Pixar’s ‘Coco’ Tops Wimpy ‘Justice League’ at Thanksgiving Box Office

Pixar’s ‘Coco’ Tops Wimpy ‘Justice League’ at Thanksgiving Box Office
Coco” (Disney/Pixar) outgrossed by a wide margin the second weekend of DC’s “Justice League” over the five-day Thanksgiving weekend. Their robust numbers were buttressed by strong holds for several other films, led by the second weekend of “Wonder” (Lionsgate) along with other holdovers that showed surprising signs of renewed life.

The holiday weekend was about three per cent ahead of a year ago, a welcome increase looking forward to the lucrative Christmas period. That’s positive, though it marks a minimally acceptable performance given two films at the top with a combined budget of a half-billion dollars.

Pixar’s “Coco” fell short of other recent animated Thanksgiving holiday releases (including “Moana” last year and “Frozen” in 2013), but its $71-million five-day total combined with an A+ Cinemascore (only the fifth this year, and third since January) suggests a shot at a total gross of $275 million or higher with strong play through Christmas.

‘Wonder’ Review: Jacob Tremblay Faces Middle School In this Emotionally Generous Family Drama

‘Wonder’ Review: Jacob Tremblay Faces Middle School In this Emotionally Generous Family Drama
Wonder” is as manipulative as movies get, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes a story needs to steer you; sometimes a story tells you what to feel, but redeems itself by virtue of the sincerity with which it shows why you should feel that way. In much the same way that fables and fairy tales exist to making a particular point, subtlety would be counterintuitive to the very nature of what this film is trying to do. And really, no one should be expecting Chekhov from an inspirational tear-jerker about a deformed little kid whose parents are played by Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson.

As generous as it is linear (and only emotionally pornographic towards the end), “Wonder” may be manipulative, but it’s also instructive. It’s a how-to guide for kindness — a good lesson for kids, and a helpful reminder for adults. It’s not

‘Daddy’s Home 2’ Review: Mel Gibson Proves to Be One Daddy Too Many in Queasy Holiday Comedy
Daddy’s Home 2” isn’t sorry. It doesn’t care about your stupid feelings. Don’t remember what happened at the end of the last movie, or which home belongs to which daddy? Too bad. Don’t want your festive family comedies to star Mel Gibson as a serial womanizer with a flair for violence? Well, “The Man Who Invented Christmas” isn’t out until next week, so you’re shit out of luck. Don’t understand how Will Ferrell could re-team with Mark Wahlberg when a sequel to “Step Brothers” is possibly the only thing that could pull civilization back from the brink? Get in line.

A follow-up to one of Sofia Coppola’s favorite movies of all time, “Daddy’s Home 2” literally ends with its characters snowbound in a multiplex and forced to watch some limp Hollywood garbage because they don’t have anything better to do. In a better world,

The bar for unlikely father-son pairings on TV has been raised: Josh Groban has been cast as Tony Danza’s offspring in Netflix’s 10-episode dramedy The Good Cop, TVLine has learned.

This “odd couple” become unofficial partners as Tony Sr. offers his overly-cautious son blunt, street-wise advice on everything from handling suspects to handling women.

Although known mostly as a singer, Groban has been beefing up his acting resume

Diablo Cody and Emily Silver Collaborating on New Cop Drama for Fox

Cody: truTV/YouTube

Just over a week ago Diablo Cody signed an overall deal with Warner Bros. Television, and now comes word that the Oscar winner has a new project in the works at Fox. Variety reports that the “Juno” screenwriter is executive producing “Two Nights,” a cop drama penned by “Finding Carter” co-creator Emily Silver, who will also serve as an Ep.

Fox has ordered a script for the series, which centers on Sunday Night, a former cop with memorable name and a smartass sense of humor “who lives on a shrinking island with her pet squirrel and not much else,” the source summarizes. “But when her foster father asks for help in the kidnapping case of a young girl, Sunday is pulled back into the world of law enforcement, forcing her to confront her own demons as she solves cases for the Criminal Investigative Division of the FBI.”

Cody created Showtime’s Toni Collette-starrer “United States of Tara” and co-created Tig Notaro’s semi-autobiographical Amazon series “One Mississippi.” The former aired from 2009–2011, and the sophomore season of the latter series dropped earlier this month. Cody’s feature writing credits include “Ricki and the Flash,” “Young Adult,” and “Jennifer’s Body.” She made her directorial debut with 2013’s “Paradise.”

Best known for co-creating MTV teen drama “Finding Carter,” Silver’s other credits include writing and producing on “The Flash” and “Bones.”

“Not to burst any bubbles, but this business is brutal,” Silver has warned aspiring TV writers. “Especially for the early stages of someone’s career. I started as an assistant, and while it’s not the only path to being a writer, it’s the one I would recommend for young people just starting out.”

Chief among her own inspirations is “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” “I can categorically say I wouldn’t be a writer if it wasn’t for ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer,’” she’s said. “I was 12 or 13 when the show first aired, and I felt like it was talking directly to me. Adolescence is hell, at least it was for ill-fitting glasses, retainer wearing, frizzy-haired me. I loved the strength of Buffy’s character, but I also loved that she made mistakes.”

Diablo Cody and Emily Silver Collaborating on New Cop Drama for Fox was originally published in Women and Hollywood on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.
