Storyline

Brilliant, but socially inept, forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperence Brennan works at the Jeffersonian Institute in Washington DC. After consulting for him on a FBI case, she is approached by cocky yet charming ex-Army Ranger turned Special Agent, Seeley Booth to help the Bureau solve crimes by identifying human remains that are too far gone for standard FBI forensic investigations. Brennan's empirical, literal view of the world causes friction with Booths emotive, instinctive attitude creating a volatile relationship. However as their case load increases the symbiotic partnership produces results and with the support of Brennan's Squint Squad, murderers, past and present should be on the look out. Trivia

There have been several references to Agent Seeley Booth being a "direct descendant" of John Wilkes Booth. In reality, is is highly unlikely that John Wilkes Booth had any direct descendants. As the assassin of Abraham Lincoln and the first-ever assassin of any U. S. president, Booth's life history has been exhaustively scrutinized by generations of historical scholars, and there is absolutely no evidence that he ever married or fathered any children, legitimate or illegitimate. Several of John Wilkes Booth's brothers and sisters did have children, but in genealogical terms, to be a *direct* descendant of J. W. Booth, Seeley Booth would have to be descended from a child of his, and not just a niece or nephew. See more »

Goofs

In several episodes in Season 1, the red and blue police lights in the rear of Booth's FBI Tahoe are installed incorrectly so that the lights face the interior of the vehicle. Its best seen in 1.20, when they're driving to the small town. If the lights face the interior of the vehicle, they obviously cannot be seen outside of the vehicle (plus they probably blind the occupants of the vehicle). See more »

Not just for Kathy Reichs fans..
14 September 2005 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

OK, so I AM a big fan of Kathy Reichs books, and was intrigued to see what this show would be like. The addition of David Boreanaz also was a big draw, as he is a very charismatic actor(and I adored Angel!) For fans of Ms Reichs books, this is a slightly odd amalgam of Kathy herself and her main character Temperance Brennan, who on the show is also a crime author (like Ms Reichs - a top forensic anthropologist and author.)

The characters are all new, apart from Brennan's ex-husband Pete (although we only got a glimpse of him in the season premiere) plus it is set in Washington DC rather than Canada and Virginia as in the books.

Tempe herself is rather different than the book character. Emily Deschanel is fine, but rather young and headstrong compared to the book Tempe. Even in the one episode, we have seen her rushing into things quite recklessly. I guess they wanted to make her a little more dynamic for TV.

The chemistry between Brennan and Booth (Boreanaz) was pretty good from the start, although they need to handle it properly. Maybe the Mulder and Scully reference is a hint of how they might handle things. However, the crime was a little flimsy. This first episode seemed to focus far more on establishing character and tone than on plot. Probably something that will change with future episodes.

On the whole, Riechs fans can have fun being snooty and complaining about Tempe's drinking and the lack of her cat, but I thought the show had definite possibilities. I know I'm keen to see how things unfold.
