Walking Dead Season 5 Teasers and EW Magazine Covers

27 August 2014 2:33 PM, PDT | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

The Season 5 premiere of The Walking Dead is still over a month away, but that didn’t stop the onslaught of Walking Dead news today. We have two teasers for the show, four Entertainment Weekly covers featuring the cast, some casting news, and our first look at Father Gabriel Stokes, a character from the comics being brought to life by The Wire’s Seth Gilliam.

The four awesome-looking EW covers feature Norman Reedus, Danai Gurira, Andrew Lincoln, and Steven Yeun and Lauren Cohan. They're all in the kind of sequence shots usually only seen in skate and surf magazines. I think if you look closely at the Reedus cover, he’s doing a nollie half-cab. If you look too closely at the Lincoln cover you’ll get punched in the face.

The teaser videos are called “Family” and “Close on Tyreese.” “Family” features Rick laying down down a very important »

Amusing Full Trailer for the Comedy Dear White People

22 July 2014 11:15 AM, PDT | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

A full trailer has been released for writer and director Justin Simien's Sundance hit, Dear White People. I've heard a lot of fantastic things about this movie, which is a comedic satire about race relations in modern America. I really like the humor that I'm seeing in the trailer, and this looks like a really entertaining movie worth checking out.  Here's a synopsis for the movie:

Winner of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival’s Special Jury Award for Breakthrough Talent, Dear White People is a sly, provocative satire of race relations in the age of Obama. Writer/director Justin Simien follows a group of African American students as they navigate campus life and racial politics at a predominantly white college in a sharp and funny feature film debut that earned him a spot on Variety’s annual “10 Directors to Watch.”

Briefs: “Gotham”‘s Young Baddies, Enda’s Nightmare Scenario, And Did Ricky Martin Mentor Ian Thorpe’s Coming Out?

Birthday shoutouts go to Mark Indelicato (above), who is 20, Will Ferrell is 47, Tony Kushner is 58, and a happy belated birthday to Tbl reader Kyle

Billy Eichner to write first book, “an as-yet-untitled comedic take on Hollywood and pop culture.”

Did Ricky Martin mentor Ian Thorpe about coming out?

Tony Goldwyn Was Advised Against Playing A Gay Role, But Said ‘Screw You.’ Of course, we all remember his first gay role, in Designing Women

Enda: The Nightmare Scenario in Which GOPers Push a Bad Bill That Gay Groups Dropped

Here’s the new teaser for Gotham, which features a lot of familiar characters.

Yesterday it was “Word Crimes,” and here’s Weird Al enlisting Aisha Tyler, Margaret Cho, Eric Stonestreet, Kristen Schaal and Jack Black in “Tacky.” Personally, I don’t find any of these examples tacky.

What are Top 10 Emmy contenders for Best Single-Camera Series Cinematography?

7 July 2014 8:44 AM, PDT | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

The TV academy has a history of nominating single camera shows that get very little Emmy love elsewhere, from Upn's "Everybody Hates Chris" in 2006 to ABC's "Pan Am" in 2012 -- for their cinematography. However, last year's lineup mirrored Best Drama Series, and this year's is likely to do the same. The nominees last year were:  -Break- "Boardwalk Empire" (season 3 - fifth nomination, 2011, 2012 winner) "Breaking Bad" (season 5.1 - fifth nomination) "Game of Thrones" (season 3 - first nomination) "Homeland" (season 2 - first nomination) "House of Cards" (season 1 - first nomination, 2013 winner) "Mad Men" (season 6 - fifth nomination, 2008 winner) Top 10 Emmy contenders for Multi-Camera Series Cinematography "Breaking Bad" has been nominated every season, but was curiously never up for the equivalent award given out by »

Funny Trailer for Dear White People

20 June 2014 9:30 AM, PDT | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Dear White People was a hit at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to see, but I've been hearing nothing but great things. The movie is a comedic satire about race relations in modern America, and it was written and directed by Justin Simien. As you'll see in the trailer, he's willing take on sensitive topics and bring some humor to it.

Fox Intl. Prods. Inks Pact With Mexican Producer Cisneros (Exclusive)

19 June 2014 6:32 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Fox Intl. Prods. has inked a two-picture pact with Mexican producer-scribe Eduardo Cisneros in a bid to further expand its commitment to Latin American and Mexican cinema.

“(Mexican filmmaking) presents the most exciting opportunity because of its crossover potential,” said Fip prexy Sanford Panitch.

Cisneros worked in close collaboration with helmer-thesp Eugenio Derbez to co-develop, produce and pen Spanish-language box office hit “Instructions Not Included,” a Pantelion Films/Lionsgate release that grossed a record-busting $44.5 million in the U.S.

Cisneros, who has been part of Derbez’s production team for more than a decade, has recently set up base in Los Angeles although he’ll be shuttling between Mexico and the U.S., as will Derbez.

While this is the first time that Fip has inked a deal with a Mexican scribe, it recently struck a five-pic deal with Mexican helmer Gaz Alazraki, whose directorial debut “Nosotros los Nobles” was »

Dear White People Trailer Takes The Butler, The Help, and Gremlins Down a Peg or Two

Writer-director Justin Simien has earned quite a few accolades from the film festival circuit for his feature directorial debut Dear White People, including Sundance's Special Jury Prize for Breakthrough Talent.  Now that the film's trailer is online, you can see for yourself what all the fuss is about.  The provocative and satirical take on modern-day race relations follows a group of African-American students attending a predominantly white Ivy League school.  I should probably mention that it's at least in part a tongue-in-cheek comedy, so we're not talking Higher Learning-level drama here. Starring Tyler James Williams, Tessa Thompson, Teyonah Parris, Brandon P. Bell, Kyle Gallner, Malcolm Barrett, Brittany Curran, Marque Richardson, and Dennis HaysbertDear White People opens October 17th in limited release.  Hit the jump to watch the Dear White People trailer. Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore Become ‘Blended’ in New Romantic Comedy

23 May 2014 5:00 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Usually after a date goes wrong the couple go their separate ways with the avowed intention of never seeing each other again. But according to the new Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore comedy it seems such people are missing a trick, as you can use it as a springboard to get a whole bunch of free stuff. Posing as a happy man and wife in order to qualify for a holiday at a luxury resort, it isn’t long before the chemistry starts to flow and the former car crash daters fall in love for real without the need for pina coladas or the act of getting caught in the rain. This is the premise for Blended, the pair’s third movie together and the first to reunite them with the director who started their onscreen partnership in The Wedding Singer back in 1998, Frank Coraci.

Sundance’s Newest Satirical Darling Will Be in a Theater Near You

20 March 2014 9:00 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

The Sundance Film Festival may serve as a solid proving ground for wrenching dramas about to break into the big time – think Winter’s Bone, Beasts of the Southern Wild, or Fruitvale, and that’s just top-of-head, recent memory stuff – but the January fest also provides a venue for some very funny comedies with big star power and fresh ideas to bolster them. Sure, it’s easy to find plenty of tearjerkers in the festival’s stacked program, but lots of comedic talents also bring some lighter fare to the festival each year. Yet, that doesn’t always mean that what makes audiences giggle in Park City will translate to a mainstream crowd some months down the road – so here’s hoping that the latest satirical comedy hit from this year’s Sundance will win over bigger crowds when it hits theaters later this year. This year’s Special Jury Award winner for Breakthrough Talent, Justin Simien »
