Storyline

When Henry DeTamble meets Clare Abshire in a Chicago library they both understand that he is a time traveler, but she knows much more about him as he has not yet been to the times and places where they have already met. He falls in love with her, as she has already with him, but his continuing unavoidable absences while time traveling - and then returning with increasing knowledge of their future - makes things ever more difficult for Clare. Trivia

After filming was done, Eric Bana started filming Star Trek (2009), a role which required him to shave his head. However re-shoots for The Time Traveler's Wife (2009) were needed, but production was put on hold so Eric's hair could grow out. It took so long that the movie's release date was pushed back by nearly a year. See more »

I wanted to like it but ...
22 April 2010 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

Reading other reviews, I was surprised how many fans of the book enjoyed this movie. I've read the book more times than I can count, I listen to the audio book when I go for a run etc etc and I adore it. I've always accepted that film adaptations will never include all the characters, clever anecdotes or subtle nuances of novels. Watching the film for the first time, in the cinema, I admit that I was comparing the film with the book and obviously left extremely disappointed. I felt that Rachel McAdams was almost perfect as Clare. Eric Bana, on the other hand, was direly miscast and a combination of his hideous acting and the revolting, unfaithful script managed to destroy the character of Henry. I was disappointed that many of the scenes integral to defining their relationship in the book were completely left out, making it a fairly bland love story (but, I suppose, the producers wanted to make it suitable for a wider audience).

I gave it a while and re-watched it, ignoring the book as much as possible in my second consideration. I came to realise that I could watch the film as many times as I liked and I'd still despise it. I didn't just hate it because it's not even vaguely faithful to the film; I hate it because it's awful. As I've mentioned, I found the script nauseating and Bana's acting to be dull but there are far deeper flaws besides. The film, forced to summarise and dilute, fails to show the beauty and depth of their love. In the book Clare never WANTED a choice but in the film she'never HAD a choice'. Watching the film we see the tragic effects of their relationship but we never really see why they are together (beyond fate). Doesn't make for a very good love story.

If you haven't already watched it, I frankly wouldn't bother. As a book-lover, I found the script both offensively bad and nauseatingly slushy. As a film-lover, I found the story did not fit into the length of the film very well and it might be a tad confusing to some and just annoyingly choppy to others.
