Johnny Depp bought the movie rights before the book's initial release.
Although released after Need for Speed (2014), it was shot before. Aaron Paul was so impressed by Imogen Poots on this film that he encouraged her to apply for the female lead there.
Emile Hirsch was cast as J.J. but he dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. Aaron Paul replaced him.
When Jess and JJ go to the spot where Jennifer (Jess's sister) disappeared there is a place called White Rabbit in the background. The White Rabbit is from Alice in Wonderland where a girl disappears down a hole. Jennifer disappeared.
A Long Way Down is the third collaboration between Pierce Brosnan and Rosamund Pike, following Die Another Day (2002) and The World's End (2013).
The first of two 2014 films to star Toni Collette and Rosamund Pike together. The second was Hector and the Search for Happiness (2014).
Imogen Poots is reunited with two co-stars of past DreamWorks Pictures films: she previously appeared with Toni Collette in Fright Night (2011) and with Aaron Paul in Need for Speed (2014).
One of the opening shots of Pierce Brosnan, looking down toward the ground from a height is almost identical to his introductory shot in 'Goldeneye' (1995).
