Michael Apted Will Complete Shooting for Curtis Hanson on ‘Of Men and Mavericks’

23 November 2011 9:24 PM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

We’re hearing from Deadline that Coal Miner’s Daughter and Amazing Grace helmer Michael Apted will be taking over directing duties on Of Men and Mavericks (formerly Mavericks) from L.A. Confidential‘s Curtis Hanson, with only 15 days left in the production. Thankfully, this isn’t because the film is in trouble; unfortunately, it’s because Hanson had “health complications from a recent heart surgery.”

Anyone with a sense of perspective understands that a production being shut down doesn’t come close to equaling someone’s demise, but, nevertheless, it’s good to know that things are getting back into order. If there’s anything I can really hope at the moment — other than Hanson‘s good health, of course — it’s that Apted doesn’t do anything to make it stand out from the majority of the film, if only for the sake of a consistent vision.

Wrath of the Titans, the sequel to 2010's Clash of the Titans, won't be released until March of next year, but Warner Bros. is already set to make another sequel.

THR reports that Wrath screenwriters Dan Mazeau and David Leslie Johnson have been hired to write the story for the third installment, which would continue the adventures of Perseus (Sam Worthington). Wrath was the first collaboration for the two writers, who co-wrote the screenplay with Steven Knight (Amazing Grace).

While no particulars about the plot of Titans 3 were given, the report claims that Toby Kebbell, who plays Perseus's sidekick Agenor, may figure into the story. Wrath director Director Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles) is also expected to return.

Next Showing: Wrath of the Titans opens March 30, 2012

His casting was supposedly supposed to be a secret, but he let it slip a little early saying "I knew I was a big mouth, I didn’t know how much of a big mouth, and I’ve ruined everything. And now I might not have a job to go back to!”

'Eastern Promises' & 'Dirty Pretty Things' Writer Steven Knight Preps Directing Debut 'Hummingbird'

11 April 2011 1:05 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

It didn't take long for writer Steven Knight to make a big splash in Hollywood, penning scripts that wound up being directed by Stephen Frears ("Dirty Pretty Things"), Michael Apted ("Amazing Grace") and David Cronenberg ("Eastern Promises"). And from there, he quickly found himself writing some very buzzworth projects recently, including the next Dan Brown flick "The Lost Symbol," a Robert Kennedy biopic with Matt Damon attached, a remake of the classic "Le Cercle Rouge" and an "Eastern Promises" sequel (he's also scribed, less promisingly, the sequel to "Clash Of The Titans"). But rather than await around for any of… »

Ascension: A Tom Hooper Profile (Part 1)

1 February 2011 11:36 PM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Following his Academy Award nomination for Best Director on The King's Speech, Trevor Hogg profiles the career of British filmmaker Tom Hooper in the first of a two-part feature...

“I fell in love with directing at the age of twelve, at prep school in Highgate,” stated British filmmaker Tom Hooper who as a student came across the book How to Make Film and Television. His career ambitions were fueled further when an uncle gave the London native a cast-off clockwork 16mm Bolex camera which allowed him to make his debut effort, a short film called Runaway Dog. Later, during the year between Westminster and Oxford University, Hooper produced a fifteen minute project about a painting that terrorizes its creator (Philip Rosch). Costing $16,000, Painted Faces (1992) was broadcast on Channel 4’s First Frame and received extra financial support from commercial director Paul Weiland which allowed it to be screened at the 35th London Film Festival. »
