Twilight's Taylor Lautner to play action figure Max Steel in film adaptation

7 December 2009 7:43 AM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Following its successes with Hasbro's Transformers and G.I. Joe toy lines, Paramount is now planning to put Mattel's Max Steel on the big screen.

And it's now been confirmed that Taylor Lautner, who plays native American wolfboy Jacob Black in Twilight and sequel New Moon, has signed to star in the role.

The screenplay, to be penned by Chad Damiani and Jp Lavin, will tell of a 19-year-old extreme sports junkie Josh McGrath. He's an orphan who is recruited by a secret agency after an accident infects his body with microscopic machines called nanoprobes, giving him the powers of superstrength, invisibility and altering his appearance.

The Max Steel action figure - along with a tie-in comic book - was introduced in the USA in 1999 and led to an animated series from 2000-2002 as well as a video game (pictured above).

Exclusive: Oscar producer Adam Shankman talks about hosts Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin

3 November 2009 6:39 PM, PST | EW - Inside Movies | See recent EW.com - Inside Movies news »

Director/choreographer Adam Shankman has only been the co-producer of the Oscars for three weeks. But Shankman and his co-producer Bill Mechanic, former head of Twentieth Century Fox, have managed to lock down the biggest part of the job, the host. We talked to Shankman about wrangling veteran Oscar emcee Steve Martin and Academy newcomer Alec Baldwin. EW: You must be thrilled and relieved to have this part of the job figured out? Shankman: You have no idea. That’s always the big opening stress. I love that I’m going to be working so closely with two people that »

Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin Team-Up to Host the 82nd Academy Awards

3 November 2009 4:35 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Apparently it takes two hosts to rival Hugh Jackman’s performance from last year’s Oscar ceremony.  Jackman said he wasn’t interested in hosting two years straight and the “Tropic Thunder” duo of Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr. also turned down the offer, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin have stepped up and will attempt to make the four-hour ceremony bearable for those watching at home.

While last year’s Oscars were surprisingly good under Bill Condon’s (”Dreamgirls”) direction, I have far less faith in Adam Shankman (”Bedtime Stories”) to come anywhere close to the bar Condon set.  I think given the right material, Baldwin and Martin have the comic talent to help usher along the night.  However, Baldwin’s unrivaled work on “30 Rock” is half-due to the show’s amazing writing staff and as for Martin, well…he not only starred in the “Pink Panther” remakes, he wrote them. »

So you think you can produce a classy Oscars?

20 October 2009 6:18 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Let's make one thing perfectly clear regarding today's announcement that Bill Mechanic and Adam Shankman are on board as producers of the 82nd Academy Awards; they were not AMPAS' first choice.  In fact, they weren't even the second or third.  It's true that the Academy asked last year's successful duo Larry Mark and Bill Condon to return, but neither wanted to commit with upcoming projects keeping them preoccupied.  But if anyone thinks Shankman, who resume includes such uninspired dreck as "Bringing Down The House" and "Cheaper by the Dozen 2," was the next phone call the Academy made is living »

'Hairspray' Director Set For '80s Rock Musical 'Rock of Ages'

20 October 2009 9:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Choreographer-turned-filmmaker Adam Shankman has fortunately found another musical to direct following his success with the "Hairspray" remake. Variety reports that he's set to helm the movie version of Broadway's "Rock of Ages," which incorporates popular '80s rock anthems, such as Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" and Twisted Sister's "We're Not Gonna take It," into a Sunset Strip-set love story about an aspiring musician and a girl who's just off the bus.

Shankman, who also made the hilarious online short "Prop 8: The Musical" and will be doing a "Hairspray" sequel, feels he knows the material well enough from having worked on an Extreme video back in the early '90s and from growing up with a dad in the music biz. He also was a choreographer on "Boogie Nights," which means he probably has experience setting a scene to Night Ranger's "Sister Christian," one of the songs appropriated »

It's official. Here's the press release as posted by Ain't It Cool News:

Taylor Lautner To Reprise His Role As Jacob In New Moon

Los Angeles, CA January 7, 2009 – Summit Entertainment and director Chris Weitz are pleased to confirm that Taylor Lautner will reprise his role as Jacob Black in the Twilight franchise’s next film installment New Moon.

“I'm very happy that Taylor will be playing Jacob Black in New Moon and that he's doing so with the enthusiastic support of Summit, the producers and Stephenie Meyer,” said Weitz. “The characters in Stephenie's books go through extraordinary changes of circumstance and also appearance; so it is not surprising that there has been speculation about whether the same actor would portray a character who changes in so many surprising ways throughout the series. But it was my first instinct that Taylor was, is, and should be Jacob, and that the books »
