Carlos:[at Tio Tomas' funeral] Tomas Alvarez was born in Jalisco, Mexico in 1921. The 13th kid out of 22. When he was born, he was so small, the midwife said he wasn't worth washing. But he ended up outliving all of them. In his life, he was an office boy, a barber and a farm worker. Then in America, he sold champurrado. Everybody knew him. If you walk down the street, he would stop every two minutes to talk to someone. They were always happy to see him.
Carlos:He had a love inside him that was so strong. It came from his heart and out through his eyes like a golden light. Everybody could see it, because he loved everyone and judged no one. At the end of my life, I will count it as my greatest privilege that I knew a saint. Because Tomas Alvarez was a saint. And he will not leave us. His spirit is still strong. He will be with us 'til the end of our days.

I enjoyed the movie but...... since when can a women get pregnant when the sperm is emited on her leg? I am a nurse and this is not possible. Sperm do not climb into the vagina. And why would a conservative minister father suddenly be so forgiving and feel guilty when he discovers that the 14 year old daughters sexual activity involved nudity and intimacy but just not full penetration. True to character he would still be very upset with her.

Realistic and refreshing, 12 July 2006
Author: ramona_bourhis from Rennes, France

No one is perfect and this film may have its flaws but what a realistic and refreshing look at LA! The young actors do a great job, portraying their characters genuinely -- no trickery, no exaggeration. The film-makers successfully depict the Echo Park area, with its people and its traditions as well as the new challenges facing the populations of Metropolitan LA. It is indeed good to see Los Angeles in a new light, with its culturally rich neighborhoods that tend to be either forgotten or ill-represented by mainstream Hollywood films. My personal pleasure: finally a film with actors that look like and speak like the characters they embody! The Spanish spoken is correct and accents are credible! Definitely recommend it.
