It is a good film.
husnain_0518 December 2005
This movie was a fantastic comedy. It had a lot of comedians star in it like Akshay Kumar,Rajpal Yadav,Paresh Raval and John Abraham.

Rimi Sen was good at playing Akshay Kumars wife and so were all the air hostesses. Mr Hot as Mac (Akshay Kumar) and Mr cool as Sam (John Abraham) are two fashion photographers who like the same girl Maggie (Neha Dupia). When John Abraham cheats on his work he becomes Akshay Kumars senior and Akshay Kumar gets really jealous because his flat has to be given to John Abraham and Neha Dupia starts liking John more. Akshay Kumar wants to be better than John Abraham so he finds a flat and he is going out with three different girls (Nitu Chandra,Nargis Bagheri,Daisy Boppana).

Hiarious!
gossipgirl_always2 August 2007
These are one of the movies that don't require any brain or thinking, it's a very funny time pass which you forgot in the next hour or so. I was really surprised with John Abraham's acting he usually playing the gangster like character with the emotionless face,so from that to playing the complete opposite and does it successfully,by managing to shine amongst the comic geniuses such as Paresh Rawal and Akshaye Kumar. I was also quite surprised with the Akshaye's 3 girls because there roles don't require much talent but mostly moaning about Akshaye's dissapearence(to the other girls) i was surprised as they managed to establish and actual persona and you could differentiate between them which is a good thing ,also majority of songs are good,it is colourful and fun so on a boring Sunday evening this will sure lighten your mood.

Good film!!
Dream_Woman7 January 2008
Now i really liked this movie, it was so funny. Both Akshay Kumar and John Abraham are brilliant actors, i think after watching this film they should do lots more films together in the future.

Akshay Kumar gets himself into a bit of trouble by dating 3 women at the same time, but the way he handles in when one comes out of the door and then the other one was just so funny to watch, he acted really well int his film and i hope that he makes more great comedy's like this one in the future, John Abraham plays his best friend, he plays his role really well and he is so underrated i am glad that some of his amazing work has got noticed but he is a really Good actor. i just love John, Neha Dhupia has a small role in this film and plays it well.

The muse is really good i really recommend this movie to everyone.

A huge disappointment to what could have been a potential blockbuster
the29game6 November 2005
I had tremendous expectations from the movie, which was marketed really well and had all the ingredients of a potential blockbuster. The casting was done really well with all great comedians in Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav, and the really popular John Abraham. The cast was given a storyline that was really good (although a copy from Jerry Lewis' movie Boeing Boeing), and in the hands of a director that has proved class in comedies in his previous creations (such as Hera Pheri, Hungama, Hulchul).

I think the sold house in the first weekend of its release was truly disappointed with the movie. There were no original moments of laughter in the movie with most of the jokes pretty stale and tried out previously. The plot, although not original, was pretty new to the Indian cinema and was the only saving grace of the film. But that too seemed too hastily done. To me it just seemed a good story line taken to the drain with some bad direction.

All in all, it just seemed like the film makers wanted to get the movie over by Diwali and hurried up in the production. I really didn't believe I would be saying this but - I would not recommend watching it really, and would seriously wait for it to release on DVD to rent it out.

Good comedy
MovieInspector1 January 2011
This film is an example of how good Akshay Kumar is in comedies. He is great in his role; he deservedly won the filmfare award for best performance in a comic role for his performance. John Abraham does his part well alongside Akshay in the lead roles. Paresh Rawal did well in his supporting role. Manoj Joshi and Rimi Sen did their parts well as did Neha Dhupia. The story of this is one that promises the audience a lot of comedy scenes, and it doesn't fail to deliver them. The music isn't that good to be honest. Still, it is worth watching for the comedy.

Verdict: good comedy - definitely watch it. I give it 7.5/10

Its Garam...
rock83198326 August 2006
Well..after three hits(Hera Pheri,Hungama,Hulchul) Priyadarshan's latest movie starts with G not H..With a rain stuffed Bangalore we assumed to get tickets easily for Garam Masala..But the heck it was not like that.however we got the tickets and marched towards another comic journey..

Till now we have known the story so i will not discuss here.. Whether the movie is worth the wait? whether the movie leaves upto the expectations?..2005 will be remember as year of comedies

However the weakest point of the movie is its story line.It had one line story or no story at all. What makes Garam Masala garam is the treatment. Its Priyadarshan touch which makes u sit throughout the movie.

First half is just passable..nothing much. And when u think u are losing your bucks comes breezy second half which makes u laugh till u get pain. The confusion, the settings, the arrangements created hold on till the end

Music is another plus point of the movie. But what makes Gram Masala garam is the top class performances.

The three hot babes,Neha Dhupia and Rimi sen have nothing much to do. Rajpal Yadav is good.Paresh Rawal who is Priyans favourite again delivers a top performance. He is angry and frustrated cook still he is so cool.

John Abraham doing comedy for the first time does a great job.He matches akshay in every step. But in some scenes he tries too hard.Anyways a very good performance.

And u know what makes everyone so excited about Garam Masala was Akshay in Priyadarshan's movie after Hera Pheri which sparkled the way for akshay as one of the best comic timer. The movie rests on Akshay Kumar. Akshay steals the show from one and all.Garam Masala rocks cause Akshay rocks. From dialogue delivery to facial expressions he is just fantastic.Look at his facial expression in Chori Chori song.He have undoubtedly the best comic timing in bollywood.Akshay had came a long way from Tarazu and Dawa type movies.

Another hit for Priyadarshan..3/5

Garam Masala - A wonderful laugh riot !
gleejoseph10 February 2006
One of the more sensible comedies to hit the Hindi film screens. A remake of Priyadarshans 80s Malayalam hit Boeing Boeing, which in turn was a remake of the 60s Hollywoon hit of the same name, Garam Masala elevates the standard of comedies in Hindi Cinema.

Akshay Kumar has once again proved his is one of the best super stars of Hindi cinema who can do comedy. He has combined well with the new hunk John Abraham. However John still remains in Akshays shadows and fails to rise to the occasion.

The new gals are cute and do complete justice to their roles.

A must watch comedy. Leave your brains away and laugh for 2 hrs!!!! After all laughter is the best medicine ! Ask Priyadarshan and Akshay Kumar !!!!!

A weak start, but progresses a lot as time goes on...
Dingataca7 December 2007
Garam Masala is about Mac and Sam (Akshay Kumar and John Abraham) and their struggle of trying to date around 3 girls at the same time, with crazy, and very funny results.

The performances were decent enough. Akshay remains triumphant over John, and his role was larger and also more powerful, but John sticks it out and emerges with a decent performance, and stands out on his own. The girls are mediocre - nothing special. Paresh Rawal is the star of this movie, although having a supporting role, he provides much more comedy more than Akshay, John, and the girls put together. Well done to him. Rimii Sen makes a short and forgettable appearance. Ditto for Neha Dhupia. Rajpal Yadav is also memorable as Babban.

Worth a watch.

This movie is largely based on the 1965 Hollywood movie Boeing Boeing
anilsrivast17 March 2014
Garam Masala has largely followed the script of the comedy 'Boeing Boeing', starring Tony Curtis and Jerry Lewis, which was released in 1965. The comedy is slap-stick, but it is nowhere close to what Curtis and Lewis put up in the original Hollywood movie. There is one major departure, though. In Boeing Boeing Curtis's housekeeper is a long suffering old lady, whose sarcasm and chagrin is understated, whereas in Garam Masala the housekeeper is a loud, middle aged man, whose annoyance over the romantic affairs of Akshay Kumar, are overplayed. It appears that Paresh Rawal was trying to steal the limelight from the main characters. And, John Abraham cannot be compared to Jerry Lewis, who was in a class of his own. His facial antics could only be matched by Johnny Walker, the hilarious Indian comedian.

2 Grown Men Over Acting and Chasing Girls for no Apparent Reason
playa_pyt4 November 2005
The first half hour of the movie had a steady pace and introduced the characters. however all of a sudden everything was happening too quick, a lame reason for Akshey Kumar to date 3 girls, very loud over acting by both Akshey and John Abraham. Neha Dupia was the highlight of the movie, Paresh Rawal did well but not as good as his performance in Hera Pheri. overall this movie was the biggest disappointment the film does no justice to its trailer. save your money and don't watch this movie, watch Hera Pheri and Hungama again!

summarising it: a cheap stage show performance and appearance to the film no story or substance, the plot was extraordinarily non-sense good music by Preetam the man who bought us Dhoom! keep it up! movie shot all in one room, new comers (female cast) were okay as it was their first film but established actors like Akshey and John totally disappointed an established director like Priyadarshan gives his worst movie ever!

Fast, funny and fantastic
Li_8511 June 2006
Garam Masala is one of the funniest film I've seen in ages. Akshay Kumar is excellent as the womaniser who has affairs with 3 girls and engaged at the same time. John Abraham is Amusing at times and this is one of his best works so far. Paresh Rawail is superb as usual in most of his films. The director Priyadarshan has delivered great Movies in the past. Hera Pheri, Hungama and Hulchul being some of the Best. Garam Masala is his funniest film he has made. The three newcomer actresses are average. Rimi sen doesn't get much scope in this movie. I was impressed to see how Priyadarshan made a movie with a simple storyline of a guy having a affair with 3 girls at the same time. All 3 girls have a day off in the same day and end up in the same house. Packed with loads of Laughs, this is one Non stop Entertainer.

This is why some people hate Bollywood
claudecat25 September 2008
I never understood why some people dislike Bollywood films: they've got charismatic actors, great dance numbers, and heightened emotion--what's not to like? What I didn't realize was that I had only seen the upper-crust of Bollywood. Then I watched "Garam Masala". I could tell from the first scene that this was not a movie I was going to like (the film opens with a montage of the two leads driving around a city and apparently happening serendipitously on a series of photo setups populated with gyrating models), but I kept hoping things would improve. Sadly, they didn't. The main problem is that the two protagonists, Mac & Sam, are completely unsympathetic. They spend the entire movie lying to women--and lying brutally- -in order to get them into bed, and the audience is supposed to find this funny, and be charmed. The boys are unscrupulous and inept, and not in a lovable way. Mac even goes so far as to have one of the women drugged in order to keep her from discovering his cheating. The script is extremely poor, with repetitive scenes, setups that never lead to anything, and illogical actions and statements by the characters. In fact, the characters are never really developed at all. The males are boorish, greedy jerks, and the women merely interchangeably beautiful. If you go by this movie, you would think that "air hostesses" are pretty easy to pass from man to man. In reality, betrayal is not so humorous.

The only bright spots I found in the movie were one dance number that had brilliant sets, and a few slapsticky moments involving the French-farce, door-slamming aspects of the story. But Bollywood dancing is better enjoyed in movies choreographed by Farah Khan, and for slapstick you might as well just go straight to the silent comedies of Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd, who seem to have influenced writer/director Priyadarshan not a little. Priyadarshan also takes false credit for inventing the story: the basic premise of the plot is stolen from the 1960 play "Boeing Boeing." The original author of that work, Marc Camoletti, is credited nowhere. At least Priyadarshan changed the title for this remake, rather than brazenly using the original without giving credit, as he did in his 1985 version of this same tale. (According to IMDb's credits list.)

Youth Feast
praveenravi-511936 August 2020
Akshay Kumar and John Abraham makes a good combo in this movie to give lot of fun and entertainment. Akshay Kumar who is already engaged and does not care about his fiancee, makes an incredible set up ,making 3 airhostess to meet him frequently in an apartment and sees to that they dont see each other. John abraham who returns from America comes to know about akshay and joins with him and helps him to maintain the set up.

Illogical, no script but hilarious and also the start of Akshay's one man comic show acts
silvan-desouza28 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Priyadarshan's name was synomonous with dramatic films like Gardish, Virasat and then he turned a new leaf with Hera Pheri and kept doing comedies, most remakes of his Malyalam hits. This film is a remake of an English comedy Boeing Boeing Akshay was mostly criticised as an actor in 90s and he was pathetic in comedy in Mr & Mrs Khiladi and some more films, In Hera Pheri he was quite good but with Khakee suddenly his comic bone started getting noticed, after that Mujhse Shaadi Karoge where he stole the show, Garam Masala was his first solo comedy role though he shared screen space with John too. The film however has no main plot, no logic, no sense yet it's hilarious in many places, though at times it resorts to complete nonsense just to bring laughs like Akshay-John rivalry which suddenly is forgotten in second half. The film starts off on an ordinary note but some scenes are funny like John's promotion, Akshay and John's scene in the hotel and later on some scenes in the house though one does question, How come all the girls cant even hear sounds? But that is like asking too much from such a film.

There are some scenes which are really funny like how Akshay hides from all three girlfriends and till the end it keeps you laughing though it does drag at places, there is no proper continuity too some things happen too sudden too and look contrived, The preclimax is hilarious but the ending is abrupt.

Direction by Priyadarshan is not at his best but good in several portions

Music by Pritam is good but the songs many times do seem forced, Dil Samdundar is good but wrongly placed, while Kiss Me Baby is good, it was added in between later after the success of the film, Falak Dekhun is a superb romantic number by Sonu Nigam, Ada is good

Akshay Kumar's deadpan humour, his expressions, his dialogue delivery are simply spot on, he carries off most ridiculous situations with flair, However at times for some reason he laughs out loud but yet this is one of his best perf John Abraham tries hard to fit in the comic set up, this was his first comic role but he doesn't seem fit, he struggles a lot in his delivery Paresh Rawal is really superb with his deadpan act, sadly later in his career he became loud and theatrical and repetitive, but here he is simply amazing. Rajpal Yadav is not given too much importance, he is funny at times Manoj Joshi is good, Asrani is okay Amongst girls, Daisy, Neetu Chandra and Nargis are okay for their debuts, Only Neetu was seen or heard later rest vanished Neetu too could hardly make a mark Rimii Sen has a small role she is as usual

movie is amazing must watch
prdindian16 December 2005
on the contrary to the person listed above me i felt that this movie was really funny particularly in the scenes were there is a lot of mix up. i don't want to give the plot and the storyline away to the people that haven't watched it yet but i will say that Paresh Rawal does not have an extensive role such as past Priyadarshan movies, for example, Hera Pheri and Hungama. Paresh Rawal does an amazing part in the little role given to him, John Abraham does equally well, Akshay Kumar has proved that he is no less in this movie like he had from Waqt and almost all his movies after Andaaz. Even though all three heroins in this movie were at a debut they did a pretty good job of acting particularly Nargis who is very good looking and hot. i would say that if you liked Hungama or Hera Pheri this movie is a must watch.

Garam masala movie is a amazing comedy movie.

The movie revolves around 2 friends who proposes air hostesses and brings them into their house and the fun begins when all of them come in the same house.

The performance of all actors are really great especially Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal's role.

The songs are great especially kiss me baby song.

The plot is good and everything is good in this movie.

This is one of best comedy movie after hera pheri and andaz apna apna.

This movie is worth watching and I highly recommend them who love watching comedy movies and especially Akshay Kumar fans and you will never get bored everytime you watch.

Plot less, silly humor
jimmyair4 November 2005
Probably the worst Bollywood film I've seen.

No plot line. Very little character developments.

Full of silly and pointless humor. The whole film was chaotic and direction-less. There was no proper ending to the story. The airport was filmed in a shopping mall.

Same story chewed over and over again until you want to say "please, just move on with it!!" Even the song and dance was pointless and badly choreographed.

The only good thing about this movie is that there were hot bods all around... but then most of the Bollywood movies have that anyways these days.

Btw I'm not from an Indian background

If you like Pakistani Stage Comedies (Bakra Kisto pe) this is for you!
EyeAmDeeBee4 November 2005
Just came back after watching it at Naz8 in Fremont. For those who want my opinion straight away, without having to read the complete review, here's the gist:

Watch it if you have:

-Nothing better to do.

-Free passes.

-Respect for Priyadarshan's earlier movies.

-Appreciation for Pakistani stage dramas (sans Bakra Kiston pe etc.)

-Not been keeping up with clichéd jokes.

-Huge crush on Jon Abraham, who delivers dialogues as if he is trying to recall forgotten lines.

-Curiosity to see Akshay and Paresh's excellent comic timing being wasted in poorly written dialogues (again, not an excuse for Jon)

-Desire to see TV standard actresses getting more screen time than so called established item actresses.

I gave it a 5 out of 10 because sadly, it is still better than the other junk being churned out of bollywood factories. I rate movies higher when I find them enjoyable in a repeated watch. This one is sadly miles away from that.

Don't bother
vermaao20 November 2005
The Priyadarshan/Paresh Rawal combo has been golden before with the likes of HERA PHERI and HUNGAMA so I went into the movie (at an Indian multiplex) with high hopes, especially after the slick promos. Unfortunately, like HULCHUL before it, this movie was a huge disappointment.

Like others have commented, the premise of the movie, which was already stale to begin with, just gets stretched on and on without any development or additional layering. After a while, you just want the movie to end so you can go home (if I had been watching this at home, it would have been much easier to cut my losses). Akshay Kumar's performance is average at best and John Abraham should not try doing comedy again. The comedy aspects of the movie overall were pretty week. I only remember giggling like twice the entire movie. Definitely no sidesplitting belly laughs that consumed me in HERA PHERI or even to a lesser extent in AWARA PAAGAL DEEWANA. Paresh Rawal had a few of his expected classic moments, but overall, because his role and character wasn't given much room to grow, he didn't make much of an impact in this film.

Neha Dhupia, who makes only an appearance in the movie, was fun to look at while she was on screen. And some of the songs are fun. Especially the opening and closing songs of ADA and KISS ME BABY, respectively. Otherwise, you're better off just passing on this movie.

best movie ever!!!
khiladi20995 January 2006
this move was friggin hilarious!!! funniest I've seen in a while, akshay and john kick ass as always, and the chicks are hot too. the story is awesome, lots of great jokes, and whoever reviewed this before me is an idiot. to him i say that u are not of Indian background so u wouldn't understand the humor u moron. don't rate movies u don't understand. what did u watch, the subtitle version where majority of jokes are lost in translation? thats what i thought jackass.

akshay kumar is the best actor ever and proves once again his versatility, he can do not only action but comedy as well, and is excellent at it. john has proved himself as well, this is his first comedy role and he was also excellent at it.
