Marc Alan Fishman: A Tale of Two Trailers

1 April 2017 5:00 AM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

This week, the gods of the interwebs granted us a look at two dichotomous trailers for a pair of blockbuster comic book films soon to be hitting the mega-multi-plexes. Spider-Man: Homecoming and Justice League gave us somewhere around four-minutes total of titillating three-dimensional text, brief respites of prose, and the best action snippets CG could render. But beyond those stark generalities comes two massive worlds apart.

This should come as no surprise to any of us. Spider-Man is packed with wit, charm, and street-level action amidst the hints at bigger set pieces. Justice League is a dark and sordid affair – not without its own charm and wit, but punctuated with the Synder-trademarked sepia-hued gravitas and angst. At this point, would it be enough to say I was ear-to-ear smiles at one trailer… and terribly nervous about the other?

Two guesses which is which. Then again, if I give you two »

Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” is a global box office sensation. The fairy tale remake debuted to a majestic $350 million worldwide during its first weekend in theaters.

The live action update of the 1991 animated classic scored the second biggest March debut on a global basis, coming in behind “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’s” $424.1 million launch.

Beauty and the Beast” earned $180 million internationally and an additional $170 million at the domestic box office, a sterling result for the $160 million-budgetted film. In a sign of its popularity, “Beauty and the Beast” topped the box office in nearly every market where it screened. The fairy tale romance earned $44.8 million in China, grossed $22.8 million in the United Kingdom, grabbed $11.9 million in South Korea, nabbed $10.7 million in Germany, and picked up $7.6 million in Italy. “Beauty and the Beast” even performed well in Russia, where its opening was overshadowed by controversy surrounding the inclusion of a gay character. »

Box Office: ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Smashes Records With Towering $170 Million Debut

19 March 2017 8:20 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

This is what makes Disney such a powerhouse.

Beauty and the Beast,” the studio’s latest live action update of a cartoon classic, waltzed its way to a towering $170 million debut this weekend, setting a new record for a March opening and solidifying the Mouse House’s status as the dominant player in the film business. No other company can match the streak that Disney is currently enjoying, thanks to a series of multi-billion acquisitions that put the likes of Pixar, Marvel, and LucasFilm in its Magic Kingdom.

Beauty and the Beast” represents another part of Disney’s branded strategy. It’s the latest fairy tale adaptation to hit screens. Others in the lucrative group include “Alice in Wonderland,” which picked up $1 billion worldwide, “Cinderella” with its $543.5 million global haul, and last year’s “The Jungle Book,” which racked up a mighty $966.6 million after finishing its run. ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Will Open Huge for Disney, but Just How Huge?

17 March 2017 3:55 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Beauty and the Beast” is expected to open huge for Disney this weekend, but just how huge?

The Mouse House’s biggest openings have come from its acquisition of Lucasfilm and Marvel Studios, with “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and both “Avengers” films among the top debuts of all time.

Experts project Disney’s latest film, “Beauty and the Beast,” to open between $140 and $155 million, which would put it high up on any box office list.

Here, we’ve divided Disney’s highest grossing opening weekends into the “Star Wars” and Marvel films, and everything else. In the combined rankings, “Beauty and the Beast” would rank seventh on list, but the way we have it here, the live action remake would top No. 1, above “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” and “Finding Dory.”

‘Beauty and the Beast’ Stars Emma Watson, Dan Stevens Are Surrounded by Chaos in Funny or Die Video (Watch)

17 March 2017 2:59 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The actual conversation with “Beauty and the Beast” stars Emma Watson and Dan Stevens wasn’t the focal point of Funny or Die’s interview with the cast members.

With the power of Oculus 360 degree immersive cameras, everything happening in the background of the interview was captured, ranging from a sobbing bride being chased by a groom to a cat cruising around on a rumba.

Surrounded by a floor covered with pizzas boxes, the interviewer began the chat by asking Watson if she would recommend kidnapping as a dating strategy, since the Beast kidnaps Belle and she then falls in love with him in the film.

“No, I would definitely stay away from that, even as a thought process really,” Watson replied while a security guard chased a man riding a hoverboard in the background.
