Tabu to play Irrfan Khan's mother in Life Of Pi

18 December 2010 1:38 AM, PST | BollywoodHungama | See recent BollywoodHungama news »

By now its common knowledge that Irrfan Khan and Tabu would be seen together in internationally acclaimed filmmaker Ang Lee's ambitious project Life Of Pi. However, what is surprising or rather shocking is the fact that Tabu would be playing the role of Irrfan's mother in the film. Life of Pi is the story of self-discovery of Piscine Molitor 'Pi' Patel and is based on the Booker Prize winning novel of the same name. While 17 year old Delhi boy Suraj Sharma would be playing the role of the young Pi, Irrfan Khan would be seen playing the adult Pi. It may be recalled that Irrfan and Tabu were cast as husband-wife in Mira Nair's The Namesake, a film which won international appreciation. It would now be interesting to see how the audience takes to Tabu playing Irrfan's mother in Life Of Pi. »

Gerard Depardieu Will Go Cannibal For Life Of Pi

8 December 2010 3:33 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

The Life Of Pi adaptation is starting to pick-up momentum. Based off the bestselling novel written by Yann Martel, the screenplay was written by Finding Neverland scribe David Magee. Ang Lee is directing and now, newcomer Suraj Sharma finally has some talent to play off of. According to Variety, Gerard Depardieu will play a cannibalistic chef, while Adil Hussain and Irrfan Khan have also signed on as the main character's father and a grown-up version of the main character himself respectively. You may remember Khan recently boarded the Spider-man reboot. Not saying that's good or bad, just that it happened. The whole international feel makes sense given the film's source material. Life Of Pi swept almost the entire world by storm when it was released in 2001, becoming a bestseller in numerous countries. It centers around a boy stuck on a raft with a tiger. Gerard Depardieu to star in Life Of Pi

8 December 2010 2:44 PM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Last month, The Hollywood News reported that Brokeback Mountain director Ang Lee had announced shooting plans for Life Of Pi. After many years of script re-writes and financial stalling, the film is finally in production. Things have gotten even tastier with this project now that Gerard Depardieu has been added to the cast. Until now, only leading man and newcomer Surej Sharma had been confirmed. Depardieu is set to play the role of the chef, a reasonably macabre character who is essential to the plot. Sadly, to explain Depardieu’s character in synopsis would result in some serious spoiler action for those who haven’t read the book. Lets just say, if its done right, you’ll be so consumed by the story, Obelix won’t even spring to mind when Depardieu hulks onto the screen. Irrfan Khan (Slumdog Millionare) will be playing the protagonist Pi as an adult. Bollywood starlet Tabu (Chandni Bar, »

Life Of Pi finally gets its head above water-thanks to director Ang Lee

26 October 2010 8:35 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

At last, director Ang Lee has confirmed that the film adaptation for Life of Pi will go ahead having secured a budget and shooting plan from Fox. Lee has even found his leading man, casting Deli-born newcomer Suraj Sharma to play books protagonist, Pi Patel. Speculation around Ang Lee’s plans to direct the screen adaptation of Yann Martel’s bestselling novel have been rife since early 2009. The project was continually stifled by screenplay difficulties. Apparently, Martel’s zoological oddity had proved near impossible to decode into a story that is workable for the big screen.

This was not the first time the Life Of Pi has been at loggerheads with Hollywood. Director Alfonso Cuaron was set to direct the movie for a release date as far back as 2007 but later stepped down as the schedule conflicted with filming for Children Of Men. Cuaron was replaced by Jeann-Pierre Jeunet who »

25 October 2010 10:56 PM, PDT | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

When we last heard about director Ang Lee's Life Of Pi, Fox had put the film on hold because it was simply going to cost too much (reportedly in the $70 million range). But now, it appears that the film is back on track as Lee has worked out a new budget as well as cast his lead actor, newcomer Suraj Sharma. USA Today reports that while the film's final budget tally remains undisclosed, it is something north of $50 million which Fox has agreed to back. The film will be shot in 3D, »

Ang Lee's 3D vision of Life of Pi put on hold

Another director and yet another set back for The Life Of Pi. The adaptation of the Yann Martel bestseller has been in the works for eight years now but I was optimistic that the film would finally get made when earlier this year news broke that Ang Lee had signed to direct a 3D version of the film for Fox. But Lee can now join a group of filmmakers like M. Night Shyamalan and Alfonso Cuaron who were unable to get the film off the ground. As it turns out, Fox felt that Lee's vision for »

Ang Lee to make Life Of Pi...in 3D?

We’re used to reporting on 3D filmmaking in relation to the latest money-spinning genre sequel, so the announcement that Fox plan to roll out the technological big guns for a whimsical literary adaptation has caught us a bit by surprise. Fox have been sitting on the rights to Yann Martel’s Life Of Pi since 2000, with a host of big-name directors attached, all of whom have fallen by the wayside. Alfonso Cuaron, M. Night. Shyamalan and Jean-Pierre Jeunet have all come and gone, but it’s now sounding like the studio...

Books: Review: Book Review:Yann Martel: Beatrice And Virgil

14 April 2010 10:00 PM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

The allegory for human memory and the power of the written word wrapped inside Beatrice And Virgil is insufferable. That’s a shame, considering the potential of the story that Life Of Pi author Yann Martel intended to deliver it. This short but ephemera-stuffed novel about a successful yet misunderstood author reveals its agenda with a flourish that’s worthy of a villain in a Dan Brown novel, and about as believable. Stewing in self-pity after his agent and publisher reject his manuscript for a book about the Holocaust, Martel stand-in Henry returns to the happier tasks of acting in »
