This film holds the record for the worst domestic opening weekend of any film opening in more than 3,000 theaters. In its opening weekend, it grossed just $3,368,197 at 3,018 theaters, for a per screen average of $1,116 per theater. The final gross was $8,117,637, just over half of the $15,000,000 production budget.
At the end of the film, Jimmy Buffett wears a Gonzo Fist T-shirt in tribute to his friend, Hunter S. Thompson, who passed away in early 2005, a year prior to the release of the film. Buffett spent time with Thompson in the Florida Keys where Thompson wrote The Great Shark Hunt.
