Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez Officially Announced as the New Judges for Tenth Season of American Idol

22 September 2010 11:31 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

After much anticipation and speculation as to who would replace departing judges Ellen DeGeneres, Kara DioGuardi and most tragically Simon Cowell, Fox has finally announced what everyone online already seemed to know. Actress/pop star Jennifer Lopez and Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler have signed on as the new judges for the 10th season of the outrageously popular reality competition series American Idol. Meanwhile, record producer Randy Jackson is the only original judge and holdover from last season who has opted to return. Hit the jump for some quotes from the new judges:

Lopez was probably the hardest to snag for the competition (though she had previously been a mentor on the show), but Fox was able to reel her in with a first-look deal at Fox Films so she can keep making poor romantic comedies like The Back-Up Plan and Monster-in-Law. The singer/actress says, “For nine years I’ve »

'How To Train Your Dragon' Flies Past Jennifer Lopez And 'The Losers'

'Back-Up Plan' and the season's second comic book adaptation fail to impress.

#1 "How To Train Your Dragon" ($15 million)

#2 "The Back-Up Plan" ($12.3 million)

#3 "Date Night" ($10.6 million)

#4 "The Losers" ($9.6 million)

#5 "Kick-Ass" ($9.5 million)

It's not every weekend that a well-known actress returns to the big screen after a four-year absence, nor is it every weekend that two action-heavy comic book adaptations are playing in theaters nationwide. Despite these rare opportunities, moviegoers decided to stick with a tried-and-true favorite and made "How to Train Your Dragon" first place at the box office once more in its fifth week in theaters.

The DreamWorks Animation movie earned $15 million this weekend, bringing the family-friendly film's domestic total up to $178 million. Although not a particularly lucrative victory, first place is a nice consolation prize as "Dragon" very narrowly lost to director Matthew Vaughn's "Kick-Ass" last weekend.

J-Lo needs a Back-Up Plan as romcom underwhelms Us box office

26 April 2010 4:55 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Jennifer Lopez's first romcom since Monster-in-Law was left trailing by DreamWorks' How to Train Your Dragon, now in its fifth weekend

The winner

How to Train Your Dragon's flight has been loopy but rewarding thus far and the well-reviewed animated movie touched down at No 1 in its fifth weekend. It added an estimated $15m (£9.7m) to raise its running total to $178m, combining with the $194m overseas tally for a tasty $372m and rising in cinemas – and that's before we even begin to think about DVD, cable and TV.

Sharp-eyed followers of this chart will recall that the DreamWorks Animation release ended last weekend at No 1 too, only for Kick-Ass to boot it into silver medal position at the start of last week. It would appear the Dragon attack has vanquished all foes this time, given the $2.7m gap between it and The Back-Up Plan in second place. »

Bankability Breakdown:Jennifer Lopez

22 April 2010 1:49 PM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

This weekend marks the return of Jennifer Lopez to mainstream movies after a five-year hiatus. For a stretch that lasted from the late 1990s on through 2005, Ms. Lopez was arguably one of the most bankable actresses. That may sound strange today in light of her last theatrical release, El Cantante, making just $7.6 million in 2007, while another movie, Bordertown, went straight-to-video (not to mention the waning record sales of her music career). Perhaps contributing to a negative perception of her prior drawing power is the fact that she never starred in an intended blockbuster and none of her movies grossed more than $100 million (though three did adjusted for ticket price inflation). Following supporting work in pictures like My Family and Money Train, Jennifer Lopez broke out into leading roles in 1997 with back-to-back hits Selena and Anaconda. Music biography Selena racked up $35.3 million or the equivalent of around $60 million adjusted for ticket price inflation, »

'Back-Up Plan,' 'Losers' open this weekend

22 April 2010 1:00 PM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

J.Lo picked a good weekend to get back on the big screen. Whether the actress-singer picked the right film remains to be seen.

CBS Films' Jennifer Lopez starrer "The Back-Up Plan" looks like the strongest wide release hitting multiplexes Friday, with Warner Bros.' action pic "The Losers" tracking a tad behind. But neither is likely to top the weekend boxoffice.

Lopez most recently appeared in the 2006 music drama "El Cantante" before taking a few years off for child-rearing. The PG-13 "Plan" was directed by TV helmer Alan Poul ("Big Love") and co-stars Alex O'Loughlin ("White Out") in a romantic comedy about a couple's pregnancy-entangled relationship.

"It's definitely a chick flick," CBS Films distribution topper Steven Friedlander said. "But in terms of its opening, the tracking over the past few weeks has shown to be less of a science than it once might have been. In any event, »

Jennifer Lopez's Working Class Roots

21 April 2010 10:22 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

The prevailing story of Jennifer Lopez's film career has been one of decline, the promise of "Out of Sight" collapsing in a string of simple romantic comedies. Watching these post-Soderbergh movies as a group, though, reveals that Lopez is actually a sly, insolently funny performer, and one who repeatedly selects roles that are defined by their work. Lopez has played a wedding planner, a maid, a dance instructor, a temp, a caterer, a dog walker, and she's actually depicted on the job.

Hollywood generally prefers to ignore the day-to-day expertise that goes into cleaning a room or serving an appetizer (a telling sign in "Maid in Manhattan" reads, "strive to be invisible"), but Lopez actively seeks out these moments. "The Wedding Planner," "Maid in Manhattan," "Shall We Dance," and "Monster-in-Law" are a remarkably similar quartet in this respect, presenting Lopez as the rare actor who can be read as »

Jennifer Lopez Refuses to Parade Kids Around

Jennifer Lopez doesn't want her children to have a "weird existence". The "The Back-Up Plan" actress, who has two-year-old twins, Max and Emme, with husband Marc Anthony, is keen to keep her family life private as much as possible because she knows too much attention could have a bad effect.

"We're not ones to parade the kids around. Marc is really adamant about that. He's really protective. We don't want them getting used to that life," she said. "It's a weird existence. I used to be of the attitude, many years ago, that I would just live my life and not care. But at the same time, you shouldn't just throw caution to the wind, because there are consequences to that lifestyle."

Although she and Marc would like to do lots of things together, the 40-year-old beauty feels a "responsibility" to her fans to work without her spouse. Jennifer, who »

Jennifer Lopez Ready to Go Overboard in Remake of Goldie Hawn's Romantic Comedy

Jennifer Lopez may be getting ready to go overboard... or, more specifically, Overboard. The singer-dancer-actress, who hasn't been glimpsed on the big screen since the overlooked Bordertown (2006) and El Cantante (2006), seems set to stake a new claim to movie stardom. Look for her alongside Alex O'Loughlin, Danneel Harris and Anthony Anderson in the romantic comedy The Back-Up Plan (2010), due out in theaters on April 23. And, according to the film trade publication the Hollywood Reporter, she's about to finalize a deal to remake the Goldie Hawn-Kurt Russell romantic comedy Overboard (1987). For those with good memories, a great video or DVD collection, and/or a knack for finding sweet old movies while channel surfing, Overboard was a low-key piece of entertainment directed by Garry Marshall, who most recently brought us the recent box office hit Valentine's Day (2010). Jennifer Lopez needs a different Back-Up Plan to rediscover her talent

11 January 2010 4:40 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

It's back to cookie-cutter romcoms as Jennifer Lopez makes a comeback. But someone needs to point her towards her adventurous 90s films if she really wants to recover her mojo

Vincent Van Gogh, Nick Drake, Jennifer Lopez. Three lives marked by public apathy and critical disregard. Three lives whose genius lay undiscovered until it was too late. Three lives scratched out in a mess of poverty and desperate anonymity.

Apart from Jennifer Lopez, obviously, because she's one of the most famous women on Earth and she's sold 48m albums and her films have made a total of $900m around the world and she's released 18 different perfumes and has definitely kissed Ben Affleck on the mouth at least once. But that doesn't matter – Jennifer Lopez is easily just as unknown and underappreciated as the other two, whatever their names were. It's about time that the world woke up and started to »

Fan Rant: Please Shut Up, Jennifer Lopez

6 January 2010 3:48 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Over a decade ago, when Movieline wasn't a website, but rather a magazine that many of us received every month, there was a little article inside with one Ms. Jennifer Lopez. The Fly Girl from In Living Color had worked her way out of dance status, to roles in television series, and then to film and her Golden Globe-nominated starring role in Selena. From there, she had Anaconda, U Turn, and of course, the project that most fans hold above all others -- Out of Sight.

Anyway, the infamous article saw Lopez absolutely reeking with egotism, as she chastised Gwenyth Paltrow, Winona Ryder, Madonna, and Cameron Diaz. (You can read some of it here.) This new girl on the block -- before she became the all-powerful "Jenny on the Block" -- sat there chastising all of her fellow actresses as if she was the second coming, the bees knees. It was completely annoying, »
