Taylor Swift's "New Year's Day" Lyrics Reveal So Much About the New Taylor

  • BuzzSugar
Taylor Swift's Reputation has finally arrived and it's glorious, but there's something extra special about the album's bittersweet final track, "New Year's Day." Thanks to Swift's special performance of her old-school anthem on The Tonight Show, "New Year's Day" may always be associated with Jimmy Fallon's mother now. However, as beautiful as the moment when Fallon and Swift embraced was, the song wasn't written as an ode to the comedian's late mother. If you want to know if there's a bigger meaning behind "New Year's Day," you don't have to look any further than the lyrics. The track is a standout not only because it has that "old Taylor" feel, but also because of its maturity. "New Year's Day" reveals a Swift who is looking for lasting relationships. She's not interested in the fleeting moments of happiness that come when the ball drops as the old year fades away.

Taylor Swift Debuts
Taylor Swift and Shonda Rhimes' Tgit are a match made in heaven. During a break in ABC's Scandal, Swift debuted "New Year's Eve," the closing track off her new album Reputation (available Friday). It marked her first performance of a new song in three years, and it was her first TV appearance promoting her new music, a follow up to 2014's 1989. The performance was pre-taped during one of Swift's Secret Sessions in her Rhode Island home. "There's glitter on the floor after the party / Girls carrying their shoes down in the lobby / Candle wax and Polaroids on the hardwood floor / You and me from the night before but / Don't read the last page / But I stay when you're lost and...

Soundtracking: "Big Mouth"

Chris takes on the original songs of Netflix's new raunchy delight...

Have you caught up to Netflix’s newest and filthiest animated series Big Mouth? From the minds of Nick Kroll and John Mulaney, it’s a take-no-prisoners look at puberty that’s actually rather sweet and thoughtful between cringeworthy, painfully reminiscent laughs. Now before you relegate it to the crass animated rung of less imaginative programs, take note that the show is quite surprising on many fronts - not least of which is its hilarious original songs.

The important role of music in youth is a recurring theme of this column but Big Mouth catches its young characters in an interesting middle ground, musically speaking. The onset of grown up hormones often means your musical tastes are growing up as well, leaving behind simpler tunes. Think of the show's musical stylings like a logical, but naughty progression from Schoolhouse Rock or Free to Be.

Italian Movies Are Struggling in U.S. Theaters, But This Distribution Experiment Could Change That

Italian Movies Are Struggling in U.S. Theaters, But This Distribution Experiment Could Change That
When “Indivisible” screened for a crowd at Lincoln Center as the opening night selection of its annual “Open Roads: New Italian Cinema” series, it had no U.S. distribution plan. In late 2016, it had screened in higher-profile slots in Venice and Toronto, where buyers paid no heed. But at Lincoln Center, the movie — a seriocomic story about 18-year-old conjoined twins pursuing a music career (real-life twins Angela and Marianna Fontana) — played through the roof.

That was when Ira Deutchman saw its potential.

“I just fell in love with it,” the veteran distribution executive said. “It’s got everything in it. The movie is not a depressing, severe art film that requires people to look at it like work. Maybe distributors didn’t see the commerciality in a story about conjoined twins, but the women are beautiful and the movie is surprisingly entertaining.”

See Kristen Wiig, Jimmy Fallon Improvise Absurd Scene From Mad Libs
Kristen Wiig joined Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show on Wednesday to improvise a goofy medical scene based on a nonsensical Mad Lib game.

The recurring Mad Lib Theater segment has previously featured the likes of Kevin Spacey, Chris Pratt and Benedict Cumberbatch. For the first half of the skit, which can quickly get repetitive, Fallon prompts his partner for a series of words. "Type of profession?" "Cruise director." "Type of relative?" "Second cousin." This continues for roughly three minutes.

In the second part of the segment, Fallon and his

'Kuwtk': Scott Disick Defends Bringing a Girl on Family Trip: 'I'm a F**ked Up Horrible Sex Addict'
The ongoing drama between Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick came to a head and actually found some resolution on Sunday's heated Keeping Up With the Kardashians.

Picking up where the show left off last week, Scott was being interrogated by his ex-girlfriend, her sisters Kim and Khloe Kardashian, and their mom, Kris Jenner, over whether or not he had brought a random girl to their family vacation in Costa Rica.

After admitting that he had, Scott tried to defend himself, saying, "Obviously, we're both trying to move on. That's what we've all been saying. So I'm trying to do everything I can f**king do to not think about her."

Shades of Blue Season 2 Episode 7 Review: A House Divided

  • TVfanatic
Woz and Harlee’s crew splintered under the weight of their own secrets and lies on Shades of Blue Season 2 Episode 7.

Can any of them survive if they’re no longer backing one another up?

When Harlee began her confession in Shades of Blue Season 2 Episode 6, I wondered just how truthful she would be. It turned out, not so much.

Wozniak: I don't know if I love you or if I hate you for what you just did.

Harlee: You and me both.

Wozniak: It was a hell of a gesture, but it doesn't absolve either of us.

Harlee: It wasn't about absolution. It was just about acknowledging what I did. They deserve to know the truth.

Wozniak: But it's not the whole truth. The FBI turned you before the heist.

Harlee: The whole truth would have broken us apart and I won't let that happen.

‘In Dubious Battle’ Review: A James Franco Period Protest Drama, Dubiously Made

‘In Dubious Battle’ Review: A James Franco Period Protest Drama, Dubiously Made
In Dubious Battle” is not the first movie about a labor strike with Robert Duvall as the antagonizing boss man; that honor goes to the 1992 Disney musical starring Christian Bale, “Newsies,” in which Duvall portrayed Joseph Pulitzer. “Newsies” went on to receive five Golden Raspberry Award nominations, but it contained more drama and gusto than this humorless dirge from director-star James Franco.

This smug period drama follows the conventional narrative of an idealistic revolutionary and his fearless leader as they incite a strike among apple pickers in California’s fictional Torgas Valley. Matt Rager adapted the script from John Steinbeck’s 1936 novel, and the film is largely based on events that occurred during the California labor strikes of 1933.

The Expanse Season 2 Episode 3 Review: Static

Seriously, how perfectly timed was The Expanse Season 2 Episode 3 to offer parallels to some serious, present-day, world-order issues?

Spot on.

The show creators tick a ton of boxes: xenophobia, anti-immigrant backlash, patriotism, military aggression, vigilante justice, corporate ethics, bioterrorism, genocide, secret back-channel communications between government officials and an alleged terrorist group, and a religious order offering salvation to a lost soul.

But they were intertwined in such a way that it doesn’t at all feel as if the pertinent issues are just boxes being ticked. The impeccable timing and solid execution — with some breathtaking visual effects — combined to deliver another strong episode.

Meanwhile, big, bad Protomolecule was slithering and oozing all over Eros asteroid and, as Cortazar, the captured Protogen scientist excitedly noted, was “building something.”

But some of the most interesting action wasn’t taking place on the Rocinante or on Tycho Station. It’s on the Scirroco,

Film Review: ‘Befikre’

Film Review: ‘Befikre’
Bollywood’s weakness for foreign locales gets the ultimate French twist in “Befikre,” a Paris-set contemporary romance that asks the age-old question: Can casual sex between friends ever really be separated from love? Director-scripter Aditya Chopra’s first film without Shah Rukh Khan aims so hard to be in tune with current mores – kisses and rumpled bed sheets are as common as papadums at an Indian street fair – that it screams “today!” in every scene, yet the energy level is kept at such a high pitch that its charms are unsustainable. Star Ranveer Singh flaunts his impressively sculpted physique whenever possible, happily ensuring gender parity in body objectification, though he seems to want to upstage co-star Vaani Kapoor at all times. While the stars’ on-screen chemistry works creatively, audiences weren’t buying it; receipts for the movie were less than anticipated.

Perhaps Chopra (“Mohabbatein”), back in the helmer’s chair after eight years,

Ranveer and Vaani’s Befikre Mood Shines Through in You and Me

The latest song You and Me from Befikre embodies a common contemporary sentiment among today’s young- a special relationship that has ‘no label’. Dharam and Shyra build up a strong comfort level with each other by just hanging out together, indulging in fun, frolic and making the most of mundane time together.

In fact, shooting for this relaxed, happy song brought in moments of unplanned enjoyment for the cast and crew. Vaani Kapoor recalls, “I remember we shot for some street side food shopping and had to shoot a portion of eating crepes together. As it was quite cold, we absolutely loved eating them, and kept eating more than we needed to!”

The song also features Vaani Kapoor hopping up and down with a plaster cast in a hospital, which Ranveer Singh, typically found hilarious. And so he was made to give company to his leading lady with this hopping step too.
