The slow death of Australian children’s TV drama

Australian children.s TV may have recently picked up an Emmy Kids award for the Abcme animation Doodles, but otherwise kids. TV in this country is in a dire state.

Free-to-air TV networks have to commission certain amounts of children.s programs each year. But in recent years there.s been a dismaying lack of new live action shows, or recognisably Australian content. Instead, local children.s TV has become dominated by animation with little sense of place.

This is a shame, because Australia.s most fondly remembered children.s TV shows are live action productions such as Mortified, Playschool, Blue Water High, and Round the Twist. When asked in a 2015 survey to name their favourite childhood TV characters, most people chose Round the Twist siblings Linda and Bronson, followed by Mortified.s Taylor Fry.

Beyond returns to drama after 11 years

Veteran writer and executive producer David Ogilvy has been appointed head of Beyond.s new scripted drama division, marking the company's return to the genre after 11 years.

The former ABC executive will develop scripted content across a broad range of genres for local and international markets, working with emerging and established writing, directing and producing talent.

Beyond's last drama series was Stingers, which wrapped production in 2004 after eight seasons on the Nine Network.

Ogilvy joins from ABC TV where he was commissioning editor of fiction since 2012. His credits as Ep at the ABC include The Code, Rake, Anzac Girls, Janet King, Hiding, Mabo, An Accidental Soldier, Paper Giants: Magazine Wars and The Straits.

Previously he worked as a writer and script producer on a broad range of adult and children.s drama.. His writing credits include East West 101, The Strip, Young Lions, Lockie Leonard, Dance Academy, Outriders, Blue Water High and Escape from Jupiter.

Noel Price to depart Endemol

An era in Australian children.s television comes to an end this Friday as Noel Price departs Endemol Australia after 17 years with Endemol and its predecessor Southern Star Entertainment.

As executive producer of children.s TV, Price created and/or oversaw some of Australia.s most successful animated and live action series including Blue Water High, Hairy Legs, In Your Dreams, Tracey McBean,. a gURLs wURLd, Classic Tales and Bottle Top Bill.

Find Your Voice producers launch crowd-funding campaign

Keisha Castle-Hughes and Adam Saunders have finished shooting Find Your Voice, an Australian-New Zealand film about a young Sydney Maori and musician who returns home after winning the lottery.

Now the producers aim to raise $30,000 via Indiegogo by December 24 to complete the film (formerly known as Million Dollar Mate), including editing, colour grade and sound design.

It.s the feature directing debut of Chris Herd, who developed the script with Saunders. The actor, whose credits include Blue Water High and Home and Away, plays Elvis .E. Pineaha, who has lost sight of who he is and what really counts. After winning the lottery, he returns to New Zealand on a journey of self-discovery.

In Auckland E meets the captivating Grace (Game of Thrones. Castle-Hughes), but she is initially put off by his brash manner. Soon, however, sparks fly.

Body of Proof is plotting a Casey Anthony-inspired episode, and the ABC crime drama is bringing in the big guns to fictionalize the now infamous case.

Per, Marcia Gay Harden (Damages) will play a Nancy Grace-like talking head covering the trial, while Rita Wilson (The Good Wife) will play the young defendant’s mother. The episode is slated to air in January. first reported the casting news.

'Pretty Little Liars' casts Aussie actor Lachlan Buchanan

Whenever there's a new guy in Rosewood, it tends to spell trouble for the "Pretty Little Liars" ladies, and we're guessing this time is no different.

Australian actor Lachlan Buchanan has snagged the recurring guest role of Duncan, Zap2it has confirmed. He'll appear in at least two episodes (maybe more!) when "Pretty Little Liars" returns in 2012. Duncan is the latest hottie who Aria, Emily, Spencer, and Hanna encounter as they unravel Alison's secrets.

24-year-old Buchanan is well known to Australian audiences as Charley on "Blue Water High," among other TV roles. U.S. fans know him best as Scott from the Cmt sitcom "Working Class."

"Pretty Little Liars" returns to ABC Family on Monday, January 2 and 8 p.m. Est.

I Wish I Were Stephanie V to screen at Times Square

During the New York City International Film Festival, Australian indie film I Wish I Were Stephanie V will screen at Times Square on Monday 22 August at 6.15pm.

Directed by Jd Cohen, written and starring Chloe Traicos as the 21 year old virgin Helen, its a story about immigrant life, love and tennis, aimed at fans of My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Bend it Like Beckham.

The film features a young cast of actors from Home and Away, Packed to the Rafters, Blue Water High, McLeod’s Daughters and Neighbours.

The film received a Best Film nomination at Digispaa in 2010, and won Best Feature Film at Indiefest USA, in June 2011.

For the Times Square screening the film will be slightly recut to be acceptable to a G-rating. Producer Laura Sivis said in a statement, “we’re going to have to redo some of the dialogue and a replace a few shots with less confrontational ones,

Aussie soaps score Kids Choice nominations

Neighbours and Home and Away have both been nominated at the 2009 Australian Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards. Home and Away secured only one nod and will go head-to-head with Neighbours in the fave drama show category. Tween soaps Blue Water High and H20: Just Add Water round out the nominations. Sample 'Legend of the Seeker' for Free

Legend of the Seeker debuts on Saturday as a first-run syndicated series. To let people sample the series, an extended preview is available as a free download at Apple’s iTunes store. Legend of the Seeker: A First Look is actually the first 30 minutes of the two-hour first episode.

The series is from executive producers Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert, who gained fame for their work on Hercules and Xena.

"Fans have been clamoring to get a first look at the series and based on the early response from the clips released on the Legend of the Seeker website, we knew this would be a huge success with audiences," Janice Marinelli, President, Disney-abc Domestic Television said in a release.

The WB Tries To Make A Comeback

Yeah, I did say The WB.

Some of you have repeatedly said in commentary or email communications with me that you’re tired of network TV and it just doesn’t appeal to you. I don’t blame you.

As of August 27th, The WB is trying to give you more options beside advertiser controlled TV. website is officially launching on the 27th of August. From the offered line up of web-casts, The WB is looking like it’s hoping to snag the viewers who used to watch The WB network on TV before it got absorbed into The CW because some of the offerings are old familiar, popular shows.

So I went over to the Beta site to check it out. The Beta wants me to sign up before accessing anything. I usually don’t like signing up before looking, but for you guys, I dove right in.

Sam Raimi's 'Wizard's' lands leads
NEW ORLEANS -- Craig Horner and Bridget Regan have been tapped to star in Sam Raimi's syndicated series Wizard's First Rule, which launches in the fall.

The scripted series, an hourlong weekly from Disney-ABC Domestic Television and ABC Studios, is based on Terry Goodkind's book Wizard's First Rule and epic fantasy series The Sword of Truth.

Horner will star as woodsman Richard Cypher, who transforms into a magical leader and joins with a mysterious woman named Kahlan (Regan) to stop a bloodthirsty, sinister tyrant.

Horner, an Australia native, recently co-starred on the Australian series Blue Water High. Regan recently co-starred in the Broadway comedy "Is He Dead?"

Wizard's has been cleared in 95% of the country for its fall launch. Production on the 22 episodes begins this month in New Zealand.

Raimi is executive producing with Robert Tapert, Joshua Donen, Ned Nalle and John Shiban.
