The Notable Films of 2011: Part Five

31 December 2010 5:23 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

The Factory

Opens: 2011

Cast: John Cusack, Jennifer Carpenter, Ksenia Solo, Mae Whitman, Sonya Walger

Director: Morgan O'Neill

Summary: An obsessed cop is on the trail of a serial killer prowling the streets of Buffalo, New York. When his teenage daughter disappears, he drops any pretension and professional restraint he might have to get the killer.

Analysis: Shot almost three years ago now, Dark Castle had originally planned to release this thriller back in late 2009. However for reasons unspecified, it has been sitting on a shelf for some time and keeps getting delayed. In cases like these, the most obvious reason is usually the correct one - it stinks (eg. "Case 39"). The company certainly has had its fair share of box-office duds lately including "Whiteout," "Ninja Assassin," "The Losers," "Orphan" and "Splice".

Yet Cusack generally has good taste in projects, his last venture into horror was the surprisingly effective Stephen King »

Jeremy Renner In For 'Thor' Cameo, Samuel L. Jackson Out?

30 December 2010 7:43 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Jeremy Renner was outed as the front runner for Hawkeye months in advance of his finalized casting, with a report from last year suggesting that he'd play the avenging archer not just in "The Avengers," but also in "Thor."

While Renner is clearly playing Hawkeye in the superhero team-up movie, now it appears that he really does have a role to play in "Thor" as well. The Wrap reports that the "Hurt Locker" actor will mark his first performance as Clint Barton in Kenneth Branagh's "Thor" adaptation, set to arrive in theaters next May.

Supposed insiders refused to comment on the context of Hawkeye's appearance, the duration of his involvement and when in the film his scenes take place. They did state, however, that Samuel L. Jackson won't appear in "Thor" as Nick Fury.

Whether or not there's any truth to the Hawkeye cameo remains to be seen, though »

Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye to Appear in ‘Thor’… Maybe

30 December 2010 7:24 AM, PST | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

With Marvel’s epic comic book movie experiment “The Avengers” getting closer and closer to reality, rumors are starting to fly about how the studio will be setting the stage in their next two solo efforts, “Thor” and “Captain America.” After all, “Iron Man 2″ was chock full of “Avengers” building blocks (see: Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, etc.), so they must have something up their sleeve for “Thor,” right?

Well, we may be starting to get some of the answers, because The Wrap suggests that Jeremy Renner will be appearing as the superhero Hawkeye in “Thor” this May.

Hawkeye, of course, is a regular joe whose incredible skill with a bow and fearless attitude allow him to stand shoulder to shoulder with gods and legends. It’s the perfect sort of scrappy underdog part for Renner. And Renner hasn’t been shy about hyping the role, telling Empire over »

First Look At Tomar-Re In 'Green Lantern'

30 December 2010 7:14 AM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Next year will be superhero movie heaven for fans of the genre with "Thor," "Captain America: The First Avenger" and "Green Lantern" all swooping into theaters next spring or summer. But with three big budget franchise films all gunning for the same audience within a few months of each other, we figure at least one of them will underperform, and if we were betting men, we'd put our money on "Green Lantern." The first trailer for the film was shockingly dull with some questionable CGI and overall tone that we couldn't quite get with. And, for this writer who is… »

Thor to Feature Hawkeye Cameo

29 December 2010 9:06 PM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

According to a report posted on thewrap.com, the May 6 release of the Kenneth Branagh directed Thor will feature a cameo  appearance by the Marvel superhero and Avengers co-member Hawkeye. Last summer at Comic Con it was announced that the 2012 Avengers film to be directed by Joss Whedon would include the master archer to be played by The Hurt Locker’s Jeremy Renner. In the articles, a source who had seen an early cut of Thor confirmed that Hawkeye is in the film, despite earlier quotes from Renner denying the character’s involvement. It’s speculated that he will introduced in a “tag” scene following the end credits as Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury was at the end of the first Iron Man film in 2008. It was confirmed that Fury will not be in Thor, while S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Coulson played by Clark Gregg will be featured.

‘The Avengers’ Adds Another Heroine to the Mix

29 December 2010 2:17 PM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

While Joss Whedon’s The Avengers is already packed with star-power, boasting Chris Evans (Captain America), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), and Chris Hemsworth (Thor), rumor has is Marvel is on the prowl to add one more star to this superhero team.

THR reveals Marvel is looking to play down the sausage fest vibe by adding another lady to the lineup. But which comic book heroine will be hitting the big screen? The popular theory is The Wasp, a founding member and sometimes leader of the Avengers, who can fly, shrink, and fire energy blasts. The only word on casting at this point is she will not be played by troubled teen star Demi Lovato or previously rumored vixen Eva Longoria.

Playlist posits that the addition of The Wasp could lead to fellow Avenger founder, »

Top 10 New Comic Book Series of 2010

29 December 2010 1:49 PM, PST | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

Again only comics I’ve bought that were published in 2010. If you think I’ve missed something please let me know in the comments section below, after all this is only mine and Phil’s opinions. I’m always open to trying new things… comics, I mean comics!

1: Uncanny X-Force | Marvel | W: Rick Remender | A: Jerome Opena

Only 3 issues in an this series is looking like the best X-Men series currently being published, and that’s not to say the titles by Fraction, Gillen, Carey, and David aren’t good, it’s just that Uncanny X-Force has that certain something that makes it stand out. It’s a combination of the tight, fast paced writing of Remender, the amazing art by Opena and White, and lots of little touches that the creators add that make it a perfect comic.

2: Avengers Children’s Crusade | Marvel | W: Allan Heinberg | A: »

Demi Lovato still has her 2011 touring plan, but one gig the teen sensation doesn't have on her agenda is a starring role in "The Avengers." Contrary to reports, the 18-year-old singer/actress will not be featured in the film about a team of Marvel superheroes, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

THR reports that sources inside Lovato's and Marvel's camps are "denying across the board" that the "Camp Rock" star is involved in any way in the all-star comic book adaptation, which is tentatively due in 2012. Part of the difficulty in hiring the actress is that the Joss Whedon-directed film will begin shooting in spring 2011 and the starlet is still undergoing her medical treatment for "emotional and physical issues."

Demi Lovato Isn't In 'The Avengers,' But Marvel Is Reportedly Seeking New Female Character

29 December 2010 7:43 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

As it turns out, Demi Lovato doesn't have what it takes to fight alongside "The Avengers."

Earlier in the week, the "Camp Rock" actress, teen singer and troubled Disney star found herself at the center of rumors suggesting her involvement in "The Avengers," Marvel Studios and director Joss Whedon's upcoming superhero flick starring Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America and Chris Hemsworth as Thor.

Now, sources close to Lovato and Marvel are both completely denying the actress' involvement. The Hollywood Reporter reports that "part of the problem in hiring the actress is that she's currently in rehab 'for emotional and physical issues.'"

There was also the problem of figuring out which role Lovato would occupy. We did our best to puzzle it out, naming Janet Van Dyne, Stature, Kate Bishop and Karolina Dean as possible candidates. Turns out that she'll play none of these characters, »

Hollywoodnews.com: As soon as “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part One” ended, I wanted to see the finale … so it’s no surprise that “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Two” leads a list of the Most Anticipated Movies for 2011 in a poll conducted by Fandango.com.

More than 1,000 people surveyed over the Christmas holiday chose the last “Harry Potter” as the film they can’t wait to see next year. Fans of the boy wizard will have to wait until July 15, which is when Warner Bros.’ series finally concludes.

Coming in second place in the poll was yet another sequel: “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1,” which is due in theaters on Nov. 18. Guys, meanwhile, said they are most looking forward to the second “Hangover,” which will be in theaters on May 26.

Probably False Rumor: Alan Tudyk For Ant-Man?

28 December 2010 5:37 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

With the release of both Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger only a few months away and The Avengers scheduled to begin production in April, the next couple years are going to be filled to the brim with plenty of Marvel news. Thanks to the revelation at Comic Con, however, casting won't really be one of the issues...except in the case of Ant-Man. While he is the only key member of The Avengers that won't be featured in Joss Whedon's superhero ensemble film, Edgar Wright's script for a solo movie has been bouncing around for months and could very well start production in the next year. We've already heard plenty of rumors that have never been substantiated, specifically the one about Firefly star Nathan Fillion taking the part, but now we have a new rumor emerging - and it's one of Fillion's former co-stars. Has Demi Lovato been cast in Marvel's 'The Avengers'?

Fanboys were in a tizzy on Dec. 28, after Radar Online reported that Disney star Demi Lovato was up for a role in Marvel's highly-anticipated "The Avengers," which is set to begin filming in April. So is the report true? Will the "Sonny With a Chance" star's first post-rehab move be a huge blockbuster film?

No need to "Hulk" out, "Avengers" fans. The Hollywood Reporters says sources connected to both Lovato and Marvel have quickly denied the rumor. However, the Marvel source did have more to say about the film.

The source revealed that they are looking to cast an actress in an unspecified role. So far the only actress cast in the film has been Scarlett Johansson (as the Black Widow). The Joss Whedon directed film is, so far, male-heavy, with Robert Downey Jr.(Iron Man), the recently married Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Mark Ruffalo (in his first appearance as Hulk »
