Anthony Horowitz, author of the book, recommended Alex Pettyfer to play Alex Rider after seeing his impressive performance in the lead role in the British TV drama Tom Brown's Schooldays (2005).

Because Alex Pettyfer was only 15 at the time, he was not allowed to drive the car in the car chase mentioned in the book, so it was instead converted to a horse chase so as the chase could still take place.

When Anthony Horowitz wrote the novel in 2000, he created a phenomenon in children's books, spurring a trend of junior spy books and inspiring thousands of previously reluctant readers. The character of Alex Rider is clearly a young James Bond and the books allude to it sometimes, but Horowitz doesn't enjoy the comparison.

In the books, there is an organization akin to SPECTRE from James Bond, Scorpia, and it's leader Zeljan Kurst is bald like Blofeld, the head of SPECTRE. Their plans are always thwarted by Alex Rider/James Bond. Scorpia is almost an acronym for what it does like SPECTRE, but SPECTRE is made up of disillusioned former secret agents who went into business for themselves.

When Anthony Horowitz wrote the last Alex Rider novel, Scorpia Rising, he was sad but he hoped he had finished the series on a high note. He thanked the teachers and librarians who had recommended the series to reluctant readers, and for making him feel less lonely as a writer; he wrote the acknowledgments section in March, 2011.

Anthony Horowitz felt Alex Rider was a lot more jaunty and carefree in Stormbreaker, but with each new book, death, danger, manipulation and the terrible things he's witnessed matured him. And now that he's gone, he will miss him. He thanked all the people who had made the series possible in the acknowledgments section of Scorpia Rising.
