Blu-ray Review - Short Circuit (1986)

19 November 2012 3:00 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Short Circuit, 1986.

Directed by John Badham.

Starring Ally Sheedy, Steve Guttenberg, Fisher Stevens, Austin Pendleton, G.W. Bailey, Brian McNamara and Tim Blaney.

Synopsis:

An experimental military robot becomes sentient after being struck by lightning and befriends a young woman, who attempts to help him from being recaptured by the army.

Let's take a trip back to a simpler, more civilized age - the 1980s, where military robots enjoyed nothing better than settling down in front of the TV to watch old Marx Brothers movies or busting out some John Travolta dance moves to Saturday Night Fever, as opposed to obliterating humanity and taking over the world. Well, that's not quite true of course (one only needs to look at The Terminator for evidence of that), but it's certainly the case when it comes Number 5, the protagonist of director John Badham's (the aforementioned Saturday Night Fever) 1986 smash hit sci-fi comedy Short Circuit, »

Hop Director Tim Hill Pitches Playdate To 20th Century Fox

19 May 2012 11:58 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Tim Hill has come to represent a name studios can trust when it comes to family entertainment. His directorial credits include Muppets from Space, Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties, the first Alvin and the Chipmunks and Hop. So when the writer-director . whose credits also include the massively successful SpongeBob SquarePants franchise . announces plans for a family comedy titled Playdate, you can understand why studios would be willing to take a chance on the project. Hill will write and direct this new effort for 20th Century Fox, according to Deadline. Plot details are being held close to the vest, though it is being revealed that Hill will co-write his treatment with Dave Johnson. The title suggests something that happens during a playdate, though that easily could be a bait-and-switch for any type of story, really. It.s too soon to guess. There.s very little guesswork when it comes to »

Short Circuit reboot: has its director blown a fuse?

12 April 2012 4:18 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The man who brought us Alvin and the Chipmunks is promising an edgy remake of the 80s classic about a wisecracking robot

It's probably a good thing we've all calmed down about Michael Bay's origin-molesting remake of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, because otherwise this news might have pushed us over the edge for good. You see, not only is Short Circuit going to be remade, but this time it's going to be edgy.

Director Tim Hill has been speaking to the La Times about his plans for a rebooted Short Circuit. But, instead of addressing some of the bigger concerns about the original – like maybe not having an actor in brownface as one of the leads this time, or perhaps demonstrating a robot has gained consciousness in a way that doesn't involve him looking at some soup or laughing at Jew jokes – he used the interview to reel off »

‘Alvin and the Chipmunks’ + Robots = ‘Short Circuit’ Reboot

3 February 2012 2:55 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

According to The Hollywood Reporter, newcomer Matthew Lieberman has been signed to write the Short Circuit reboot going on over at Dimension Films. He’d previously written the not-at-all-liked Dr. Doolittle: Tail to the Chief which went straight to video on the coattails of the Eddie Murphy movies, but this project is an interesting way to get a foot in the door of the feature world. What’s more important is that Tim Hill is set to be the director. Hill’s recent work includes Alvin and the Chipmunks, Hop and Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties (apparently everyone involved loves “tail” puns). All of that sounds awful, but once upon a time, Hill also directed Muppets From Space. How someone got from weird and wonderful to boringly broad and homogenous is anyone’s guess. Forget it, fans. It’s Chinatown. That’s sad, but the most fascinating thing about bring back Johnny Five to life is »

‘Short Circuit’ Remake Snags Writer

2 February 2012 7:19 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

The Short Circuit remake has been a bit of an odd prospect. In fact, unlike so many other upcoming remakes and reboots, the jury is still kind of out on whether this particular project is a good or bad thing. While children of the ’80s like myself have fond memories of the original John Badham film starring Steve Guttenberg and Fisher Stevens, there’s a whole new generation that is pretty much unawares that that film existed. According to our own Screen Rant rules for remakes, that means this remake is fair game.

Of course, the news that Alvin and the Chipmunks and Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties director Tim Hill was going to be helming the Short Circuit remake has been something of a mixed blessing  - so news that ...
