey’s Anatomy and Ghost Whisperer (the latter produced, not at all coincidentally, by Grimm co-creator Jim Kouf), they found their guy.

With Giuntoli in place, and a solid cast of regulars around him including Silas Weir Mitchell, Sasha Roiz, Russell Hornsby, Reggie Lee and Claire Coffee, it was time to fill in the guest roles. »

Amazon Orders Dramedy Pilot ‘Cocked’

6 February 2014 9:43 AM, PST | Deadline TV | See recent Deadline TV news »

As Amazon Studios is releasing its current crop of 10 pilots today, the company already is working on the next batch. I’ve learned that Amazon has greenlighted hourlong dramedy pilot Cocked, from Lie To Me creator Samuel Baum. Written by Baum and Sam Shaw, the project centers on an estranged son who must return to work with his father and brother at his family’s gun manufacturing company after a corporate rival, run by their uncle, moves to take them over. Cocked joins three other pilots recently greenlighted by Amazon Studios: drama Hand Of God, written by Ben Watkins, directed by Marc Forster and starring Ron Perlman; comedy Cosmopolitan from The Last Days Of Disco filmmaker Whit Stillman; and drama Hysteria from Invasion creator Shaun Cassidy. Amazon Close to Closing Deal on Pilots From Whit Stillman, Marc Forster

Following in the digital footsteps of Netflix, Hulu and a growing list of others, Amazon Studios is close to moving forward with three new pilots for original series, according to Deadline. One is a comedy from acclaimed film director Whit Stillman ("Metropolitan," "Damsels in Distress") called "Cosmopolitan" and the other two are dramas -- "Hysteria," from television producer and former teen idol Shaun Cassidy ("Invasion"), and "Hand of God," which is to be directed by Marc Forster ("World War Z") in his TV directing debut. Stillman will direct, write and executive produce "Cosmopolitan," which Deadline describes as a love story between a clique of expatriates living in Paris. "Hysteria" has a sci-fi premise and follows a female doctor who returns to her hometown in Texas to investigate an apparently technologically generated plague that is afflicting high school girls. Happy birthday, Evan Peters: The sexiest, most intense GIFs of the 'American Horror Story' star

20 January 2014 5:00 AM, PST | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

Evan Peters was a relative unknown before "American Horror Story" came along. He had done a handful of "One Tree Hill" episodes and was part of the short-lived ABC series "Invasion," but he really burst onto the scene in 2011 as Jessica Lange's on-screen son Tate Langdon on the FX horror drama.

On Monday (Jan. 20), we'd like to wish him a very happy 26th birthday and celebrate with his sexiest, most intense GIFs.

We also have our fingers crossed to see Peters in Season 4 of "American Horror Story," the details of which are starting to trickle out. He recently told io9 that the show's anthology format, changing characters, settings and time periods every season, is one of the things he likes the most about it.

"It's amazing, you get to see a different side of each [actor]," says Peters. "When you're acting with them, you see them change into somebody else »
