A Nutshell Review: The Tin Mine
DICK STEEL24 September 2006
Set in 1950s after WWII, The Tin Mine is set in Southern Thailand, and chronicles the lives of tin miners as seen through the eyes of Arjin Panjapan (Pijaya Vachajitpan), whose autobiographical short stories form the basis of this movie. It's no wonder, after watching this movie, that it's Thailand's official entry in the Best Foreign Language film category for this year's Academy Awards.

Our protagonist, Arjin Panjapan, dropped out of the university and found himself looking for a job, any job, for survival. Leaving Bangkok, he makes it down south and hooks up with a group of tin miners, and because of his attitude of willing to do just about anything, he's hired on the spot, and there on learns that life is much more than just a piece of paper telling you about your educational qualification, but it's the ups and downs that one experiences, which will shape your life forever.

What I particularly liked about this coming of age story, is actually how it's evenly mapped out into the 4 years of his life spent on the dredger and small mining town. From rookie to senior, the movie chronicles Arjin's life in short episodes, sometimes dwelling on certain memorable scenes, while others looked more into the characters he deals with everyday. In the tin mining town where everyone knows everyone else, and there are few gathering and entertainment spots, it's the characters that helped to bring out the flavours in the movie.

Watching how life, no matter how hard and difficult it is, unfold on the dredger, makes you wonder if your own work environment has it that difficult. But it's always the camaraderie and team spirit, that helps make any environment, worth working in. Working hard and playing as hard should be the mantra, as we see how this is practiced throughout the ranks, never mind if one is the CEO, or the lowly servant.

Infused with plenty of comedy and touching moments as well, the characters make this movie work. Like the scrooge like shopkeeper (Jumpol Thongtan), the cock-sure supervisor who speaks a smattering mix of Thai and Behasa Melayu John (Niran Sattar), and the burly yet child like assistant Kai (Sonthaya Chitmanee).

It's a pity that this movie only had a limited run in the theatres this year, and sadly I've actually missed it then. It's something worth watching in the cinemas, even though its narrative style sticks to the formula of coming of age films, this one had a certain heart and soul to it all. Watch it if you have any opportunity!

The Tin Mine - Thoughtful, coming of age story
evancyl28 December 2022
The movie is based on a series of short autobiographical stories and the title literally means "Tin Mine University". In the 1950s, Arjin drops out of the prestigious Chulalongkorn University and goes to Southern Thailand to work at a tin mine, where he learns many life lessons.

I like how the movie is split into four chapters, one for each year of university (freshman to senior), and delves into the lives of its characters while still following a narrative arc. The camaraderie among the workers and the kindness of the boss make for many heartwarming scenes, though the mine environment is of course very much a boys' club (alcohol and swearing abound).

The Tine Mine (a thai movie)

Warning: Spoilers
Thai Movie Well its about the boy - our main character, when he tossed out from the institution, his journey started,, His father says he is sending him to The Tin Mine,, where anyone would rarely want to start their new life/a part of their life I would say,, he leaves by knowing there is no hope for him in there, all his hopes are now centered by his new destination Tin Mine..

(One special thing to mention when he was talking to old guy he says, he came here to save some money so that when he gets out of this place he can marry his girlfriend that he had to leave behind, Old man says: Whether you go to China or somewhere in the world a girl waits for you only for three years, after that if she finds a new lover, the girl can't be blamed)

He stars to work there may be as a surveyor,, he slowly gets acquainted with everyone,, In this movie definitely the writings is very beautiful because when the main character describe about the rain sun working alcohol everything is so beautiful said and written For example: it says(as far as I remember): We don't stay looking at the sky but we look at the end date of the month also we look at the emptiness of the alcohol glass.

Here the Tin Mine boss drinks with everyone and whenever he see a child without a shirt, he gives them money to buy shirt and the whole village children come without shirt to get money - the boss also without hesitation distribute the money among everyone.

Actually in very rural place - rural or not people who work at very low level they have only alcohol for their entertainment to forget all days tiredness, sadness(like the Sylhet tea worker drink every night cheap alcohol)

One days the boy receives a letter from his girlfriend,, the letter was about wedding invitation He drank the whole night with the old man, and writes in the wall that past is a dream - present is starvation - future is death Old man rewrite the sentences like past is a dream - present is starvation - endure it

Ohh Tin Mine machine broke and the project is dropped, everybody goes to a new Mining project, here the boss says: Archin you have a long way to go and lots have to learn.

There is a shopkeeper says to, Archin everyone is leaving as the way they came, you too when you had come, you had to borrowed money now before you go clean all the borrowed.

Archin happily gives the shopkeeper all he had, earned at the end, he realised/maybe when he came here his motive to earn/save some money was gone now he has his life to start again.

I would like conclude by saying that movie isn't so special but it is beautifully finished and done and IMDb rating is great.

At the end of the movie you will know that the movie is based on a real ife experience written by our main character.

He actually lived that life and wrote all the experiences in a book, from the book today what we have is this movie.

Maybe In my life there is a huge possibility that I would not have read that written thai book but from the this movie I gets to gather others parts of the world experience little a bit.

Unforgettable and touching
meyiengi7 August 2019
My fav Thai film. And because I studied engineer same as the main actor, the scene of his dirty thrown workshop shirt on the ground was touching me. As I was still junior student, our engineering volunteer camp-seniors bought us the tickets to see this movie. In this camp we had some similar experiences, but not that tough. We worked hard like a construction site workers just for food. Got drunk and sang after long hard work day by day. Some days we worked until morning. This film always reminded me of this best time of my life. 😊 I met my first boyfriend there.
