Tribeca Film Review: ‘Psychopaths’

26 April 2017 7:34 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Devoid of characters or a story about which one might care, “Psychopaths” proves to be a fright-free pastiche without purpose — save, that is, for unimaginatively paying homage to a string of superior genre predecessors. As in his prior “Carnage Park,” writer-director Mickey Keating offers up a schizo nightmare that’s narratively splintered to pieces and rife with nods toward his favorite ’70s and ’80s horror movies. However, there’s so little substance or originality to this lurid, abstract affair that it comes off as simply a faded grindhouse collage. Even in the midnight-movie arena, its dull derivativeness will likely spell its doom.

An introductory video recording of death-row killer Starkweather (Larry Fessenden) ranting and raving about how his “children will inherit the Earth” sets the hysterical and nonsensical tone of “Psychopaths,” whose narrator (Jeff Daniel Phillips) informs us that Starkweather’s prophesy — namely, that his evil spirit will possess other »

Pick of the WeekThey’re Playing With Fire [Kl Studio Classics]

What is it? A sexy college professor seduces her student, and then people start dying horrible deaths.

Why see it? I’ve been a Sybil Danning fan for more years than I care to recall, but somehow this one slipped past me before now. I’m not sure what teen me would have thought, but as an adult I’m in awe of just how off the rails it gets from its very clear T&A origin. From the cover to the copy the film sells itself as just another sex flick, but »

Pick of the WeekThe Love Witch

What is it? A witch visits a small coastal community in search of love with a side of unintended consequences.

Why buy it? Writer/director/producer/composer/editor/production designer/art director/set decorator/costume designer Anna Biller delivers a singular experience with this incredibly stylish, sexy, and scathing tale of a witch in search of love. The film is a colorful, stylized nod to the days of Technicolor romance that manages to be both a take down of a patriarchal society and a loose, fun romp.

Drive-In Dust Offs: Halloween (1978)

4 March 2017 11:02 AM, PST | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

It starts with the music, which rises as the screen fades from black to reveal the sinister orange glow of the credits and a leering jack o’ lantern. The rapid, staccato piano notes indicating an oppressive force at work; relentless and unforgiving. John Carpenter’s Halloween (1978) is about all of these sensations and more; concrete vibrations that have echoed through the halls of horror, resounding from time to time to remind audiences of its lasting influence and potency.

By now, most know the story of how Halloween came to be and the landmark it truly is. How producer Irwin Yablans approached Carpenter about doing a horror film after seeing his Assault on Precinct 13 (1976), and wanted it to revolve around babysitters; how the film was initially panned by major critics, and then re-evaluated once it started to become popular; how it ended up making over $70 million worldwide at the box office against a $325,000 budget, »

First look at video nasty remake ‘Unhinged’

22 February 2017 7:18 AM, PST | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

Unhinged was one of many movies in the early 80s to find itself tangled up in the video nasties scandal here in the UK… However, unlike a lot of its “nasty” brethren, the film was less controversial, actualy playing more ike a traditional slasher movie than a gore-filled monstrosity. Which is why the film has since been re-released, without cuts; as most recently as 2014, when then-burgeoning UK distributor 88 Films put out the film on DVD.

Now I mention 88 Films as they, along with ITN Distribution have picked up a Remake, yes remake, of the former video nasty for a release on DVD and VOD this year. But wait, I hear you ask, who’s behind this remake? Well…

Proportion Productions, a new UK filmmaking shingle who have been churning out films such as Fox Trap, 12 Deaths of Christmas and The House on Elm Lake – all of which are due for »

Fear in the Found Footage: A look back at some classics

26 January 2017 3:33 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

The original Blair Witch Project arguably created the found footage genre when it was released back in 1999. Telling the tale of a bunch of students striding out into the Maryland woodlands, the film offered audiences a new way of experiencing terror from the point of view of those being subjected to it, and they lapped it up. Now, the franchise is back with a bang in, well, Blair Witch, a Force Awakens to the original’s still terrifying A New Hope. With Blair Witch arriving on Blu-ray and DVD from January 23rd, what better opportunity to look at some of the terrors of the found footage genre:

Cannibal Holocaust (1980)

Okay, I know we just said The Blair Witch Project created the genre, but only inasmuch as Halloween created the stalk’n’slash (when actually, Black Christmas pipped it to the post but didn’t take off in quite the same »

Blu-ray Review: David Cronenberg’s Dead Ringers Collector’s Edition

16 January 2017 1:24 PM, PST | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

When people accuse David Cronenberg’s work of being “cold” or “clinical,” I suspect the movie they’re really talking about is his 1988 psychological thriller, Dead Ringers. It is a movie about surgeons, so of course it’s clinical. It is photographed with special cameras and carefully choreographed movements that require precision. It is a film about two men who share an unspoken bond and who keep all of their emotions under wraps. Of course it feels cold. But it is also a movie in which a woman tears into the flesh connecting conjoined twins with her teeth. There’s no mistaking it for anything but a David Cronenberg movie.

Jeremy Irons plays Beverly and Elliot Mantle, twin gynecologists who run their own highly successful and experimental clinic. Despite their deep connection, the brothers are different: Elliot is suave and confident, while Beverly is shy and frightened. When they meet »
