The Weekend Warrior 9/30/2016: Deepwater Horizon, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, Masterminds

28 September 2016 8:00 AM, PDT | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.

This Past Weekend:

While the new movies reigned at the box office this past weekend, both Antoine Fuqua’s The Magnificent Seven (Sony) and the animated Storks (Warner Bros.) didn’t fare nearly as well as our projections, both falling short by about $10 million. The Magnificent Seven, starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt, fared decently with $34.7million, which is about the average for Washington’s films, but the fourth highest opening for a Western after last year’s The Revenant, the animated Rango, and Cowboys and Aliens. Storks’ $21.3 million opening wasn’t great compared to other animated September releases with Sony still holding the September opening record with Hotel Transylvania 2, but it should continue to do well with no other animated movies opening for another month. »

Can Miss Peregrine Beat Magnificent Seven at the Box Office?

27 September 2016 10:11 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

September has proven to be quite the difficult month for box office predictions, with three newcomers under-performing two weeks ago, and last weekend's winner The Magnificent Seven over-performing to win with $34.7 million. This weekend, three newcomers arrive to close out the month, 20th Century Fox's Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, Lionsgate's Deepwater Horizon and Relativity's Masterminds. Only one can take home the box office crown, and we're predicting that movie will be Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.

Box Office Mojo reports that Miss Peregrine will debut in roughly 3,400 theaters this weekend, with Deepwater Horizon opening in an estimated 3,000 theaters while Masterminds is set to open in roughly 2,800 theaters. While there is no Rotten Tomatoes score for Masterminds, both Miss Peregrine (62% Fresh) and Deepwater Horizon (89% Fresh) are faring quite well with the critics thus far. We're predicting that Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children will come out on top this weekend with $32.4 million. »

Shanghai Noon Sequel Being Developed

6 September 2016 1:54 PM, PDT | Cinelinx | See recent Cinelinx news »

Talks are going to restart the franchise Shanghai Noon. I have to admit, didn’t see that one coming.

Back in 2000 the duo of Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson teamed up for the action comedy Shanghai Noon. Set in the old west the movie was popular enough to get a sequel in 2003 titled Shanghai Knights. The guys definitely had some great chemistry and even my dislike of one of the actors, here’s a hint it’s not Jackie, got plenty of laughs out of me and even though the sequel wasn’t as good I still enjoyed it. So now The Hollywood Reporter that there is a sequel in development and it will be helmed by director Jared Hess (Nacho Libre, Napoleon Dynamite).

Original writers Miles Millar and Alfred Gough have provided a story which will be penned by Theodore Riley and Aaron Buchsbaum. Hess is currently finalizing the »

Napoleon Dynamite” director Jared Hess is set to helm “Shanghai Noon” sequel “Shanghai Dawn” for MGM.

Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson are in negotiations to reprise their roles for the long-awaited third film in the franchise.

Tom Dey’s original movie followed Chan’s character, who was forced to team up with an outlaw (Wilson) to save a Chinese princess. The film became a hit, grossing $99 million worldwide. David Dobkin’s “Shanghai Knights,” which had a similar plot but was set in London, underperformed at the box office, earning $88 million, leading to a third film being shelved.

29 July 2016 7:58 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

You’d have to cast your mind back to December of 2015 for the last time Jared Hess heist flick Masterminds made the headlines.

Pushed back a full year, a new trailer has emerged today reminding us all that, yes, Masterminds is still a thing – and it’s arriving sooner than you might think.

Zach Galifianakis and Ghostbusters star Kristen Wiig take point as two lowly schemers, who draw up what they believe to be a foolproof plan to become $17 million richer. Spoilers: things go south pretty fast, and whether you take an inkling for Masterminds will likely depend on your tolerance of Hess’ other features, namely Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre.

Zack Galifianakis, Kristen Wiig, and Owen Wilson Become ‘Masterminds’ in New Trailer

28 July 2016 1:00 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

After the uneven Don Verdean, Jared Hess is returning to adventure comedy with more of an action tinge in the new trailer for the long-delayed Masterminds. Sad-sack night guard for an armored car company David Ghantt (Zach Galifianakis) is getting married to Jandice (Kate McKinnon), who comes in a package with her mother. He aspires to be something more, believing he is destined for adventure. Enter Kelly (Kristen Wiig), a new employee with a plan to rob the bank with her cohorts (including Owen Wilson), all the while special agent Scanlon (Ghostbusters star Leslie Jones) is hot on their tail.

Throw in a crazed hitman played by the always-game Jason Sudeikis, Hess’ oddball stylings, and the guaranteed constant improv from the cast, and what you get is the makings of a goofy, potentially dark action-comedy to kick off the fall. Here’s hoping it doesn’t get too bogged down »

Napoleon Dynamite’s Jared Hess will helm Nickelodeon’s cinematic nostalgia trip, Nicktoons, starring the Rugrats and more…

Not content with creating a channel dedicated to 1990s reruns and commissioning a new Hey Arnold! TV movie, Nickelodeon has gone one step further with the nostalgia – it's announced a cinematic feature film.

This movie – going by the title Nicktoons – will include characters from Rugrats, Ren & Stimpy, Rocko’s Modern Life, Aaahh! Real Monster, and The Angry Beavers. They’ll all interact together in one big story, as opposed to a series of sketches.

Jared Hess of Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre and Gentlemen Broncos has signed up to direct. He’ll work on the script, as well, with his wife and regular collaborator Jerusha Hess (she worked on all three of those films, too).
